My father and I moved here almost 4 years ago now. My dad wanted to retire at the beach and I wanted a change of scenery. Coming from Arizona the humidity was the big difference. However the temp norms are basically the same other than that. We both lived in Calif before and didn't want anything to do with that overpriced, left living. Were more conservative. Anyway....we love it here! Love the South and the people. Love the warm ocean water. Love the trees.
Actually, South Carolina is replacing Florida as a fast growing state for retirees. It seems it has become too expensive to retire in Florida so people are setting up retirement in South Carolina.
When we moved here we were immediately impressed with the Southern hospitality. :) We have seen an alligator lying on a boulder by the river at the Congaree River Walk. Years ago we had a tornado that downed huge trees in our neighborhood only. I doubt it was even on the news.
Property tax on average is about .6% of assessed value in SC. Each county and district is slightly different. Vehicle taxes is covered at the end of this video, ruclips.net/video/4QtdheiGrMA/видео.html Hope this helps!

SC native, been in the western side of the state for over 50 years. Any body of water that has any sort of feed from a larger body of water has the potential of having gators. We've had them all over our county.
My husband and I have already started very seriously to take steps towards moving to South Carolina (we ourselves are Lithuanians, but we currently live in Belgium), but after reading the comments here about many alligators in some rivers and tornadoes, even my stomach felt sick. How are you not afraid of that?
Pretty much everywhere in the United States has some sort of natural disasters that they are prone to. Ultimately you’re just picking which one you will tolerate. I prefer getting warnings for hurricanes, versus the devastating earthquakes with no warning, we had on the West Coast. Alligators are more prominent at the coast, it’s not something I think about inland.
Unlike crocodiles, alligators aren't mean. They won't attack if you leave them alone. Just keep small pets away from water. An alligator will eat your dog. If you see a gator you don't need to run away. Just don't pet them!
@petersplat6164 0 seconds ago I moved to Clemson from Atlanta with the expectation that the lifestyle would be slower and quieter. It is slower, and I like that, but the noise is is about to drive me out of here. It seems, despite laws against it, people like to drive around with no muffler. Who are they trying to impress? I live a mile from a major road, and it's like a 24 hour tractor pull is next door. I gotta get out of this fuckin place. Atlanta Ga was much quieter, believe it or not. Greater Atlanta has emission inspections and a class of residents who had better things to do.
Life time south carolinian here and I total agree with you, half the population does not know what a dang muffler is. Honestly, I don’t understand why there isn’t a law against this. It’s nerve racking especially for an older person like me, but in fairness I’ve never liked the excessive noise. BTW, we’re in Central,Sc. And the trains come through on a regular basis 😖
This is what I found; www.dirtlegal.com/street-legal-utv-guide/south-carolina# There is a private pay to enter trail I’ve seen in the south part of our county, but it’s not very common around us. If you search online, you’ll find some in the more rural counties, especially in the upstate.
Should’ve moved to Charleston. Moved here also in 2015…everything has changed, some for the worse, some for the better. Bought a house just in time in 2018 for $316k, it’s now worth $550k. No way I’m selling. Love it here. Many of the things you discuss are absolutely true, but the bottom line is really can you adapt?
Charleston is way to congested and way too much traffic for us. I spend a lot of time down there with work and the traffic reminds me of Cali, at times. We made about 30K in equity in our first house and have about 150K in the house we live in now, so we have faired pretty well here too.

We walk in the road. Life is not so busy! In the west I have had many times where the sidewalk rises up and grabs you and you fall on your face. I did this in my own yard.
Unfortunately the state, statistically, has some of the poorest ranked drivers and Columbia is one of the worst. I’m talking statistics, not my opinion. It may not be as busy, but still very dangerous to walk in streets here. And I love the idea that the sidewalks raise up and cause people to fall. Have you not seen the road conditions?
I never said they weren’t in the Midlands, I said they weren’t in Lake Murray and not common, you have to head towards the coastal Plains. I mentioned that you can easily find them down at the Congaree State Park. As well, I’ve been to the Cayce Riverwalk more times than I can count and I’ve never seen a gator
@brandongaronteam where is congrlarew state park? Also, they are down there on the river walk. A buddy of mine patrols the river walk. His coworkers have seen them.
Deer are a problem all over the East. Here in the Northeast, they cause numerous accidents everywhere. In New York State, there are deer all the way down to wooded areas in the Bronx. The most dangerous times to be on the road is at dawn and dusk.
It is possible! I do always say, keep in mind there are not a ton of neighborhoods that connect to shopping and dinning via 35 mph streets. There are some, but not many in the midlands.
Deer in Central NYS where I'm from are plentyful! Even close to downtown you can see them, often walking down the sidewalk, just like a dog. But they tend to jump out in front of cars a lot more often. 😂
Appraiser said the market is hot depending on how far you’re willing to travel. He said there’s not as many people in the business because most of them are aging out. So if you are willing to travel often, you’ll have no trouble finding work. Hope that helps!

It's not something you brought up, but the mental health care here is atrocious. Maybe it's better off near a big city, but I was on a waiting list to see a psychiatrist for about 9 months. I still haven't been able to get in to see a therapist, and that sucks even more because it's pretty common for people to have to switch therapists a few times to find someone they click with.
I worked in EMS for many years, this is a commonality across the country. They defunded the state mental health hospitals in the 1960s and it hasn’t been the same since.
SC is known for low property taxes, which is great, but to some extent, you get what you pay for. So what is under funded? Schools? Community amenities?
Schools get taxed in numerous areas, so they seem to receive descent funding. The county roads could be better. As well, IMO, it is less of the "beautification" stuff vs what I saw in Cali. Most main roads don't have gutters, just drainage off the side, no tree lined medians, the street lights are on cords, not fancy poles. Those kinda things.

On your Mexican food comparison, here in SC we generally see Tex-Mex foods. While you are apparently used to a Cali-Mex cuisine. Brothers and Beer, a local restaurant is a pretty decent Cali-Mex joint. I spent a year in California and then years in Texas. Personally I love Tex-Mex foods and can tell you that Taco Bell is their own thing and is definitely not Tex-Mex. Cali-Mex foods was good but I was rarely able to get refried beans, only black or some weird looking white beans. Never had enough cheese in the dishes and always took much veggies. I prefer more meat and cheese (Tex-Mex). Finally chili should be hot, not that mild bland crap Cali-Mex tries to pass off as chili. My understanding is that Cali-Mex is supposed to be a healthy Mexican food. I can see that, but if I am paying for it, I want my Mexican food to be tasty. I will eat healthy at home.
Been to Brothers and Beer, not impressed. Real Mexico is the closest. California is definitely not healthy Mexican, of course there’s some new trendy “fresh” style Mexican that are gaining popularity, but not at all authentic Mexican we are use to. Refried beans was most common. Real authentic has hardly any cheese, tamales and corn tacos with meat onions and cilantro in corn tortillas, street tacos style. Ground beef was never an option, while its almost standard here.
Hitting a deer is not an issue just in SC. We hit a deer doing 65 in Nebraska! Thank God the pickup had a snow plow mount! No damage to pickup. Wife woked in vehicle insurance claims for a couple years. Daily had numerous claims for hitting a deer, from all over America.
My area had a TON of deer in the 1990's. They got into office parks and even on the Interstate. Driving at night you'd look for the glowing green eyes! Hunting rules were relaxed and the deer are now in the woods where they belong. A few but not so bad.
@bunnymonette My decision to leave florida was the safety and financial reasons. Every other day, there was a shooting.
Glad to hear you've had a good experience!

SC native, been in the western side of the state for over 50 years. Any body of water that has any sort of feed from a larger body of water has the potential of having gators. We've had them all over our county.
Potential, absolutely. But in 9 years I have never seen one in Lake Murray, but one trip to Hilton Head and you can't miss them.
no license required to carry either way here in sc btw
Yes, I did mention this in another video about the recent change in laws.
Why are we not afraid? Two reasons... We're Americans and we're SOUTHERNERS.
Unlike crocodiles, alligators aren't mean. They won't attack if you leave them alone. Just keep small pets away from water. An alligator will eat your dog.
If you see a gator you don't need to run away. Just don't pet them!

I moved to Clemson from Atlanta with the expectation that the lifestyle would be slower and quieter.

College towns are likely to have more teens. Teens are stupid.
That's a problem in the north too. We have emissions testing, but that doesn't help.

There is a private pay to enter trail I’ve seen in the south part of our county, but it’s not very common around us.

There are gators in the midlands. Go check out the cayce river walk.

Deer are a problem all over the East. Here in the Northeast, they cause numerous accidents everywhere. In New York State, there are deer all the way down to wooded areas in the Bronx. The most dangerous times to be on the road is at dawn and dusk.
Interesting about driving golf carts on city streets. I could save a fortune as a retiree.
It is possible! I do always say, keep in mind there are not a ton of neighborhoods that connect to shopping and dinning via 35 mph streets. There are some, but not many in the midlands.
I was once in a tornado in Lexington, SC. There were 52 tornados in the state that day.
Deer in Central NYS where I'm from are plentyful! Even close to downtown you can see them, often walking down the sidewalk, just like a dog. But they tend to jump out in front of cars a lot more often. 😂

No all are built on slabs.
Only inexpensive homes are on slabs. Decent homes are on a raised foundation.

As a person getting close to retirement that means little to me but it would be important to a young Family.
Yeah the whole “low taxes” thing is changing…….

I understand deer are in a lot of states, but those coming from concrete jungles aren't used to it.
My area had a TON of deer in the 1990's. They got into office parks and even on the Interstate. Driving at night you'd look for the glowing green eyes!
Hunting rules were relaxed and the deer are now in the woods where they belong. A few but not so bad.
I left florida 2010 and came to South Carolina. The difference is like night and day.

@bunnymonette My decision to leave florida was the safety and financial reasons. Every other day, there was a shooting. The last one less than a mile from where I lived was a 5 year old baby getting killed. St. Petersburg was getting wilder by the day. I'd go to work 12 hour shifts, and prostitutes would be out walking the streets and doing the same thing when I came home. We don't have that here in Marion County, South Carolina.
