This song is dedicated to soldiers dying in the war against fascism. Diana performed it in honor of the Victory Day in the war of 1941-1945, in which 27 million Soviet people died.

The Dagestani poet Rasul Gamzatov, when visiting Hiroshima, was impressed by the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and its monument to Sadako Sasaki,[2][citation needed] a girl who contracted leukemia as a result of the radioactive contamination of the city. Following Japanese traditions, she constructed one thousand paper cranes, hoping (in vain) that this might save her life. The memory of paper cranes folded by this girl-a girl who to this day serves as one symbol of the innocent victims of war-haunted Gamzatov for months and inspired him to write a poem starting with the now famous lines:
"I sometimes feel that the soldiers
Who have not returned from the bloody fields
Never lied down to earth
But turned into white cranes..."
This is the beautiful story but you are wrong. Rasul Gamzatov wrote this poem not about Hiroshima tragedy but about the mother from Dagestan village, (Caucasus Mountains, Russia) which lost all her sons in the time of Great Patriotic War. And there is the monument honoured this family, this Mother and her Sons.

This has to to be my favourite recording of Diana's. When i first did this on my channel i was totally blown away at the control and emotion she conveys here. It is just incredibly haunting and dark. Her unqiue vocal tone just creates the perfect atmosphere and ambience for what this song 'Cranes' is all about. If you havent, i recommend you look up 'Zhuravli' on wikipedia. Great reaction dude

The name of this song is "Crane". In Russian folk lore the Crane is revered and is considered
the "spirit" of all the soldiers lost in war. When anyone sings, there are sound waves you can not
hear. This is called the "timbre" of the voice. In Diana's case, she has many more unheard sound
waves than anyone I have ever heard and they make her voice "heavy". When she sings, she reaches into your soul because of this unique feature. You are correct that music does not need
words to convey the meaning but, one must be ultra sensitive to discern this.
