  • The First Finnish VHS version of Robocop was released in 1988 at the height of video violence hysteria and in the middle of confusion what is the new video law exactly. The Finnish board of Film Classification did a real hack job on this film, cutting away 10 minutes and 48 seconds of violent imagery! In this video you will see how it was cut!
    PART VHS, PART MOVIE, ALL CUT.

    Yes, Video Butchery! With our history of FBFC here, there would be a lot of "great" releases to cover. Especially the martial art movies of the 80's, like Seagal, Van Damme etc. They usually have the most messed up cuts rythmically.

      @VideoTalkVideospace  7 месяцев назад +2

      Van Damme was perhaps the most hated person by the FBFC!

    I burst out laughing when Dick Jones fell through the window at the first shot. One correction though: Murphy's wife only says "I love you" at the scene where Robocop goes back to their house.

      I was going to say this too abuot the "I love you", she says it only on the scene where he goes back to his home as robocop :).

    If you think that the Finnish tape was bad, check out the old German FSK16 tape that's also missing a lot of footage. But thankfully nowadays, you can enjoy RoboCop fully uncut even in the unrated version on German free TV. Times have changed.

    Bloodsport was also badly cut, and The Punisher. I was lucky to own foreign version of Punisher, completely uncut. Still own it. Too bad I dont own VHS player anymore.

      Also Evil Dead was one of to suffer the massive cuts!

    The whole video censorship era was quite mad here in Finland. I remember The Evil Dead was also cut for nearly 12 minutes which was amazing considering the movie was less than 86 minutes in its uncut form.
    I can't even remember how many different cut versions I saw of RoboCop on various VHS tapes before I got hold of the "uncut" import version, being the R-rated theatrical cut at the time. Throughout the years finally saw the director's cut at one point and much much later Arrow's restoration and eventually leading to their beautiful 4K release.

      Bloodsport and Evil Dead indeed got it even worse than RoboCop!

      @@VideoTalkVideospace Evil Dead was cut by Renny Harlin? Or was there many versions?

    • @jyrilehtinen_aka_grimreaper
      @jyrilehtinen_aka_grimreaper 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@TonyZi What? Renny had nothing to do with the cuts of Evil Dead. He wasn't even in the movie business at that exact time when Evil Dead came out here, he was a 20-something hosting a few TV shows for teenagers on national TV. About a year later he ended up working in a production company and from there on he really started his career.
      On video here I only know of that one ~12min cut of The Evil Dead, all the violence and even slightly gruesome scenes cut.

    • @TonyZi
      @TonyZi 7 месяцев назад

      @@jyrilehtinen_aka_grimreaper you are probably right but I do have a strange memory that Renny did make a cut version of some movie.

    • @jyrilehtinen_aka_grimreaper
      @jyrilehtinen_aka_grimreaper 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@TonyZi I don't recall Renny ever cutting anyone else's but his own movies and usually just to achieve an R-rating like Cliffhanger, Die Hard 2 or the horrible Exorcist prequel Exorcist: The Beginning which all were too bloody in their original form so the bloodiest bits had to be cut.

    This is great! Do more please. Growing up in the U.S., a lot of us kids thought TV censorship was laughable and silly. We thought no one else in the world over-reacted the way scared conservative 80s parents in the U.S. did. I was surprised to find out years later how much worse some countries were, censoring video and theatrical releases and even arresting people who sold and owned uncut versions of movies. That was just unfathomable to me (except for rare cases of snuff films & people doing truly awful and illegal things on video.)

    • @VideoTalkVideospace
      @VideoTalkVideospace  7 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks! On the plus side, in Finland, only distributing these films on video was prohibited. You might get a fine for distributing a film that was not sanctioned by the Finnish Board of Film Classifications or was banned. Basically this prevented nothing, the grey market was booming. Nobody went to jail for that like in Great Britain.
      Other badly cut tapes were Bloodsport, Evil Dead, The Hidden, Nightmare on Elm Street 3 & 4, Alone in the Dark, which I have an example here (in the end) ruclips.net/video/HqQT7sdQjG0/видео.html

    Minä en ymmärtänyt tuolloin enkä ymmärrä vieläkään. Mikä helvetin logiikka oli sensuroida lapsilta kiellettyjä elokuvia lapsille sopiviksi. Tuo lakimuutos aiheutti ainakin minulle sen, että oli ihan pakko vuokrata kaikki k-18 leffat, ennenkuin sensuuri pilaa ne täysin.

    One possibility for this kind of censoring of RoboCop could be that RoboCop must have fascinated a lot kids of the 80's...I know because I was one of those kids. I watched the rated cut but at least it was uncensored version recorded from Mtv3 I think. Good times.

    😂And just when i thought my first view of this was bad. No bloody fucking way. Saw this on finnish Mtv3(first commercial channel) on their very first steps, maybe 90-91. Asked my parents to tape from broadcast and for my wonder they did. Ok for the first time they stayed and watched the film with me just in case, switch is nice don't get me wrong. I guess I was six years old.
    And after this I guess I saw theatrical release, thank's god(or who ever)We'll theatrical cut was after many years, offcourse same as toilet paper, when saw directors cut, 🤔if I remember it right it was shown and premiered at Tv4 on 2000-2001. After that there is just directors cut😆 I love this movie since I saw it first time and it is still one of the greatest, no explonations needed Videospace told them allready.
    But damn I'm happy I didn't saw this pile of ****on my first time. Even thoug' it might been possible😅
