  • A powerful hymn of praise, written as a paraphrase of Psalm 103 by the same man who wrote Abide With Me. What a great hymn!

    1. Praise, my soul, the King of Heaven;
    To His feet thy tribute bring.
    Ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven,
    Evermore His praises sing:
    Praise Him, praise Him! (x2)
    Praise the everlasting King.
    2. Praise Him for His grace and favor
    To our fathers in distress.
    Praise Him still the same as ever,
    Slow to chide, and swift to bless.
    Praise Him, praise Him! (x2)
    Glorious in His faithfulness.
    3. Fatherlike He tends and spares us;
    Well our feeble frame He knows.
    In His hands He gently bears us,
    Rescues us from all our foes.
    Praise Him, praise Him! (x2)
    Widely yet His mercy flows.
    4. Frail as summer’s flower we flourish,
    Blows the wind and it is gone;
    But while mortals rise and perish
    Our God lives unchanging on,
    Praise Him, praise Him! (x2)
    Praise the high eternal One!
    5. Angels, help us to adore Him;
    Ye behold Him face to face;
    Sun and moon, bow down before Him,
    Dwellers all in time and space.
    Praise Him, praise Him! (x2)
    Praise with us the God of grace.

    This is one of my favourite hymns because it beautifully guides me back to God's Name and character, and his response to our vulnerability, when I'm tempted to think he actually might whack me, or when I forget that it's OK to be a finite human creature and not God.
    I grew up in the 90s (and early 2000s) in " Shout to the Lord" world too. Coming up on 9 years in a traditional Anglican church. I think bringing hymns to more people is great!

    This was another of my father's favourite hymns. I grew up going to a tiny church of England in South Africa. My father and 3 other men took care of the vongregation while we looked for a minister. I'm in my 60's now and grew up singing all these beautiful old hymns. While the modern hymns and choruses are lovely, there is something powerful in the old ones. I miss singing them. They feed my soul like none of the modern ones do. So yes, i know this lovely hymn.

    I am loving hearing these old friends and the research you do to bring out the stories behind them. I grew up in the Anglican church in the USA; my father was an Episcopal priest, and my husband and I brought our family up in congregations that used the 1928 Prayer Book and the 1940 hymnal. I would love it if you did "Come Down O Love Divine," one of the R. Vaughn Williams hymns to the tune Down Ampney.

    I am 76 years of age and in Australia. I love this hymn which sadly is not sung in Church today . It was in our Baptist Hymnal . I do love the period of time when Scripture in song was very popular. Loved SHOUT TO THE LORD “ . Your ministry is so powerful bringing back these old hymns and the stories of why they were written. The words of these old “ forgotten”. hymns often come into my mind and strengthen me. God bless your gift of music as you use it for his glory.
    I have just finished listening and was amazed that this very morning I had read Psalm 103 and thought how very meaningful those words were. ❤

    I remember singing this hymn at junior church, many years ago. It didn't really mean much to me at that time. Like you I have sung mostly modern choruses with the some hymns. Now, just before my sixtieth birthday, I relish the treasure the depth of words found in hymns. Thank you for your ministry, Luke. God bless and keep you and your loved ones always.

    I remember singing this song repeatedly at my secondary school during our morning assemblies, and while my friends and I loved singing it, the music teacher would always insist on us rolling the letter "r" when we got to the word "ransomed" to make it stand out. I think that part of the reason why he did this to us was because we were a private Anglican school near Hull in East Yorkshire where our accent means that we often drop letters and put lots of emphasis on our vowels but not so much on other letters. Either that or he was just being picky.

    I remember singing this Glorious Hymn of Praise way back over 50 years ago, in Primary School Assemblies & @ Church on Sundays, & I Still Fervently Sing it Nowdays With Gusto To GOD For Ransoming, Healing, Redeeming, Forgiving & Saving A Wretched Sinner Called me.
    For it was with All Those Glorious Old Hymns that I Grew up Knowing & Loving GOD my Gracious Heavenly Father. These Hymns along with Sunday School & Church Meetings, Encouraged me & Strengthened my Faith In GOD.
    Why? Because These Glorious Old Hymns Are Like Mini Sermons In Themselves, They are Often Just Like Singing The WORD of GOD, Just Like The Psalmists of Old.
    So Let Us Remember That There Is Power In The Spoken or Sung WORD of GOD, & Let Us All Join In With All The Heavenly Hosts In Singing & Praising GOD With Gusto, Has We Bring Our Tributes of Praise To HIS Feet, Casting Our Crowns With All of Heaven Before HIM. Amen 🙌 🙏

    I found this hymn while listening to a sermon by Martin Lloyd Jones. He was quoting the lyrics but the title never came up. Obviously it was a hymn known and sung by the church. I had never heard it but I loved the lyrics he quoted. So the search was on to find and listen to this wonderful hymn. That search led me here. Thank you so much for the history of this hymn and the tune. Now I can learn it. These old hymns have so much preaching in them and I love the way they praise Jesus. Once again thank you.

    Wonderful. This hymn is so familiar to me that I tend to forget how meaningful the words are. I quite liked Graham Kendrick's reworking of the hymn (it's on RUclips). It didn't catch on, but the different tune and slightly changed words brought it home to me how profound it was.

    Luke, thank you so much for singing this beautiful hymn. The memories of my childhood came flooding back, the special moments with my parents, grandmother and my 2 brothers in our little church in Bothasig, South Africa... St John's. How i loved that church and how close we all were as a congregation. There were about 11 congregants plus us 6 in the beginning but we grew to quite a large congregation over the 8 years that i worshipped there. I have never found another church where i feel so loved and so close to God. Now, I have no church so i find my nourishment through people like you. So thank you for this wonderful ministry. God knew my soul was thirsty and he gave me drink.

    When I hear this song which is very rarely now, my mind goes back to my high school assembly days outside of this country. Since it was not in our former Church Hymnal it was not sung at church when I was growing up. It is in our current Seventh-day Adventist Hymnal (available online) but I have no memory of singing it in church here in the US. I rather like it and sing it from time to time from memory at home. Since our quarterly Sabbath School Lesson studies are currently on the book of Psalms perhaps this song based on Psalms 103 will come more prominently to notice. In fact, I will intentionally bring it to the notice of my local congregation. It is worth it. Thank you, Luke, for sharing. Have a very blessed 2024!
