On our way back from two weeks in Africa, we had an opportunity to fly the continent's largest carrier, Ethiopian Airlines! We flew from Addis Ababa to Washington DC (IAD) over 17 hours in business class - including a stopover in Rome, Italy. This was in Ethiopian Airlines new 787 product which is very new! It was an incredible experience and we think Ethiopian is incredibly underrated! The seats, food, and staff were all amazing!

The westbound flights out of Addis Abbaba to North America need to make a fuel stop for two reasons. One, is that ADD is a high altitude airport and the air is less dense. Therefore aircraft must use more runway to become airborne and they cannot take a full load of fuel because the weight of a plane fully loaded with fuel cannot become airborne at that air density. And two, when flying westbound, you are flying against the jetstream and it’s a longer flight time and consumes more fuel. So the flights to North America from ADD must stop in Europe to refuel.
The Eastbound flights on the same route can complete the journey nonstop because they are not flying from high altitude airports and they are flying with the jetstream, not against it.
I have flown Ethiopian often in my African travels and they have become a favorite airline of mine.
Glad you had a nice flight

Oh that makes sense! We had not considered the elevation as a factor. Thanks for following up!

Amazing video! You’re lucky, I have tried upgrading to business class on 2 different occasions, flying the same route as you, but it was fully booked. I’m glad it did not disappoint you. Stay blessed!

Loved the presention! Ethiopian's old cloud 9 configuration is definitely out of date and will be retrofitted with new cabins next year. The new ones (delivered 2019 onwards) seem to have the same layout as in this video. All flights to the Americas need technical stopover at Rome due to Bole airport being at a much higher altitude, affecting max takeoff weight. Return flights are all nonstop. You should have been a bit adveturous and tried more of the traditional food.

Thank you!! Ahh that makes sense on the elevation at takeoff, glad someone followed up for us!
Yes, you're right, we definitely missed on the food! We always say it but are terrible on following through. Reason to go do it again!

Beautiful flight review. The inflight service looks top notch. You should have tried the Ethiopian cuisine, Ethiopian Airlines offers both Ethiopian and international dish in business class aka cloud 9.

We actually just had a layover there but have heard nothing but good things! We understand it to be a safe location to travel as long as you practice precautions you would in any large city
