Why can’t we get music like this anymore? No digital compression, wide range of instruments, talented vocals. This is talent right here, not a manufactured musical product.
We can no longer get quality music like this on the pop music scene because record companies are now more interested in marketing images and gimmicks instead of talented music artists. I used to be a radio announcer, but I don't think I could work for a contemporary music station in this day and age.

We can’t get music like this because it costs too much money. Why have a band when you can assemble songs with samples and a computer?
Time to do a concert? Just hire some studio musicians and boom, you have your band.
Look on the credits of any Pop song. You usually have 5-7 writers! Songs used to be written by one or two people. You can bet that everyone in the studio will get a writer credit.
Edit: I am not happy about the way of music today.
It was always Sergio Mended band but Joe Pizzulo made it world class.
He was born in Youngstown, Ohio..Just over the PA border from where I am from...Good for the local kid..

I will never understand HOW this song got shafted so badly on the charts (peaking at #29 on Billboard). Catchy tune, clever lyrics, terrific vocals -- what does a song have to do to get respect? And oldies stations ignore it, too.
IMHO, the best song ever to come from Sergio Mendes. It really deserves a better fate.

Part of it was that they did not put out a video....
People who can identify with the time the song came out I'm sure gave this song a thumbs up. Don't you relate to songs that bring you back to good times? I'm sure you do. If you don't, then you need to check your pulse.

What a great groove. Michael McDonald would be proud of the hard hitting harmonies "AND YOU'RE WHERE you have to be tonight" ... Doobies were a huge influence in the hooks of this song. Go Sergio !!

Why oh why didn't the song get the recognition that it deserves. A very underrated song This should have went number one.
so many of us who loved the song always question how this didn't at least hit the top 10! This is the type of song in the mid 80s that would hit #5 or 6. It feels like a #1 smash, so perhaps it didn't have payola backing it, if that was still a thing back in the mid 80s. Also, Sergio confused us all with who sang it, by just putting his name on the single. At least he had her mention his name here!

Exactly my thoughts. The songs expires 1980s from all over it! I'm 23, so sadly I'm stuck with 2010s pop "musicians". Really sad.
I was a young teen growing up in the 80's. It was the best. MTV played videos and the music as great. I miss those days a lot. All I listen to is the music from the 1970's & 80's.......I think of those days all the time...

I remember watching this Episode of Solid Gold, when it was Aired in 1984. I was 10yrs old, and I loved this Song.
Have always loved this song. Pizzulo's vocal is nothing short of top shelf. Mendes was a brilliant producer/arranger and managed to stay in the forefront of popular music well into the eighties. Thanks for the post.

Not true, he did quite a few lead vocals earlier in his career. He was very smart to use other vocalists most of the time, though!
Recorded a tape of this song in my boombox back in 83' and have never forgotten it. I was 15 then, I'm 56 today. A good song for a cloudy day. Thanx Jim, RIP.

This song in now available on compact disc. The Confetti album was reissued a few years ago. One of the best songs of 1984.

...and to this day, an almost criminally underrated voice is little-known to most people. Joe's is one of the best... ever. Listen to that range, tone, control; I mean, it's like our other favorites of the era with even more flexibility between falsetto and true voice. You can't even tell, because his range is ridiculous. He should have been hired for even more than we know. Pretty much this song and the ballad "Never gonna let you go" are the only two still well known, and even they are hardly talked about. The talent is obviously above most.

I heard this at the store today. I never listened to the words until now. In 1984 I was 16. Back then this wasn't my type of music but use to hear it in on the radio in my Dad's car. the only words I could remember in this song was "your slipping away from me" and I thought that was the name of the song.

ASS KICKING SONG!!! While I was in California with my father. My Father and I were at my Uncle's house and my cousin
Maria asked me if I wanted to compete with her closest friend in a Roller-Skating tournament. I Had skated with Maria's
closest friend in a prior tournament and we wound up winning. All of us were having a barbecue and I was helping my Uncle
& Dad with the cooking!!!! Maria and her friend came over & I said, "Hello'!! to both of them!! Maria's friend told me that she
wanted to enter me in a Tournament and the Prize Package was $25,000.00 Dollars, New Skate Equipment, Custom Rink Jackets
and a Gorgeous Trophy . I told Maria that I just want to go and have fun because I have nothing to prove to anyone!!! My father &
my uncles told me, " Allie when you skate you bring a style that NO ONE has EVER SEEN!!!! That is what makes you Unique!!! So
with that I told Maria's friend, "Let's Do IT"!!!! I got dressed up nice and went with maria and her friend!!! My father & our family
came along as well!!! My Uncle Willy & his girlfriend Erica were with us and I felt so comfortable because they knew what I was
capable of!!! When we got to the tournament a lot of the other people who were competing knew Maria and her friend but knew
nothing about me. A lot of them were not very happy with me being there!!! The tournament got under way and I ignored the negativity
I received,. Maria, her friend and I were last. Everyone competed and were fun to watch. The last skate for us was a couple's skate.
and someone told Maria, Her friend, & me not to go out because they had such a points lead we had no chance of winning. Maria
and her friend got upset and started to cry!! My uncle's and everyone else got upset!!! I pulled my Uncle Willy aside and told him
to say, " LEVEL the BUILDING"!! "NO PRISONERS"!!! then watch all "HELL"!!! break loose'!!! This song started and I my energy was
beyond "MAGNUM NUCLEAR"!! I had tears in my eyes!! and "LOST MY MIND" !!! My uncle screamed, "LEVEL THE BUILDING' "NO
PRISONERS"!!! then I SCREAMED, "DETONATE"!!!! Maria's friend and I then "DESTROYED"!!! the skate floor and every one competing
I used the "CANNON"!! the "TOMCAT"!!! as I was throwing Maria's friend all over the rink!!! I also put on a skating clinic and gave
everyone the skating lesson of their LIVES!!!! People were SCREAMING & FREAKING OUT"!!!! My Family was in "SHOCK"!!! We got
done and WON!!! "HANDS DOWN"!!! "NO CONTEST"!!!! Maria's friend was crying & holding me and said to me, " YOU are NOT HUMAN

Wow. A lot of people are right in saying that this song is a rare find. I heard it recently on satellite radio but hadn't heard it since in over 20 years. Why don't the soft rock/80's radio stations play it? It was a big hit in 1984!

I absolutely love this song.......I knew the lyrics but could never think of the name or who sang the song but Thank God I finally figured it out.........I sure miss the 80's......that was when MTV was all about the music and not the perverted reality shows they have today............I wish they would bring the MTV back like it was then and the DJ's like Martha Quinn, Allen Hunter, and Nena Blackwood .....those were the days.
Funny enough all those vjs are now on Sirius XM radio. I guess video didn't kill the radio star after all. Lol.
Funny thing, I don’t think there was a video for this song. It got played a lot on radio in the summer of ‘84. By that time, video was the thing to do and probably cost them chart position.
