Good news: the English translation is finally available (turn on the subtitles!), after Irina has made the poetic translation of the lyrics to Russian, which I used as a primary source. I've asked Irina about the meaning of this song before, and she answered: "This song is about the Chakhadan river", without going into much detail. While I don't want to bother her with more questions, and the double translation would be inevitably unprecise (not to mention that my English is also far from perfect), I made my best to keep it as close to the original Yukaghir lyrics as possible, using the dictionary. Of course, corrections are always welcome.

It gladdens my heart to see younger generations learning Kolyma Yukaghir. Most of the speakers are elderly and their children rarely speak the language - an all-too-common situation with minority languages worldwide. Every language contains a different world-view: when a language dies, it's as if a planet dies with it.

After listening to this, I can see why some people think Yukaghir may be a Uralic language. It has a surprisingly Uralic sound to it in my opinion.

Unsurprising, and probably indicative of the future sound of the language if it survives (and I sincerely hope it does!). The influence of Russian culture and language is part of the price of connecting with the outside world, which is more or less necessary to survive nowadays, for better and for worse. The same applies in North America, where most native languages now have an English ring to them, albeit to varying degrees: the languages with very few speakers tend to show this more than the more (relatively) commonly-spoken ones.
