CNBC's Kate Rogers joins 'Squawk on the Street' to report on Starbucks as the coffee giant has unveiled a new store design focused on accessibility and inclusion.
Customer: “Make your stores warm, special, and inviting… for us to gather and spend $$$ on your coffee” Starbucks: “We think ‘Hospital Waiting Room’ is what we’re going with…”
ironically, Starbucks is actually opened right beside hospitals in certain Asian countries. Maybe they want to "blend in" with the new hospital waiting look?
I’m not a SBUX fan, but yeah, I remember the old days in the early 2000s when the stores where very cozy with warm colors/lights and the music was soft.
@@sak_5 I agree. I think there used to be a Starbucks music channel on Sirius XM. Now when I go to Starbucks, the music is blaring on a channel which might be one of the worker's favorite, but not mine.
Freaking modern design strikes again! Color is not allowed, and everything must be black, white, and stainless steel. All that's missing is a giant clock and words on the wall, like "coffee" and "gather". I guess if people are staring down at their phones all day, it won't make a difference..
That design kind of looks like an office building cafeteria. The seating table at 0:10 looks like what you see in a pre-school, where the kids are painting or playing with toys together. Is that what customers want? I always thought a coffee shop is with darker colors, with a warm and coziness, where people can relax and chat. This has the look and feel of the breakfast buffet at the Holiday Inn Express. Those chairs must have all the comfort of being strapped into the electric chair, just before they turn on the juice.
I agree with you and really miss the cozy Starbucks vibes from the late 90s. I think it's the 90/10 rule - don't spend 90% of your time and resources on 10% of your customers. I worked as a consultant on the mobile order feature nearly 10 years ago and our research showed that fewer than 4% of regular Starbucks customers ranked "a comfortable place to work and/or socialize" as a priority when visiting a store. Starbucks told us that in 2000 it was a priority for nearly 7 in 10 of their customers. It went from 70% to 4% in about 15 years.
So many New York locations (7th Street in Williamsburg, for example) have made it completely uncomfortable inside with a lack of furniture, either too low or too high seating and tables, like they don't actually want you to stay inside.

They're going to this model because they don't want people hanging out in the café. They want you to take your drink and leave. They're trying to keep up with Dutch Bros. Starbucks became popular for being a "3rd space" away from home or work, where you could hang out and meet people.
