- Hippos are pretty cute with their rotund bodies, short stubby legs and sly smirks. But if you happen upon one, beware. They're one of the most fearsome animals in the world. Hippos may seem harmless, but they're far from it. In Africa, hippos kill around 500 people a year, making them twice as deadly as lions. They have a bite force of up to 12,600 kPa (1,827 psi). A hippo could sever a person in two as easily as we can snap a chocolate bar.
So what makes these seemingly gentle giants so deadly? What do they eat?
And why is their poop so destructive?

I live in South Africa so i have heard stories of hippos a lot, my grandfather wrote a book (I remember when, A lifetime with a game ranger) so that's where i find most of the stories

The environment in South America is very welcoming to hippos, they have even taken over local towns in the area in Columbia. There are no predators, they dont move away from cars so calmly walk down streets and highways.
There is a sterilization programme in place to control the wild population, I think the estimate they have given here on the amount in the wild is far too low.

They are not herbivores. They will eat meat, including cannibalism.
If memory serves a hippo is monogamous, they also only rear one young at a time, meaning if two are born one will be killed.
No, they are herbivores. Are humans considered cannibals because some minute percentage practice it on rare occasions? And just because most herbivores will eat animal protein on rare occasions doesn't mean they aren't herbivores. Hippos eating meat is considered abnormal behavior, and likely an act of desperation for nutrients during times of scarcity.

I have never thought of hippos as cute, and I have had a few terrifying hippo dreams. I've only seen them in person at zoos -- and I dont care to have any closer contact with them. Their mouths are the stuff of nightmares.

Aside from the units, I always thought force to be more appropriate for bite strength than pressure, which, for a given jaw strength, would vary widely depending on the area considered. Most animals bite strength, measured in PSI or kPA, could exceed their tooth strength, if they bit a ball bearing, or any small hard thing....the force, without considering area, seems more relevant. Pounds, or Newtons, if you insist.

Good question. It's because teeth and are not evenly distributed and jaw muscles are all the way in the back. In other words, if measured in force, an animal bites strength greatly varies on where in the mouth the object is positioned.
@@studentloans2488 Variance due to random factors usually are not a problem. A car's engine output varies with speed, load etc. but it's also reliably measured under standardized test conditions. Surely there's a way to fit a precision dynamometer into a hippo's mouth. "Sir, give me your best bite..." 😉

At almost 4 tons, the (dual) extant White Rhinoceros species only ranks behind the (triple) extant Elephant species as the largest land animal(s) on Earth. Hippos rank “third” on this list.

that was good, but we dont understand why theor poop is so toxic - does it concentrate phosphorus (limiting nutrient for algae/plants) ? This would be true of any large animal who pooped in water (eg human poop especially nutrient rich)
