I did a weekend trip to Bucharest from Chicago, IL. It was a great way to spend a long weekend. I saw almost everything and highly recommend the city for anyone interested in a lower-cost European capital. The Parliament Building is well worth a tour. The hallways, chandeliers, staircases, rooms, balcony, and height of the ceilings are all so impressive. You can drive a huge semi through the hallway and not touch the walls or ceiling! One interesting fact: Everything used to build the Parliament is sourced from inside Romania.
I am glad you liked it, and I like your confidence, but most definitely you have not seen everything in a weekend :) For a local, that is cute to hear.
Currently in Brasov for a few weeks. This is our second time here. My wife's family has a flat about a 10 minute walk from the city center. I absolutely love it here. We plan to retire here part time in a few years.

@attilakovacs1415Attila chill, ee were first here In Transylvania, Lets start with the beginning, 168 B.C King Rubobostes of Dacia founds the Dacian Kingdom, after him comes Burebista, which conquers in Moesia and in the east against the celts and pannonians, in 44 B.C he dies and The Kingdom Of Dacia shatters, it lasted between 168-44 B.C. In 87 A.D another Dacian Tribal king by the name Of Decebalus unites the Dacian Tribes again, up until 104 B.C, when the Roman Empire conquers them. The Romans from all over the empire come and assimilate the new province, fully inserting Latin as the language, mingling with the locals, and bringing in new traditions, laws and ways of life. These new people the “Daco-Romans” continue to live there even after the Roman empire retreats from the province. Eventually in the 500-600s A.D slavic peoples migrate into the area, where they mix with the daco-romans or as they are now known as proto Romanians, and this new mixture forms the Modern Romanian people by the 800s A.D. If you'd have crossed the Carpathians east and get to the region of Moldova, especially Bukovina, you'd find a Ukrainian and Russian feel to the cities there (e.g. Piatra Neamt, Suceava, even Iasi somewhat), if you go to Craiova you'll get a feel more like Bulgaria, and in Timisoara and Oradea there's a certain something to remind you of Austria and Hungary. ☺

@joelcrow haha this is true. First, we love the american films, brands and all this stuff. Second, Russia will always keep us together lol Edit: I just saw some news about some training with romanians and americans soldiers and we will actually build the biggest military base here for Nato soldiers
Many bloggers make a confusion between the "cubist" style buildings in the center and the communist ones. Vlad Tepes' real castle is Poenari Castle and not the Bran Castle. Peles Castle is far more interesting than Bran Castle.
The history of the 2:14th minute is more or less cosmeticized/dramatized, depending on which side you see things from, all the more so as I am not a fan of foreigners who tell us (to Romanians) how our history was (for edification see the case of Vlad Tepes aka Dracula), what is to remember is: Everything that is there like architecture, execution, materials is 100% Romanian... For those with other opinions: What I wrote here is my opinion, and my right to opinion I earned it by myself at the risk of my own life in December '89, so no one has given me this right as a gift, as in the case of others...
Maybe Vlad III stopped here (Bran Castle) once on a travel and spent two days... He never lived here (Bran Castle). There is an association of four Central European countries (Hungary, Slovakia, Czech Republic and Poland) called Visegrad 4! Visegrad was and still is part of the Kingdom of Hungary. It was here that the King of Hungary (Robert Charles of Anjou) convened the King's meeting in 1335. At that time, Slovakia was still part of the Kingdom of Hungary, so three kings attended (Casimir II Poland and John of Luxemburg, King of Bohemia). The point is that Vlad Tepes III, Prince of the Wallachian-lands, was imprisoned in this castle for a long time as a guest of the Hungarian King Hunyadi Matthias, but not in prison, of course. The prince lived mostly in the castle of Târgoviște, but the real "Dracula" castle is the Poenari castle! He lived here. Check it out, because this castle and its location are much better suited to Dracula's story than Bran Castle!
Ca fapt divers, Romania nu se află în Peninsula Balcanică. Balcanii geografic încep din Bulgaria și se întind peste Serbia, Croația ,Muntenegru, Bosnia și Herțegovina, Macedonia , Albania și Grecia.

I am amazed that you find Romania and Bucharest as a clean place. Probably you compare with the worst places from Albania. Traffic is horror as well. Maybe you had some luck with the moment when you visited and went through the most turistic places. But it's not like that at all. Brasov looks great if you do not leave the center. A lot of ruins in the city. Castles are fabulous, I can say, it worth vising them , but I have never seen so many people at Bran Castle. The county could be fantastic, we have everything, but we do not know to make tourism and to preserve what we have best.
Lot of bull about the parliament building and how the people suffered to be built, but all come to see mostly the marvels built by Ceausescu, not the sort of slums they cry for. Besides the parliament and central area Ceausescu also built 700,000 apartments in Bucharest, easily accessible for everyone, based on family size. He was not evil and saved the important buildings, like old churches, by shifting them to other locations, on rails. People could practice any sort of religion and traditions that time and the morals and work ethic were much stronger than today. He also made many heavy industrialized cities from the scratch, places to work and live for millions of Romanians. He dislocated entire mountains, to build the 150 km Transfagarasanu road, with the Vidraru dam/lake on top, entirely for defense purposes. Many other dams and large projects. Wonder how many pyramids could be built from 150 km of dislocated mountain, for projects meant not to serve as resting place of megalomaniac kings, but as defense line, to preserve the nation in the long run. Or the Danube - Black sea channel, bigger than Panama, started during the soviet occupation, with many political prisoners, finished by the army. The chief of secret police during soviet occupation was a Russian soviet with a changed Romanian names, installed to eradicate all sort of opposition to the regime, all pre war intellectuality and build on terror a brand new socialist man. To rip off Romanian economy and resources for 13 years and shift most production to USSR. When Ceausescu came to power in 1965 he released all political prisoners, replaced most soviet agent and sent them to USSR. During his first 15 years Romania opened to the world and strongly opposed the Warsaw pact aggression against Czechoslovakia. True that in the last few years he became a dictator, people couldn't speak freely, but was not the type of greedy wacko or blood thirsty criminal, like Gadafi, Sadam, Mao, etc. In dec 89 he was informed that large groups of soviet, hungarian and serbian agents entered Romania, with a clear intend to overthrow the regime and install in power soviet puppets. Exactly what happened after they hijacked the Romanian revolution, organized the diversion with the so called Ceausescu's loyalists, to send the millions from the streets home, by killing thousands of civilians, so they could grab power for their soviet agents. Those who destroyed Romania after 89 and sold it at scrap. Millions forced to leave their homes and families to look for work abroad. Well situation is improving but generations were sacrificed and lost.
Many people I've seen actively chose Romania as a retirement place. You know global politics are going well when Easter Europe became 1000x safer than the West. Must be all those doctors.

Brasov looks great if you do not leave the center. A lot of ruins in the city. Castles are fabulous, I can say, it worth vising them , but I have never seen so many people at Bran Castle.
The county could be fantastic, we have everything, but we do not know to make tourism and to preserve what we have best.
Romania is NOT Bucharest! You have to visit TRANSYLVANIA, that is RO
go'zal shaxar ikan
I would describe Bucharest as Paris without the smelly ppl
Dracula castle is not in Bran, it is in Bucharest, Bran is a big lie !!!
nope, it's in Poenari, Arges, ...the one in Bucharest (the water tower) built in 1906 was simply inspired by Poenari castle
Still poor country
It s not anymore, the power of purchase is almost on par with Poland, Spain etc.
Many people I've seen actively chose Romania as a retirement place. You know global politics are going well when Easter Europe became 1000x safer than the West. Must be all those doctors.
Vlad Tepes only punishes psychopaths so be nice!!!!
I call bullshit on the French architecture comment because Romanians are a proud people!
I would rather run to Dragula's residence for protection in Romania than the god damn church and I mean it!
