- This was our first time at a Tesco. Going to these British grocery/convenient stores was a cool experience after hearing so much about them. It might sound boring just going to a food store but it's interesting to us to see all the little differences.

yeah just ignore all the express/local/extra tags etc, we Brits know all supermarkets by two types : there's "little Tesco" or "big Tesco".
the little one is like nipping in to a corner shop for essentials, big one is where you do your weekly shop, same applies to the other supermarket brands like Asda/Sainsburys/Morrisons :D

Haha yeah we say that in our house too.
Tesco express is much more expensive than a standard Tesco store. The larger supermarkets are mostly built away from the town centres, and are designed more for car drivers doing a weekly shop. In recent years several supermarkets have diversified into "express/local" stores to compete with the independents and mom & pop stores. This followed a decline in shoppers that would only do one big weekly shop, and the increase in online shopping.
Well explained. The "express" and "local" versions of supermarkets are much smaller and more expensive with less variety compared to the big ones. You will basically never get a good large supermarket in a city centre.(although I'm sure there are exceptions)

I feel like express stores have become a lot more expensive compared to superstores recently (that and literally no offers anymore lol)
They are usually a few pence more expensive, due to the council rates being higher in the town centre.

I do that all the time on purpose, one of lifes little cheeky pleasures. 😂
It often boils down to which supermarket sells the cheapest/largest bag for life bags and those that sell the insulated frozen food bags. I pre chill mine in the freezer at home and take a frozen gel pack as well in them. Never dispose of the free ones that come with online frozen and chilled food purchases from online farm/butchers shops when delivered by a carrier/parcel service.
Tesco (main stores) here even do insulated bottle bags for wine, large enough to hold two bottles of bubbly, ideal for that picnic or the hot journey home. They're free in my local Off Licence but the same wine is almost twice the price! Wider choice and more knowledge though.
@@tonys1636 A 'bag for life' that usually lasts a couple of weeks or so. Perhaps the 'life' they are referring to, is that of a standard house fly.

"Unexpected item in bagging area" how I hate that little phrase. The self checkout weighs each item after you scan it. If you don't put them items on the scales it gets very upset.

Especially annoying when the scale is in a different location to usual.
The items are placed after scanning in a weighing area. This is to prevent shoplifting. The machine knows the weights of all products in the store.

It doesn't stop people buying loose fruit and veg and entering it as the cheapest per Kg product. E.g. entering as Potatoes when they are Apples, Pears or Cherries.

Nandos food is Portuguese style Piri-piri (as we call it here in Portugal). The chicken symbol of Nandos is the Cockerel of Barcelos, a Portuguese legend. I saw a comment claiming that Pastel de nata is English. It’s most definitely not English at all. It’s a traditional Portuguese tart, very common here and loved by most Portuguese.
True. I started seeing the Pastel De Nata in England about four years ago. They are very expensive in Coffee houses (about £1.50 each), but in Tesco they do a pack of four for £2.00. I'm addicted! Never been to Nando's - reviews are mixed.
The Pastel de Nata are also very popular all over China, where they came via Macau. Very nice pastry.
Though Nando’s sells Portuguese style chicken, I believe it’s a South African restaurant chain.

I love grocery shoping in other countries, i dont know why, maybe because you consume but at the same time there is a lot of culture to be found in supermarkets silly as it may sound, but its about the things people consume daily.
The "bagging area" is a scale. They have a database of the masses of every item, based on its barcode. So, when you scan the item, you have to put it in the bagging area, so that the system can verify that you didn't try to pass something like an apple for a pineapple.
The larger Tesco supermarkets also sell, clothes, toys, TVs, headphones, smartphones, have a diner etc, much more Verity than the local smaller ones, usually can be cheaper than the them just depends on if you have a club card etc.
Poor Verity.
Interesting fact: Bird's custard was invented by Mr Bird, a pharmacist, whose wife was allergic to eggs.
I could watch you two shop all day. One decides on a purchase; the other comments upon it and the original purchaser puts the item back!
You bought the apple juice and you could have got a free sandwich or crisps as part of the meal deal for £3.50 (or £3 if you joined the Tesco club card scheme).
When we go to other countries we always hit the supermarkets, its so much fun checking out the different foods available and being brave enough to buy and try some.
I haven’t been to the UK for many years now so I haven’t done shopping there lately. I immediately spot all the things we have in Sweden’s stores 😂, I don’t remember they were that many from trips long ago but no there seems to be loads.
If this was British people on holiday - we'd definitely have a section where we looked at the alcohol before buying some each time lol

I rarely drink alcohol and my OH only has the odd drink now and then. He got out of the habit when he was driving for a living and only has the odd beer with his Sunday lunch.
There was an English farmer’s wife who used to go to the same complex and get so pie eyed the staff had to load her in to a luggage trolley and take her to her room every evening. She travelled out on the same flight as us and was already blotto before the flight boarded.
If you had looked further along the fridge there was a small strawberry milk. The UK is very strict on additives the USA adds way more additives. You keep going into tesco/Sainsburys locals to have the experience you seem to be looking for you would need a car to visit the main large shopping stores.
You don't need a car, i walk and cycle to big supermarkets all the time and this is from a suburb. Nearly all the big stores are also on bus routes.
From where they aare in york, a big morrisons/waitrose wasn't a very long walk away at Foss Islands.

We moved here 15 years ago and only had co-ops with very high prices nearby. Now we have a Lidl we use as a local shop, an Aldi, a Tesco extra and a large Sainsbury’s a short drive away.
Love to see you try the larger Sainburys and Tescos they would be a better comparison to your larger stores

@@mikeantonio3163 Something like 30% of it still is Walmart as the Issa brothers just took a controlling interest and didn't buy the entire company.
I shop at Asda, nothing has changed since the sale so if it looked like a UK Walmart before, it still does.
@@corleth2868 Saying that, didn't notice any real change when they did get taken over by Walmart. it seems that Walmart thought they could force US work ethics into the British workplace and of course failed and ran away.

For what it's worth, I think all of us mess up the self scan things from time to time. I've lost count of the number of times I've put things on the wrong side after scanning (it changes with every shop) and there's no worse words than "unexpected item in bagging area" and having to wait for a member of staff because it decided your chicken or whatever doesn't weigh what it's supposed to or there's no price in the system (Morrisons I'm looking at you and the 2 months someone had to come and manually put in the price!). If everything goes well they can be pretty quick and easy though.
I refuse to use self scanning on the basis it does people out of a job.

@@hatjodelka Well done for pointing out the obvious. Supermarkets operate on competitive margins and to keep costs low, u can't hire as much staff. Self-serves help to aid the cashiers and take pressure off them. Funny you think innovation takes away jobs lmao. As I said, boomer take.
What's funny to me is that I'm British but haven't been back to the UK since 2008, so I'm also looking at the items on the shelves and going ooh and aah at all the new stuff - you're so much more up to date on British snacks than I am :)
I used to work at tesco in the 1980's and it was a pile it high & sell it cheap operation...in the same space as Lidl is now. funny how things change!
I bought a bottle of red wine through a self service till and it called for assistance to check i was over 18. I’m sixty! You’d think the supermarket’s machines could read my crows feet…. They’re not so different to barcodes🤣🤣
I was surprised when the machine wanted an age verification for buying a redbull (this was last year, as a student in my mid-20s who was less health-conscious compared to today, by the way).
When comparing prices did you remember that tax is included?

@@robertgriffith8857 There is tax on confectionary. And there is talk of bringing in a sugar tax for health reasons. That might cover some biscuits, donuts,etc.
luxury foods are subject to a 20% tax. Essential food is tax free. Luxury food tends to be chocolate, sweets etc. However cake which you would think is a luxury item is vat free as are biscuits but they turn into a luxury if they have chocolate on top. It's a little complicated but, just buy what you want / can afford.

@@girlsdrinkfeck I was going to say the very same. Extremely over priced. Small portions and for all the hype, very Bland and basic quality. Plus long waiting time to be served. (Except 30+ mins) even when half empty. Not recommended. Visited a branch during a trip to Chester, never again.

The "bagging area" is basically a weighing machine - it checks that the weight of the item matches the identity from the barcode, to try to prevent fraud by scanning a cheap item when you're actually taking a more expensive one. That's why it throws up an error if you don't put the item you've just scanned into the bagging area.

Those self checkout machines weigh the goods as you put them in the out area and cross-checks against the expected weight of the barcoded item.
Incidentally, all those small branches, like Tesco Express and Sainsbury Local are essentially local convenience stores and the prices are often a bit higher and the choice considerably less than in one of the main branches which might be 10-20 times larger.

2:12 Nando's are a Portuguese-style restaurant chain that originated in South Africa (even though lots of people seem to think they're British).

Nando’s is South African out of Mozambique/Portuguese style food (a neighbouring country to South Africa), its staple meat dishes are all chicken, with varying levels of chilli mild to hot. It’s not Indian.
Those Tesco express self checkouts take some getting used to 😅 I made the same mistake you did with the sensors.
I always go into local stores when I'm on holiday abroad to see what they sell. Irn Bru is disgustingly sweet! If I use the self serve check out, it never works, and usually have to get the assistant to sort me out.

The people at check out also work the shelves and floor checkout is just a shift you can be asigned to they dont lose their job to the machine checkouts they just get sent to stack shelved

i saw you looked at the pasta de nata, it's a portuguese sweet pastry and its closest comparison is the custard tart and is very good especially with a light dusting of canela (cinnamon}

There's a scale in the bagging area so that the machine knows what's been scanned and what isn't right. When you scanned your shopping and it registered no weight in the bagging area it asked for assistance.

*Never* shop at Tesco without a clubcard or you're paying extra on everything just for the sake of it. Nobody shops there without one.

At 6:01 those two metal hooks are for you to hang a bag. You can scan and pack at the same time if the bag is touching the bagging area. Not everyone knows this.

Tesco recently was the third largest retailer in the world after Wal-Mart and Home Depot. They have stores all over the world except for North America. Carrefour of France is similarly sized.
I found shopping and using the self service checkout in Walmart in Colorado exactly the same as in the UK

Chocolate wise, Lindt is fantastic, I've been told it's much better in Europe than the US (by people from US). In Sainsbury's and Waitrose you can buy Tony Chocolonely, Dutch company, so good. Also, you should a Pasteis de Nata, they are Portuguese custard tarts, they were in the bakery section. You should see if there is a bus out to your nearest Tesco Extra, much bigger range of everything. M&S and Waitrose are the high end supermarkets, quality is generally better but more expensive.
Charbonel et Walker is fantastic chocolate ,lindt is good. You have to search for C&W. So worth it.
Tesco meal deals are £3.50 or £3 with a club card. But even at £3.50 you can't go wrong. I get prawn mayo sandwiches, a starbucks iced latte and either crisps (chips) or a candy bar.
I've not lived in UK since 2011 so it was shocking for me to see how prices have gone up, especially things like malt loaf that was always quite cheap. I prefer to be served by a human employee as it helps them to keep their jobs.
The size of a Soreen Malt Loaf has been seriously reduced recently. Not much larger than a Mars Bar from the old days (also improved to make it easier to carry).
The shop is an Express- so much more expensive than regular Tesco or other discount store.
The "bagging area" are scales, and they weigh the items you put down to make sure they match the the item description for the bar code you scanned. This is incase a staff member registered it as the wrong item in the system.
"Pastel de nata" is a typical Portuguese custard cake, that has gradually made its way into the UK market.😉

That started a hot debate! Which came first the Pastel de Nata or the Custard Tart.... Have to say the Portuguese brought tea drinking over in the 17th c so we may well have pinched their custard tarts too... Who knows.
I remember eating egg custard tarts in the UK back in the early 50s, they have been around for a long time.

I agree, the assistant seemed quite annoyed and lacking patience. Considering that's his job and he must experience that a lot you would think he'd be used to it and it wouldn't bother him by now.
tesco customer service is terrible in my opinion. another reason why i don't shop there any more.
I spoke to a kid in Morrisons about the reduced price stickers, and he said they had a problem with people peeling them off and sticking them on something else. I said, "Really?" He said, "All the time!" It's a way more serious charge than theft as well because an intent inconsistent with impulsiveness. Some things are *SO* expensive in the US. Aldi/Lidl sell an 800g wholemeal loaf for 36p/43 cents. US bread is four or five times the price, and worse. I pay £2.59 for 7.5kg of potatoes. I know a Brit of Native American heritage who goes to the US every summer. She's staggered by how expensive a lot of basic food is.

@@seanhopton. This seems the opposite of my experience in the 1990s but then the pound was around $2. Also the big supermarkets in UK have really competed on price since then.

In the pecking order of supermarket brands from budget to up-market/expensive I’d say; Lidl, Aldi, Iceland, ASDA, Morrisons, Co-op, Tesco, Sainsburys, Marks & Spencer, then Waitrose. There are probably others, but those are the ones that come to mind. For nostalgia, a couple of cheap ones that I don’t think are around any more are Netto, and Kwik-Save.
Tesco Express and Sainsbury's Local are City / town centre stores. The big stores are usually away from Town centres and the super stores are very similar to the likes of Publix and Vons in the US in terms of size.
In a big supermarket the cheese is like £2-£3 so its definitely alot cheaper then America and it's way higher quality
The problem is it does not fit the bread perfectly and has a flavour. There are laws in the US to prevent decent cheese. Land of the free - as long as you aren't a cheesemaker.

Make sure you check out a Waitrose, the best quality chain in UK. Marks & Spencer also good for ready to eat products.

Not sure what time you visited this shop but it does say it closes at 11PM so perhaps you could've gone later. Pre covid many Tescos were open 24hrs 6 days per week with shorter opening on Sunday, our local Big Tesco was. Currently the Tesco web site says it closes at midnight but is already closed at 8PM. I suspect their either back to 24 hrs or close at midnight.
I think Poundland is more like Dollar General.
As a rule of thumb any supermarket chain with anything other than just the parent company, i.e. Tesco in the title means it is a "corner shop" type of stockist, and as been said it is possibly likely to cost more than in the main store.
Regarding bottled water... "A fool and his money are easily parted"!

Tried 3 today, each time they didn't work, possibly my fault but assistant meant to help you leaning against boxes looking other way. Lifes too short, I've never been able to use them, something always goes wrong or i get stuck on some menu and help always wandering off somewhere.

There is a Tesco Megastore near me.. I am not sure its actually classed as a "Megastore" it's just what we call it when we are referring to a location.. "Near the Mega Tesco"..
Its cheaper and about 80-120 times more floor space than a Tesco Express.
And even the stuff like Coke, is stacked about 12ft high..
Still nothing compared to the 24ft high racking shelves they have at Costco.. but still pretty high.
Haha don't even think about you eating chocolate, I'm amazed how strict and conscious you guys and a lot of people are with what they eat. I'll eat chocolate bars, chocolate milk, cakes throughout the day without even giving it a second thought. Well until I see how other people react to these kinds of food and then it gets me thinking.

Also, those self scan machines work by weight, so that's why you have to put your scanned items onto the thing; it's supposed to recognise if you're trying to pinch anything (hence the immortal line "unexpected item in bagging area - remove this item before continuing" 😀).
I have a friend who works in Tesco, she went there for two weeks and has now worked there for over 40 years, they do let her go home when she is finished at the end of her shift.
The trouble with the supermarket express stores they just sell junk food, 3 aisles junk, 1 aisle fruit veg and fridge for more junk food and milk!
Tesco express is pretty much just a large 7-11. Not a supermarket you would use for your weekly shop.
Totally should have gone to at least one Tesco Extra, and one ASDA Walmart Supercenter but would have needed a car most likely. Why you didn't pay and book your car from America, and get a mid sized automatic with satnav, I don't know. It is much cheaper to book UK hire cars from America in advance.

It seems so weird watching someone looking at 'regular stuff' (regular to me) and finding it so different and interesting. x)
Yea obviously we have supermarkets as most places in the world do but you guys do have different items and ways about doing every day things.
Have you guys tried an Aldi or Lidl? As other commenters have pointed out, you keep visiting the 'local' branches of larger supermarkets, which isn't a very good representation, though the "big" Tescos and even the Sainsbury's are a fair walk from the city centre, Sainsbury's perhaps is more accessible if you go along the walls towards it. Foss Islands isn't too far, which houses a Lidl, and a Morrisons which I've been told more closely resembles some American supermarkets with its deli counters etc.
A trip to Asda (Walmart owned) would have been a really different experience!
The reason I think we sell less glass bottles is because a lot of the times they were used as weapons on other people
Nando's isn't Indian, it's a South African chain doing Afro-Portuguese style food.

Hello Ethan and Angela. I was brought up in area without a Tesco, but discovered them at university. They are everywhere in UK now.
I spotted yellow reduced stickers and also Seabrook crisps that I had previously commented about, the latter being from Bradford, like me.
Seabrook crisps are great but the packs are little lighter than most. I am a blood donor and after a session I have a drink and some biscuits, but I always get a pack of Seabrook's ready salted and take them home to put them on a salad sarnie.
@@anthonyscott4270 I was surprised at ready salted. After growing up with the flavour of the varieties, other crisps seemed bland. I suppose your choice shows the crisps taste better too. Having only known them as what crisps were when Ethan and Angela's son's age, I would say that though.

I drive for Tesco delivering shopping. As people are saying go to the bigger stores not the express ect.
I find your videos 'so familiar', but in the other direction. I fly a lot of longhaul (for a living) and often find myself in stores in The States - it's all so familiar, yet different at the same time. Better yet though is Japan, or South Korea - half the time, I haven't a clue what I'm buying, and sometimes will bring unknown stuff home, deliberately, so my family can try it.
When you've finished in the UK, you should really move out of your comfort zone and head to SE Asia - we'll tag along for the ride! What could possibly go wrong! 😂👍
To be fair, that self scan is weird (to me anyway, I've not seen that type).
It's normally 'place basket on left, scan, then place on right', or the other way 'round (there can be both 'left to right' and 'right to left' in one store).

You should have hunted down Tesco Extra (or Big Tesco as British people like to call it). It's enormous.
There isn't much difference between all the major stores. Sometimes one store will have a promotion where 1 thing is much cheaper than the others, but those other will often have promotions of their own selling a different item much cheaper. I guess if you wanted to you could go to every store chain and buy the cheapest items from each but the time, effort and fuel costs make it uneconomical. I'm sure if you just used one store the prices will even out to be like the others over a year.
Before I moved to this town I used to shop at a store called Morrisons. I'd spend about £40 a week on food items, and essentials like dish soap and toilet rolls. Bigger tesco's have a handheld zapper to scan barcodes as you go which in theory makes things faster at the checkout as you can bring a folding crate in with you, pack as you shop then just pop it into the boot of the car. In practice you get selected for a random check almost every single time you go and buy stuff.
If you want some nice chocolate to take back with you find an Aldi, much better than cadburys and some good flavour combos like the chilli dark chocolate which is comparable to lindt.

I did exactly the same thing when I was in my Sainsbury's Supermarket earlier paying for a couple of items. They changed the till so the bagging and basket area was on the opposite sides from where they were normally.
We used to do fizzy drinks and water in glass bottles but we stopped doing it for some reason I guess we've got to catch back up with the USA because it makes so much sense.
I’m so old I remember taking glass pop bottles back to the corner shop for a few pennies.
One thing I notice about McCoy's crisps, is no matter where you shop Tesco, Sainsbury's, Or even Asda....you cannot buy any of McCoy's 'plain' flavour on their own...It's drives me nuts.
