Gary effin Richrath! Gone too soon. Loved his playing. He had a style all his own. Instantly recognizable. He could play 5 notes and you knew it was him. Finding your own style/sound as a rock guitarist is not an easy thing to do. He accomplished that! Miss him. “Ain’t nobody who talks with his guitar like Gary does!”
I was able to see REO so many times back in the 70s I lost count. However, one thing always comes to mind when I see older videos of them in concert. I celebrate the times Gary was able to feel the love and admiration of all those fans. He was one hell of an accomplished guitarist that had soul and power in his playing. His was a style that few have ever attained and it was NOT an ordinary style. In fact it was an unorthodox method that was more akin to someone that taught then selves to play. At any rate, any of these old videos makes me smile and shed a tear.
Damn…watching Richrath tear it up like only he could is so awesome. Most of you watching this have no idea who he was (except for us REO fans). At his peak here, he was on fire and had it all…peerless talent, looks, charisma…but so tragic and sad with his demise. What could have been…but like so many stories in our music biz, addiction won out. So sad.
Yes ,I am aware of who Gary Richrath was and is , one thing Gary is , and you and I both know , for him(Gary) was a top 25 guitar player of all time, He makes the list and then you throw in ,self taught and that he didn't use effects ,has even the very very best scratching their heads in amazement of his sound and tone that everyone loves
REO'S live "you get what you you play for" my first rock album... my sister gave it to me for Christmas 1977. That began a 46 year love affair. This band is my all time favorite. I wish Gary had never left, although I understand why. Every time I saw them live, it was always eyes glued to Gary. The band without him, although good, was never the same.
I met Gary in a mall a few hours before a show they were playing in Johnson City Tennessee in the mid 1980’s. He was shopping with his wife and I was with a girlfriend wasting time at the mall like most 80’s teens. Super nice man, and a monster on guitar. I agree with all of the folks in this post. A talent beyond measure. Rock on Gary, rock on!
Saw REO at the start of their downturn, sometimes in the 90s, at the "old" Charlotte Coliseum, in Charlotte NC. It was an 8500 seat arena, and about 1200 people showed up, if that many. REO came out, rocked the opening song. Then Kevin asked to bring up the house lights, and looked at the crowd, all of whom were standing on the floor around the stage. You could see on his face he was not thrilled with the size of the audience. It would have been EASY to mail in that show, do the hits, and get on the bus. Instead, he said "Hey, it's a comfortable crowd, how bout we have some fun?" And they proceeded to play for 3 hours, in the best show I've ever seen. Songs I had literally never heard, they played. Have great respect for them for giving those people a show. Pure class.
I've read a lot of what has been written about REO but this is the first time I was brought to tears. What you wrote is the best I've ever read. I understand a little better now why this band had the efficiency of a Mercedes Benz.

Gary Ritchrath from Peoria Il tearing it up as always!
First MTV concert ever. Two nights at McNichols arena. And me and my friends were there. 14th row center. One of the best concerts I ever went to.
I Seen Reo speedwagon 4 times from 1978 till 1987 Just to watch Gary play that guitar to me was just unbelievable When Gary Left REO I Left REO the man needs to be in Rock and roll hall of fame With or without REO...
RICHRATH!!! Enough said.
I was riding my Schwinn chopper when this song came out!
Love the footage of RICHRATH working that neck on that Gibson Les Paul, man, he was the best
Rock n roll ruled Colorado in the 70's and 80's. Glad I grew up there away from the pop and disco of the coasts.
I seen REO Speedwagon at the California music festival in L.A. in 1978 great band ! 🤘😁🤘
Good ole REO. Nothing like them. Saw this tour at 21 yrs old.
Gary made it look so easy! RIP brother.
What great chords/arrangements in this song. Love this 🎸
Awesome! The classic lineup!
Sophomore year. Such memories. Girls, class and REO. Many, these guys were huge in the 80's.
What a trip, My best friend and I were at this concert.
Gary Richrath has long been the most underrated guitarist is Rock'n'Roll. Absolute GOD.
This band was so underrated. To me I believe they were on of the best ever!!!!
REO SW Was not underrated by any means.
@@HighSpeedNoDragYeah they are they don’t even play this song on the radio anymore. The only ones they ever play from reo are take it on the run, keep on loving u, and can’t fight this feeling.
@@JJ4848 Yes and depends on the radio station and format. Better days back then, amen.
you got that right, sure got that right
He had the same smile that Eddie Van Halen did it was infectious and it was just getting them off- playing the guitar it's all about the fans giving back man doing what you love will always make you smile
Seen them in 1984 in illinois.me and my buddy randall perchelli.in chicago.gary was the best for sure.
I saw many great shows at McNichols. Mile High Stadium was just across the street. Those were the days!
Sunday Jam #2 Denver Colorado 1979 80,000 stoners, Colorado Sunday Jam #2.
This concert line up included The Rockets, UFO, The Cars, Heart, and Ted Nugent!
🔥 REO 🔥 live in the Miami orange 🍊 bowl stadium 1982 .
Keyboard solo = nailed.
Look up "rock 'n' roll guitarist" in the dictionary and I swear there's a picture of Gary Richrath. How can you not love this guy and the way he plays
Gary Could turn A Pop Song into Hard Rock in Seconds 🎸
I was on that tour as young lighting guy Gary always made it look so effortless and one of the most infectious Smiles I've seen since Eddie Van Halen
They were on fire on this tour. My sister was at this show. I was in 8th grade at North Middle and went to Aurora Central but had a bunch of friends that went to Gateway.
Not sure why everybody is so stunned. If you grew up in the 70s and 80s everybody played their instruments and sang. Well most you know accept Milli Vanilli excetera. Its funny how everybody Praises bands for how great they sound live, but that's what you paid for back then and that's what you expected. More than anything 40 years later I look back and think wow. I got to see some of the best musicians on the planet. Thanks to all of the great bands that came to play those nights
Pure awesome rock, from a great bunch of musicians. If Rickrath had been able to cut back to only one gallon of whiskey a day they might have rocked on, but "it is what it is"!!
0:30. Allen Gratzer doing the Bo Diddley beat. Richrath was packing the power of the Les Paul.
Oh FFS!!! I JUST STUMBLED ON THIS 😅 My first concert ever!! 4/2/81 McNichols Arena. I had no idea there was footage of this !!!! This was the opening song i think.
That was my very first concert. Thanks for posting.
