As a general rule of thumb for any new renters who are seeing this video:
    1. Always take a lot of pictures of every area of your living space BEFORE moving anything in. Use flash and a lot of angles. There really is no such thing as too many photos, especially if you notice anything like stains, scuffs, uneven surfaces, possible water damage or mold...
    2. Email all of those pictures to yourself. This will provide an indisputable timestamp if you ever have to consult a lawyer. If you notice any issues, especially functional issues (a closet door has a broken hinge, etc.) send those images to your landlord with some basic questions. ("Hey landlord, I noticed this door is broken. How should I go about getting that addressed?") If you can get some record of their acknowledgement for those initial move in photos, this is even better for your case.
    3. If your lease is up, make sure you get everything moved out on time and take your own photos of how you left things. Email these to yourself as well. Make sure you double check every cabinet and drawer and sweep/vacuum the floor to avoid getting flagged for late move out.
    4. Finally, if a landlord attempts to deny your security deposit or charges you for things you didn't cause (unfortunately very common because it lets them improve the property out of someone else's pocket) CONSULT A LAWYER. Many will be willing to do a brief consultation on your case for free, and if you are low income many offices have resources or a sliding scale of fees to help you out. Seriously, depending on your state and it's renters laws, you could get 2-3 times your initial deposit back if your landlord is found in the wrong. Sucky landlords bet on the fact that most tenants won't bother pursuing civil damages when they do sketchy stuff like this.
Hope this saves someone else from a sucky situation down the line.

A lawyer is probably not even worth it. You can file yourself for failure to return deposit, it happens all the time, the process is fairly simple and many places have a fine for not returning it, making landlords very eager to do so if you show them the proof that you didn't cause the damage. Just look it up and remind them of the fine in your area, it usually works.

Take pics and videos of EVERY SQUARE INCH of the place you're moving in. And that can change depending on what they know you have when you sign the lease. For example, if they know, for a fact that I own a colony of 100 rats, or if I have 10 children when I sign the lease that the normal wear and tear for 10 children is more than renting to someone with zero kids, for example, and it usually works this way in courts as well.

Btw for advice, my aunt works with renting out houses and such, for a company, and they take pictures through the house before you move in and after, so if the renters do make damages to the house, they have proof. Also makes it so where homeowners can't blame you for any pervious damages. So if they say to you "Look for any problems in their house and write it down." Take pictures of all the rooms and damaged you see, go through the whole house.

Hey just a tip about vans. I’m an Amazon delivery dispatcher and we rent vans of all different manufacturers. The transits are fine if you never plan to take it to a rural area. I recommend the Dodge ProMasters. They have sharper turn radius’s and do way better in rural areas where the transits tires will spin in place more often. We’ve had home owners call and demand we repair their driveway because a transit had to floor it to get up to the house.
