Thank you so much for the video! 8 inches of snow and the relatively new snow blower wouldn't work. I found this video for my husband. He was a bit skeptical but now we're both smiling. Worked like a charm.
My 24" craftsman is getting old! Used it 2 weeks ago and it wasn't throwing snow barely at all and the engine never revved up like it usually does when engaged. I watched this andsaw that the tensioner is way up and the belt isn't pulling tight. Tightened it up and now I think we are good! Thanks thanks thanks!
Terrific video, explained wear on cover. I saw the wear of belts rubbing on cover and thought something was terribly wrong on older MTD snowblower I was replacing belts on. Showing proper belt adjustment method very useful. Thanks for saving me lots of time figuring what could be wrong when this was pretty typical issue.
Damn, you covered everything except what I needed. My auger idler pulley does not SNAP back like yours does. My goes back slowly, without any sort of strength or snapiness.
thanks, i've been trying to figure out how to do this for years. when my machine won't throw snow like i want , i replace the belt. i've had my "brute" by MTD for close to 20 yrs. again thanks , even the manual didn't explain it well.

Just what I needed! I had to use my snow blower today and it was barley throwing snow, The belt is fine. Can I use this method with the bolts to make the auger more powerful? It spins a bit even if the handle isn't depressed. I have the same exact blower. Barely used, Thanks!
If the augers are spinning and the handle is not pressed on, then your belt is too tight! Back off the adjustment until the augers stop spinning when the handle is not depressed. Thanks for watching!
@@JohnsonsSmallEngines They don't spin full speed, but one does mor than the others. It's the one towards the outside. Will making this adjustment help it throw the snow better? Thanks!
OK, so I had the same problem with a 2010 26" Craftsman snowblower. I first replaced the friction drive disc, no improvement. Next I replaced the drive belt, no improvement. So I started the blower with the belt guard removed, placed it in drive and saw the drive belt was slipping. Not enough tension on the drive belt. I removed the tension pulley and noticed the tension spring was not tight in the housing. I turned the spring so it was tight in the housing and replaced the tension pulley, at the same time I ordered a new spring. Once I replaced the pulley assembly I stared it up, engaged the drive, and it took off like a bat out of hell.
Craftsman 247.886640 My GF has a similar model and it keeps throwing belts. She has leanred to put it back on. I plan on getting a new belt and inspecting drive system, pullys, alignment, etc. And any tension adjustment availible. ANY ADVICE?
Tough to diagnose without seeing the machine. Make sure the plastic belt cover isn’t worn through as the cover is also a belt guide. You must make sure the cover is installed after installing the new belt. Also make sure if there any belt guides near the engine pulley they are properly adjusted. Make sure the engine pulley lines up correctly with the auger and idler pulley so the belt is running straight. Make sure belt is properly adjusted. Again, impossible to diagnose without seeing the machine.
I normally will as shown in the video, when you feel tension around half way down will put the belt in a good spot at idle. You may need to replace your belt if it is still slipping. Sometimes the belt get thinner when they wear and they sit very deep pin the pulley grooves so they may still slip.
@@JohnsonsSmallEngines the thing is i have been replacing with new ones... this is the third time this winter my MTD mastercraft been slipping and busting belt and belt cover........ lucky last sunday it blew again but only one and knew right away what happen and got another set.. i feel like when the lever is off they are WAYYY too slack and just with the vibrations from the motor, they could slip out!!!
(1) check to make sure it’s correctly running all the way around pulleys (2) you bought a after market belt and it is the incorrect size ?(3) you bought the incorrect belt? (4)you need to readjust belt tension?
@@JohnsonsSmallEngines i have an mtd. i did by the belt threw a mtd dealer. i know it correct belt. the belt is on the right way. the adjustment on the cable is up the farest so i cant adjust more. maybe could be the cable
Make sure the belt says MTD or has MTD numbers on it. Double check to make sure the part number is correct to your model. Cables normally don’t stretch to much some have an adjustment at the handle but if the adjustment is down below then it most likely it doesn’t have the adjustment up at the handle. Maybe the idler pulley can be moved in? I would need to see the machine to help you more. Good luck and please let me know how you make out..
Very nice short, precise and concise video addressing all the issues of a craftsman auger not moving. Thank you

Check shear pin on the one side that isn’t spinning very fast. You may have a sheared pin.
Can you adjust the belt by moving the pulley tensioner inward ?
Yes, if it allows you to.
Great video, but how difficult is it to replace the belt if needed? I have pretty much the exact model in grey.
Check thjs video out. It may help you. I dop not have a video yet on the model you have. ruclips.net/video/8FdWYUt7Mo0/видео.html

Buddy I have the same one almost new I mean 6 years old but not used. So it won’t start what do you think could be?

Johnson's Small Engines Thanks man for replying. I watched some other videos and it was carburetor. It was clogged now starts right a way
You have old fuel in it and the Carb needs to be changed or replaced.

how much free should it be at idle....... my auger belts are always slipping would that mean the pulley is too loose at idle?

Brad, is the drive belt adjustment on the MTD the same idea or is something different?
If the bracket looks the same the I would say Yes.
