I recall reading somewhere, I think it may have been in the literature that came with the CD, that Otis played this solo alone in a completely dark room in the studio. It was in the middle or after of a recording session, and wasn't really part of the set. I may misremember some of the facts, but you get the idea. The man was a genius.
I am 38 & a pianist myself. I've been playing since I was 6 years old & I completed all my grades 1-8 in both practical & theory. I've also taught piano on & off in the last fifteen years, as a side job. With how busy life gets I don't play as much as I should, but when I do & I'm alone on my keys, the blues is my absolute favourite thing to play! It's my favourite genre of music to listen to & always has been. This particular piece is spine tingling, it gave me chills & made the tiny hairs on my arms stand up high! It sounds absolutely amazing! Thank you so much for uploading these insanely talented pianists. I very luckily came across your channel this afternoon by wonderful accident. I subbed, saved many videos to my playlists & I'll definitely be back soon! 🎹🎶🤸🏼♀️🎵💃🏼🎶🤸🏼♀️🎵💃🏼🎶
When Otis plays, it sounds like he is playing with four hands!! A unique fullness and depth is present the like of which I have not heard in any other classical blues pianist. He's the best in my opinion ☺
I purchased an L.P. of Muddy Waters in 1962 at the "Newport Jazz Festival" where Otis Spann was his pianist. What a truly Jazz/Blues expert on the "88". Michael Mctague
Love it when Otis plays the wrong chord in the right hand at the very first bar and no one notices because it sounds so freakin' amazing anyway. One of my favourite solo pieces out there.
And we are in the presence of another GREAT. My favorite In The Dark. I salute Mr. Blues Piano Sheets. Again. For reminding us. Mr. Blues Piano Sheets: I've got a fuller than full plate of "Blue Notes" on my plate at the moment. If yer interested in them latest news, gimme a shout, willya, Sir. Y'all stay safe now, hear? ... from somewhere in Southern Yurrope...
Upper layer is so drooling and swingy that it has filled me with joy. It sounds simple and easy to play in first look; but when I dived deep, I learned the meaning of 'Legends'
Otis doesn't waste his time with "nice" sounding chords. He goes in for the attack all the time - for the hardest hitting, fullest sounding chords and fills, adding grace notes (I believe they are called, as I've not been taught classically - I called them bent notes, a slur, or sliding up to a note !!!). He doesn't just add in a grace note (the semi-tone lower), he gives the grace note a grace note ! ie. if he is playing the G and Bb above middle C, he hits the F, then F# for a split second, before hitting the intended G and Bb together. This gives a fatter sound and harder feel.
++snakehips81 You can't literally bend or slide notes on the piano as they are fixed, so it's grace notes that are used. Still, it's only a name. That's interesting what you say about his technique of extra grace notes. There's probably a specific term for that as well, but I've no idea what it might be. It doesn't really matter although sometimes technical terms (if they're widely known) can save a hell of a lot of bother having to explain what you mean.

I've been listening to this for 40 years and it gets me every time. One of the best blues piano works of all time.

Do you have any tutorial videos or any lessons? Just curious.
He's the bluesiest of them all.

He is good but then again there are many others who are just as good and in some cases better. Amos Milburn and Little Johnny Jones to name a couple.

Otis Spann's blues rips the tears right out of my eyes from the sheer joy of hearing the blues played like no other. God Bless Otis.
The best bluespianist ever.
I'ver loved his music since I was in my late teens, and I still do, still thrills me and always will.
And we are in the presence of another GREAT. My favorite In The Dark.

Note to self: warm up before attempting blues in E. This is brilliant!
Great musicians can magically change your mood - Otis Spann fits the bill
Greatest Blues piano player ever. Otis Spann. WOW, AWESOME
One of the greatest musicians this country has produced -- along with Muddy, Wolf, BB, Freddy, Albert and so many more.
Thank you! *Otis Spann - March 21, 1930 - April 24, 1970* - Shared on FB, March 21, 2019

Dang! this IS the blues
Pretty good piano playing
GENIUS !!!
To be able to play this, anywhere near as good as this would be awesome. Back to my beginner blues books. ;-)

If your upper layer is drooling and swingy, I'd say your problems are bigger than the blues.
amazing

Johnnie Johnson was a much better pianist than bro Otis. I'm an old man who played the chittlin circuit and saw them both many times.
COOL

Stupid, putting commercials in the middle of a piece of music like this. Just stupid, YT.
It's not youtube, it's the person who uploaded the video that monetized it even though it's not his work ( he can since there's no copyright anymore)
Who you calling stupid, are you talking to me ? Cmon men i think ..I am going to kick you but out of here . Lol
