Thanks for the upload. How wonderful to see the late, great Bamber Gascoigne again. He was a very special person. RIP.

This is my all-time favourite quiz show from Granada TV in 1984, and I do miss Bamber Gascoigne so much and he`s still the best quizmaster, and I remember this, when broadcast on Tuesday in November 1984 at 3:00 pm, as far as I remember when I was 17.

A very accurate memory. There was some dispute between Granada and LWT, which meant the series was not shown in every ITV region. The programme was recorded in April, 1984.

Bamber Gascoigne was so polite and didn't bite your head off had you got wrong answer

Have watched a great many UC episodes and know of no quizmaster who bites anyone's head off for a wrong answer.

@@castelodeossos3947 Paxman to be honest was a great newsreader to me as opposed to on UC. However be different without him

Thank you for publishing this, Philip. I have (most of) the three first round matches on a VHS tape and will see if I can manage to upload them.

I do have the other games in digital form, Conrad, and I will get round to uploading them at some stage. Interesting to see the appeal of these old recordings.

Bamber was the definitive presenter of this show. His relaxed style just can't be replicated by anyone else. I really enjoyed watching UC then.

Wow - great to see the great late (and tragically handsome) Mick Imlah. Sadly missed. The questions are much harder than todays'. I'd forgotten how poshly Magdalen students (or at least some of them) spoke. :-) And how nicely they dressed. I remember Philip Beagon!

😂 I don't recall ever seeing Ron around college. He looked in all the programmes as if he had just woken up. But he was very good. I was impressed then, and still am now by the way he remembered Cellini

Or do you mean left as we sit? Conrad certainly fitted the bill too. For someone reading chemistry his knowledge of English Literature was remarkable. It one episode he corrects the deliberate mistake in the last two lines of Milton's Lycidas. Were he on the programme today he would be a media star.

Another Bamber/Paxman comparison. At 1:30 when Magdalen who gets the full starter question but aren't allowed to confer, Bamber politely told them not to. With Paxman he would have displeasingly put a stop to it, wouldn't have been allowed them to answer & bollocked them.

bit disappointed he allowed them a second go at a starter answer "Local Defence Force" - oh no, "Volunteers"

It's amazing how popular this show has become in the UK. While the format originated in the US as "College Bowl" and had a decent run on television, it didn't last as long. There were a couple of summer seasons produced in recent years though.

I have only just found out that this is on RUclips. I do have tape but haven't bothered uploading it for obvious reasons. What I do remember is being quite nervous about jumping in too early and maybe we could could have got at least a few more points if we hadn't been so cautious. That Black Beauty question early on was a bummer because I definitely knew the answer to that !

    • @philipbeagon1984

Black Beauty was the first question and I think everyone was nervous. At least you beat me to the buzzer on Dacia/Romania, something that still irks me.🙂

Interesting that they have changed the rules in (at least) two ways. Penalties are given as points to the other team, and interrupting a music question is a penalty.

    1. Dun Eidann - "Dun" does actually mean fort, not fortress.
    2. The picture question for Australian cities was sneaky! Most would have said Melbourne too.
