    Hi, there are many commenters below who think it is nuts to spend the time folding our undergarments, etc. And for some of us it is. But bear in mind that this system is designed for homes with very little storage which is typical in Japan as well as studio apartments, etc in the US. So for those of us with tiny houses it is worth it. And no doubt will come in handy for packing for traveling. Very clever of her and I appreciate her doing a RUclips vs. just selling her books.

      Very good points. I live in a small apartment in the US and am redoing my drawers based on this method. So far I've done one drawer and I'm so in love with it, I keep on opening it up just to see the new organization, lol. There's nothing better than being able to see everything as soon as you open a drawer - and not having to dig through mounds of clothing to find what you want!
      Something people should also keep in mind is that it's only a ton of work the first time you do it - after that, you just keep things neat along the way and it becomes much less work.

      Sue White Why not just purchase less clothing. I learned this with a hanging shoe bag. if I buy a new pair of shoes, I will need to get rid of a pair. The shoe bag only hold 12 pairs of shoes. So I am replacing instead of adding more.

      I lived in tiny apartments for years and the home I grew up in was super tiny as well, with 5 of us in 2 small bedrooms. Now that I have a (relatively) huge house, I still use these methods. Have less stuff, love what you have, organize it well. It's much easier for me to find what I'm looking for and I no longer end up destroying the whole drawer when I just want one thing. It saves time because I do not have to refold everything every time. It's an easier, less stressful way to live, no matter how much space you have. I even have empty drawers/shelves/cabinets now but I know that when I open the drawer/door I won't have a huge mess staring back at me. It's worth it.

      But it’s also good for Americans. Both the US and Japan are all about consumerism. Honestly, we don’t need half the nonsense we have. Focusing on just what is important-or makes you happiest-has changed my shopping habits immensely. I wish she’d published this book when I was in my 20s.

      It isn't just for saving space; I used to just throw my underwear in a drawer because there seemed no real logical point in folding them, but doing so it makes you feel good, seeing them like that and all. Less burdened, not as chaotic, etc. Idk, it's just some part of us that naturally feels happier and better seeing something so organized and simple. Plus, being organized like this can help you feel and be more productive, have better habits, manners(?), etc.

    This may appear silly but it's actually so relaxing to just fold your clothes and take proper care of them. It's worth the extra 5 min.

    After we had a house fire, every piece of clothing in our house was removed and professionally cleaned to remove smoke, etc. it came back beautifully wrapped and folded just like that. Dozens and dozens of boxes, all organized and perfectly folded. And every piece of other clothes, hung on hangers, individually professionally cleaned. It was so cool. I didn't throw enough stuff away so my drawers all fell to disarray again, but this woman is spot on. It does make a difference. You feel...lighter, less burdened. I'm now working my way through her book for the new year (2016). I can't wait!

    This actually works (bar the bras since I'm a much larger size than what is shown here!) but I managed to get what was once 3 draws of underwear (balled up or just stuffed in) to just one draw of socks, underwear, tights & sports style bras. Even managed to fit leggings in that one draw thanks to her folding method. I am impressed!

      I feel like there is no way to make my enormo-bras look decent in a drawer .. . i'm not even sure they could fit in my drawer standing up. i mean, my padded ones are sort of laying flat on each other but i only have 2. the enormous ones are folded and laid flat. i'll have ot see if they could fit upright but i dont want to damage them. plus .. . i have a lot!

Makes me feel happy knowing that everything is in order and I can clearly see what I need to get and I have enough space for everything. I've found things in the back of that drawer that I didn't know existed or something that didn't fit and was taking up space in there. Going to do my other drawers as well.❤ uwu

      +Lucy Alexander I know it seems silly now, but when you learn that your drawer might hold (arbitrary numbers) fifteen pairs of crumpled underwear, twelve and a half pairs of knotted socks, five pairs of character/fandom socks, and two crushed bras ...
      But might hold twenty pairs of konmari underwear, twenty pairs of konmari socks, sixteen pairs of konmari character/fandom socks, and five well-preserved konmari bras ...
      You just might be happy your mom taught you folding underwear, especially when you want more fandom socks, like say Black Butler or Doctor Who. ;)

    it looks neat and after organizing stuff like shown it's also easy to find what you are looking for, but imho it's not a practical way to store socks and underwear. Because: You don't want it to "just look nice," but you want to use it, too. When you start pulling out things, there will be gaps, which allow everything else to fall over, unravel, or get disorganized in other ways - especially when using moving elements as storage, like a drawer or underbed box. Then you want to add washed things and squeeze them in, but by doing so, you start to move other things around. This solution looks like it needs re-doing most stuff every month or so, which doesn't sound like a good idea. I'd rather do it twice a year, when I switch between summer and winter clothes.

    When it came to my undies, I did steps 1-3. I didn't do the last two steps of rolling them up because that would've made them so small and near impossible for me to identify them. Anyway after following her steps, my underwear drawer is nice, organized, and so pretty. I can fit way more in the drawer than I imagined. Also, it's so easy to just pull and use now. Before I just had them thrown in the drawer and wasted minutes leafing through every morning trying to find one I wanted to wear and figuring out which ones I had left. As for the socks, I still have them stuffed one inside the other. I just like that style better.

    As much as I love this technique, it doesn't really work very well for removing a pair of socks from the middle of the row, or digging for a certain pair of underwear. I often find that when I store stuff this way, and I remove one, I tend to pull others out of order, or they fall over from how they were standing, leading me to take more time reorganizing the items again

      I don't. I fold the cups together and pop them both forward and put everything behind then and put them in a row that way. She says clothes tell you how they want to be folded so it's personal preference. I think h she's giving example and showing just one version of what could be compared to chaos.

      If you've got big bras, fold one cup into the other. Only do this if the gore if flexible enough to avoid damage, but it usually is. Then you can sideways stack the cups-in-cups.
      Unless you've got plenty of space in which case you can lie them flat and have them gently overlap. Then you'd see every one and if they're different colours it could look very pretty.

    My OCD is killing me! She shoved a small pair of socks in between a pair of bigger ones, then continued to place bigger things next to it. I CAN'T HANDLE IT! 😂 She also would have had more room if she folded the bras in half & collapsed them into each other 🤷🏻‍♀️😅.

      Katrina Jimenez that can damage certain bras, and you can’t collapse heavily padded bras

    why not just loosely roll? that seems so much easier and will still result in items that "stand up" in a space-saving way

    • @msl5131

      Chaviva Friedman I totally agree. This is an extremely long (in the scheme of things) method of folding underwear & certainly excessive when it comes to ones bras! Hooking it closed before putting away takes too much time & sucks when it's time to wear it! I respect a lot of what she is doing but totally disagree with her wrinkle-producing folding methods!

    • @knownuser0815
      @knownuser0815 9 лет назад +3

      Chaviva Friedman In her book, she says that 'socks need space to relax' (for luck she didn't write 'Pants need space to breathe') ... Well, as long as it 'sparks joy', just roll it :D

    • @knownuser0815
      @knownuser0815 9 лет назад

      Note to self: after several months of folding I completely dismissed her method. Rolling fits my containers better. Whenever I folded I ended up with different sized rectangles which just took away valuable space - a joyspark-breaker :)
