I am a man of 82 years old , I worked on installing the mounting blocks for the radar system on the " Long Beach ".
This took place at the Fore River ship yard in Quincy , Ma.. The welder and I were working on two wooden planks, so high up that at first it scared the crap out of me. In time I became use to the high and the danger that we faced daily.. A memory not soon forgotten, later I joined the US Navy and became a Seabee.

The USS Long Beach was named after my hometown of LB, Ca.. Even when I was a kid in the 80's, tried my best to use the kit for the model. Fast forward several years and after I joined the Navy the last time I saw her when my first ship was leaving San Diego Bay and the USS L.B. was moored at Pt. Loma but there was nothing but her main deck and below that was visible. She has a very unique hull for the early 1990s. So streamlined and so graceful. Sad to see her go. Sad to see that the 21st Century US Navy has a "cookie cutter" fleet.

My Grandfather served on the Long Beach, his stories about his time of the Long Beach when I was young used to always captivate me. I remember when he told me that they had started recycling the ship and it was going to be turned into radioactive razor blades. Much Love

I served aboard 5 ships in my 12 years in, a DDG, an FBM submarine, two submarine tenders, and lastly a Los Angeles class fast attack.
Every. Ship. I. Was. Ever. On. was decommissioned and scrapped, except for the DDG which was sunk off Kauai as part of a RimPac exercise (DDG-14, and they couldn't sink her, they had to board and set scuttling charges to send her down). The reactor plants of the two nuclear submarines are in storage in Washington State, at Hanford.

I served in the Marine Detachment for three years on the USS LongBeach when it's home port was in LongBeach & then moved to Coronado down in San Diego. I did two West Pac cruises. This was an awesome ship & I have some great memories from California and the two overseas cruises. RIP CGN-9... Thank you for the video.

I reported aboard the Long Beach in April 1988. I was an electrician's mate in the nuclear propulsion program. I was onboard for almost 4 years. I was on 2 west pac cruises, one of which turned into a circumnavigation of the globe as we escort USS Enterprise to the Atlantic for her refueling. I went on terminal leave in March 1992 just a few week before what I thought was to be her next refueling.

I understand MT and FTM ratings ( that makes sense )........... Just curious, and asking seriously.

The USS LONG BEACH is the fastest most majestic ship I ever served on, and I served on 20. If was a sin to scrap this hull. any American port city would have been proud to maintain this nautical work of art for generations to come. all we have now are pictures and for a lucky few, memories of cutting through the sea like no other.

Decommissioned nuclear ships are really not candidates for use as memorials.
To deactivate them, you have to gut the ship in order to remove the reactor plants along with their contaminated auxiliary systems, step one being the removal of the superstructure. At the end of the plant ripout, there isn't much ship left, sorry. and, unlike the Russians, we don't leave intact decommissioned nuclear warships lying about for decades.

Worked in the shaft alley below the mess deck Starboard side caring for the 50 & 70 ton chill water A/C units and demineralizer units .. Also worked the 20 ton units for the refrigeration.
A- Gang berthed just above after steering in those days... it took me months to finally get used to the noise and vibrations to be able to sleep in that compartment !
The Grey Lady was a beautiful and clean ship with excellent crew and Captain.

I was on the 9 during the Viet Nam deployment in 71-72, FA DO, I remember many watches during transit on the bridge watching the sun drop below the horizon, and come up. My watch job was the Wep Officer in CIC when OTL. I did three one month line periods, was there when Haiphong was mined (did not get any shots), was denied a shot because Nancy was in Hanoi ( had a target, a Talos on the rail, all the lights on the WAC), I watched the 32 with the guys on watch, and we found as many targets as ops div did. I remember hearing Bird Free, then hearing the noise. I also did two years in Mare Island before the cruise during the overhaul, staying in the BOQ, making many trips to Tahoe. When I first got to my bunk and settled in I remember thinking three years would be forever, but it seems like I was headed for Clark a day or two later when my time was up. I remember the ride on the big mama to the carrier, waiting three days for the COD to Da Nang, spent maybe 30 seconds in Da Nang. I got an early out, about three weeks early. I remember being so short I could fall in the cracks between the floor tiles. Does anyone remember my boss Frank, or the 5 chiefs I worked for, I learned a lot from all of them. I just looked at all the videos, hoping to see some of the guys in FA. I am now 76, still remember, wish I could do it again.

Went to the galley and just as I got there a guy threw up in his tray and it slid past several others. It turned into a mass puke session, I turned around and skipped that meal. LOL

ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS VIDEO AND WHAT A TRUE GEM SHE WAS!!!!......I AM ONE OF THOSE (Most likely in the Minority of Thought!) That STILL BELIEVES THAT THERE IS A VERY STRONG NEED FOR THE "NUCLEAR" CLASS OF CRUISERS!!!.....I UNDERSTAND THE ADDED COSTS AND TRAINING THAT ARE NEEDED ABOARD SUCH VESSELS, BUT TO BE ABLE TO GO OUT TO BLUE "DEEP" WATER AND BE ABLE TO GO JUST ABOUT ANYWHERE WITHOUT HAVING TO WORRY ABOUT TAKING ON BAD "Sabotaged" FUEL FROM FOREIGN PORTS (I.e. Fuel with water or other possible corrosives within!) .....I AM FULLY AWARE THAT ALL FUEL TAKEN ONTO OUR A. BURKE CLASS DDG's IS METICULOUSLY TESTED, BUT WE ALL KNOW HOW PULLING ONE OF OUR WARSHIPS INTO POSSIBLE HOSTILE REFUELING PORTS CAN LEAD TO DISASTER! JUST REMEMBER THE BRAVE SAILORS KILLED, AND INJURED ON THE USS COLE!!....... IM AM 53 YEARS OLD, NEVER SERVED (Although I tried to Enlist in '91 (First Iraqi War) BUT THEY SAID I WAS TOO OLD!! AND THEREFORE HARDER TO TRAIN (As the Recruitment Office said that People that are Older, if even by a few years then their Bootcamp Soldiers, Sailors, Thats where the highest contingent of washouts arise from...(I guess they are the experts on these matters!)........BUT I ALSO KNOW THE THE A. BURKE DDG's ARE THE B-E-S-T "MOST LETHAL" DESTROYER ON THE GLOBE!!!......JUST CHANG THE WARHEADS TO NUCLEAR TIPPED VERSION OF THE 60 "TOMAHAWK" (Telephone Poles) AND YOU HAVE YOURSELF A CONTINENT SWEEPER!! LOL! ; ) .........BUT I STILL THINK THAT WE COULD USE MUCH MORE "TRUE" CRUISERS TO EXPONENTIALLY BOLSTER OUR (BY FAR, THE BEST IN THE WORLD NAVY!) ......I REALIZE THAT THERE ARE STILL A FEW SEMI-ACTIVE TICONDEROGA CRUISERS THAT THEY CAN SEND OUT, BUT AS I UNDERSTAND, MOST ARE IN PORT JUST SITTING THERE!!...(I JUST HOPE MY HERO, DONALD J. TRUMP CAN HOLD THE HOUSE AN SENATE FOR THE REST OF HIS TERM!! I PRAY TO GOD FOR A BID RED WAVE TOMORROW!! ) AND I THINK THAT WE WILL SEE SOME REAL MUCH NEEDED UPGRADES TO THESE "LIGHT CRUISERS" AND HAVE ANOTHER 2-5 MORE "FORD CLASS" CVN-F's KEELS LAID DOWN......HAVE ELECTRIC BOAT COME UP WITH A SUCCESSOR TO OUR AGING "OHIO CLASS" BOOMER SUBS!..........AND THE US, GB, NATO AND OUR GREAT FRIENDS INDIA (DON'T FORGET ISRAEL!) .........AND WORLD PEACE IS IN THE BAG!!!...FOREVER! AS EVEN 3 FRONT WAR WOULD NEVER EVER BE CONTEMPLATED BY OUR "NOT SO NICE, GLOBE SHARERS!!... i.e. CHINA, RUSSIA, IRAN, NORTH KOREA (WHICH IS CHINA's LITTLE WOODE "PUPPET" THAT JUST MIGHT GIVE CHINA A UNEXPECTED "SPLINTER" RIGHT IN CHINA's FINGER ONE DAY! LOL) .........WELL ENOUGH OF MY ALL CAPS "BLABBING" LOL! .......JUST LOVE TO SEE OUR NAVY UP TO WHERE IT SHOULD BE!!!......LETS FACE IT.....WHAT DOES (AND ALWAYS HAS) THE USA MANUFACTURED THE BEST......DEFENSIVE, AND OFFENSIVE W-E-A-P-O-N-S !!!!!.......AND WE HAVE ALWAYS NEEDED TO!!......IT STARTED WAY BACK IN THE 1770's THEN AGAIN RIGHT BACK AT IT IN 1812.....THEN WE "AHEM" BECAME ALLIES WITH ENGLAND, (BUT YOU CAN BET YOUR BUTTS THEY WERE A WATCHING THE MEXICAN-AMERICAN WAR!.....AND OH-BOY WOULD THINGS BE MUCH!DIFFERENT IF THE USA CIVAL WAR TURNED OUT DIFFERENTLY!!!..... MAGA 2020!!!...AND PENCE IN 2024!!!........

Enroute, saboteurs drained the lube from the #1 prop'/-shaft bearings and needed to be in drydock for repairs. The new bearing was shipped from Norfolk VA thru the Panama Canal to Hawaii. We were there for 3 additional weeks while the battle group steamed onward to Subic Bay. I was one of 3 pilot rescue swimmers as well as a machinist on board the Beach. It was a good ship. Solid. The Capt. was nuts but the crew was good and the Admiral as well as my Weps officer Capt. Shulemyer is a great memory. Dave Toulon was my closest friend as my partner on the team. We did a recovery operation off of So. Cal when we were the first boat on the scene after a mid-air collision had taken place. In 1986, we were completing live-fire drills off San Clemente Island. The 2 F-14's got scrubbed but 2 lear jets took their place from North Island. They collided due to a miss understanding /the wrong turn and thus I was assigned the job of in water hookups of all debris including the majority of one fuselage. I have other crazy stories, but that one is at the top. I spent time on just about every part of that boat, including the brig, minus the nuke room. I spent many nights on the o9 level just hanging out. As a ship swimmer, you have the privilege now and then to roam about. I did just that. Got some great shots and again, as a ship swimmer and friend of the Admiral, it played well as I was on deck during any live fire or Helo operations. Sorry I was too young to appreciate the boat history. I had BUD'S on the brain as this was not my first choice and thus ended my Navy Career before she sails with Jersey on a West Pack Tour. Her last. Hey MR1 David, you ever get off the boat? You ruined my life bro, but only for a moment. I hope you found what you wanted by stopping me from what was my calling. I forgive you. One time when i was at the helm the order was give for a flank turn; it was a new duty station for me. We were going 35 knots, the idea was to miss a Nationalist Chinese fishing boat. We wen't over almost 45 degrees which is the point it would capsize. Sick bay was busy due to many bunks coming out of place and striking sleeping sailors. It was in the middle of the night, the Captain came out of his quarters which was just off the bridge screaming at me. I was an E-3 and all I could say was followed orders Sir! I worked on the deck in 3rd division but we were the ones the quarter masters used to steer the ship. That was the last time I did a shift at the helm. I was sent to the rescue team after that. We had a boat that we launched from the ship to do what ever, things like pick up a downed pilot but the boat was seldom used.

Any truth to the story that what prompted the addition of the 5" guns was during deployment off Vietnam the Long Beach got into trouble when it was attacked by NV PT boats. They had no guns at that time, just missiles and had to call for help in defending against the PT boats. After that incident the guns were added. Also I heard that the "billboard" radar (32/33) was a failed attempt at phased array radar. I understood that it was very complicated and relied upon a lot of mechanical equipment to provided the proper scanning function. True?

My father worked on her at the Fore River Shipyard. All workers were invited to a ceremony, launching or commissioning I guess. He told me that a navy plane crashed in to the ship he and the other builders were supposed to watch the ceremony from. They kept everybody who was on that ship there for a while. He then went to find a phone, figuring the family would be worried, but they said they hadn't heard of any crash. The crash was never reported in the media. He had a small piece he said landed next to him that he kept with his original invitation to the ceremony. I never have found any reference to the crash on the web. Has anyone else ever heard this story? The ceremony may have taken place down south. I don't think it was at the shipyard. I guess it could have been hushed up because of the Cold War.

Great vid - while I have never served in any military I can appreciated ships like her, especially since the US (just like any other Navy except the Russian Navy (and doesn't that hurt!)) lost capability with the loss of nuclear cruisers and destroyers! Non other ships can keep up with the nuclear powered carriers after all if they go full steam ahead - they'd run out of fuel long before the carrier is half-done...maybe the US should have bought the Kirovs from the Russians? :D

It's only in name because the Arleigh Burke is essentially a light Cruiser so I guess I shouldn't complain so much we are getting a light Cruiser 4 a billion freaking dollars??? Can you give someone of a punch but it cannot take one you expect this vessel to go up against those Russian Cruisers blow for blow?

You need to see the DCS simulations on the Grim Reapers channel on sinking a US aircraft carrier. The amount of firepower needed to overwhelm an AEGIS VLS ship is incredible. Each ship has a substantial number of SM2s onboard, which work well for shooting down other missles. 4 or 5 of those, and add a aircraft carrier, and 2 subs, abd suddenly you can dominate 1000 square miles of ocean.
The sim that did the best was a WW2 battleship fleet. Its the only thing with the armor to absorb what the battle group can throw at it.

Jim, I should remember you, but don't. I served aboard her 69-70, RIF'd in February 70 to attend collge, when we returned from WestPac. Wasn't fond of sea duty, but loved the ship. RM2 at the time, worked receivers, transmitters, and tape cutting. My clearest memory is standing on the Admirals wing watching a Talos launch off San Clemente Island during a sea exercise, watching the missile head out to port, then return to overfly the ship. I swear that missile flew between the two superstructures.
I also recall that the two 5" rifles did a good job of missing San Clemente island. At least, that was the scuttlebutt at the time.
I have to admit I miss the ship and seeing the photos of the hull in Bremerton made my heart ache.

She shouldn't have never been decommissioned she should have other ships in her class shame on United States Navy procurement Department she was one of a kind she was laid from the Keel as a complete Cruiser haul. Unlike the Ticonderoga class Cruiser an Arleigh Burke class Destroyer she was from Kiel to top Mast May to be a cruiser in my opinion United States Navy's having an identity crisis with his surface combat ships losing the understanding of which is a destroyer and which is a cruiser and a destroyer costing way too much she's a light Cruiser at best and that's a stretch that's why we need to invest in frigates fast frigates inexpensive frigates

I just don't understand this nuclear power deal. The amount of diesel a conventional ship uses is staggering. If 1960s technology worked then and they still use n power for subs what can be the excuse that every Naval ship doesn't use Nuke power. Or at least all the flat deck amphibious carriers.. There is some sort of fuckery afoot..I've heard explanations from cost to build, to safety, to the oil companies lobby against not using oil, to the cost to store the depleted uranium, None of the convenient excuses make sense to me at least. Especially today with the Co2 is bad scam they're using to kill capitalism and western democracies for a Chinese government model that's an amalgamation of all the worst parts of capitalism mixed with communism to terrorize their citizens, fascism to fund their capitalism and unrestricted environmentally capitalism to keep enough greed and personal benefit to make folks not sabotage the plans of the elites as long as they get a small chunk of change. Anyways I live these old Navy vids. I left the Navy in 1991. I was stationed at LB Shipyard aboard the USS Cayuga LST 1186.

    • @DefenseChannel

The official reason given by the US Navy for abandoning nuclear propulsion for any surface warship that isn't an aircraft carrier was basically costs. With that being said, a single lucky strike on a surface warship with a nuclear reactor can be deadly for everyone. Hence why the US Navy surrounds its carriers with subs, cruisers, and destroyers. This can't be a US thing however, as to my knowledge the only country even discussing nuclear surface ships is Russia. And they cant afford it.
