    You're gonna love that center console dinghy. Having a knowledgeable and respected surveyor is insurance for a boat owner's peace of mind, if nothing else. At least that was our case. I'm still disappointed it took y'all this long to get this far in the repair work, but at the same time I'm glad you got to experience a bit of coastal Alabama history, the sites and enjoyed some good seafood shacks. But gettin' hassled by the Marine Police was a chapper. Hope they cut you some slack 🤞🤞 Hoping you're getting back on course with your boating adventure with fair winds and smooth cruising. Looking forward to the next update.

    Am currently living in house while total renovations are taking place. Arrrrg. If that's not enough, a storm came and damaged roof shingles. Soooo much push back from insurance and all the usual (after 7 months and counting) delays, waste, and silly excuses from builder. Just too much at once and no end in sight. I can really appreciate your delimma. I may have to start living on my little 23' boat just to escape this insanity.

    When my youngest was 2 or 3 we took the kids to Ft Morgan for the afternoon. We explored all over the fort, up and down the stairs (which made the wife nervous!), in all the batteries and magazines billet areas, pretty much ever room. In the westernmost batteries IIRC my youngest whined to leave the room. When I asked her why she said "It's grumpy". I couldn't remember that she'd ever used that word, especially about a room. My wife had been snapping pictures with her DLSR all day, including 2 looking down that same room, in one of them was an "orb" (probably just a bit of dust reflecting the flash). I don't know about ghosts, but I can't explain my daughters behavior, she was fine as soon as we left that room.

Most boats violate the no wake zones and we rarely see anyone pulled over. I wish I had found your channel sooner. We've been in OBA since Feb1. Michiganders stick together down here. If the engine suffered a sudden stop during the strike, a thorough examination of the engine and transmission would be advisable. (Probably doesn’t apply if there happened to be a Drive-Saver in the drivetrain.) It would be a total bummer to discover after all the other repairs that the engine and/or transmission needed fixing too. May the odds be in your favor!

      I learned all about Drive Savers one dark and stormy late afternoon when I managed to run over a substantial tow line when doing a panic re-anchoring as the winds howled and the nearby bridge seemed to be getting much too close for comfort. At the time we were towing a large dinghy and had let it out after we thought the anchor was set for the night. The Drive Saver did what it was supposed to do and sacrificed itself to save the transmission, engine mounts, etc. Unfortunately, the former owner didn’t leave a spare onboard and, in a single screw trawler, without it means no propulsion until it is replaced. Need I mention that this happened just as a long holiday weekend was beginning? SeaTow got involved and we spend several involuntary and expensive marina days cooling our heels and awaiting parts. A spare was purchased and stayed in its box for years until the boat was sold. Carry an umbrella to prevent rain…

    I was afraid of that. Im not a boat engineer or mechanic, but IMO the engine mount stringers, being compromised even a little, should be outright replaced. Not doing so leaves a weakness that may cause issues later.

    • @randolphh8005
      @randolphh8005 3 месяца назад +1

      The “stringer” is typically fiberglass just molded into a beam over wood or foam core. If properly reconstructed it will be stronger than the original, and is easily glassed to the undamaged areas. Repairs often use higher quality materials than the original. One of the advantages of fiberglass!

    • @nerdgarage
      @nerdgarage 3 месяца назад +1

      @@randolphh8005 It's unaddressed damage to the underlying core that concerns me, not the fibreglass.

      @@nerdgarage I’m not sure if the hull is cored, but the stringer obviously is. Reconstruction should include an assessment of the core, and replacement/repair of any damaged core.
      I have a fully foam cored 40’ twin diesel. It is not difficult to repair.
      If Andromeda has wood core, it requires more careful inspection and repairs, but it is doable and will be as strong or stronger if properly done.
      Remember that cores are used to increase strength without adding as much weight. Typically on an engine bed, extra glass is specified, and sometimes stronger core materials.
      I’d be more worried about the engine/transmission having some as yet undiscovered damage from the impact.

      @@randolphh8005 Well I'm a software and electronics engineer not a nautical engineer so I can't debate the issue. What got to me was the disagreement noted in one of the last 2 videos between the insurance and the surveyer (i think) about the replacement of the entire stringers. I'll side with any engineer arguing for more repairs than what an insurance company wants. But I do tend to overengineer everything, whether it's software or mechanics.
      As for the undiagnosed engine/transmission. I agree with you entirely although honestly it'd never occured to me previously. That entire system took the hit, so it's hard to imagine that at least the transmission didn't take some of it.

    • @randolphh8005
      @randolphh8005 3 месяца назад +2

      @@nerdgarage I didn’t see that disagreement, but “replacing” a stringer implies that the stringer is a separate part of the hull. That is not typically true. Stringers are often formed by using wood or foam. But, the actual structure the engine gets bolted to is the fiberglass that encapsulates the wood or foam. So while the wood may offer some strength, and foam even less, the bulk of the strength comes from the fiberglass beam that is created during the initial hull layup. Fiberglass is pretty easy to repair and bonds well to surrounding glass with proper technique. In some cases the engine mounts may need to be modified to create better attachment points.
      I had a family member that hit bottom and damage the Port transmission mount and strut and prop, on my boat many years ago. It was not a difficult repair once we had access to the area, and we did improve the mounting in the process of the repair. Then 7 years ago I repowered the boat with new engines and transmissions, which required a reworking of the mounts, and some fiberglass work was done to accommodate changes in the engines and transmissions. With all the newer cloths and resins available, we had no problem creating a stronger mount and stringer system, while leaving all the original glass in place.
