Since I moved to Missouri, I have noticed that there weren't any waves to ride, no tubes to conquer, nothing, but I have a river 1/4 mile away, a lake 1 mile away, and many streams nearby.
I wanted to try surfing just below the dam when they opened the gate but for some reason, the Army Corps of Engineers didn't really like my brilliant idea, so I noticed all of these shiny rocks just lying about, as a matter of fact, I even said to myself, "Looky here! There are all of these shiny rocks just lying about!"
Since my wife passed on 5 years ago, I have ended up talking to myself a lot, it seems ...
So, last year, I began to pick up some of these shiny rocks and began to tumble them, and I was amazed!
Tiger eyes! Agates! Petosky stones! Garnets! Howlites!
      And many others.
Then the Pastor's wife gave me a very nice big chunk of howlite to polish, which I lost, immediately.
OK, so I am getting old, and my memory isn't as good as it once was, so I may yet find here stone, but for the past few months, I can't find it.
      Bummer drag, eh!
I went and polished up some of my own collection, but I thought about none of being near large enough to equal what she had given to me, so I set about cutting, polishing, and cabbing one of them and I went and produced a howlite sphere, all shined up.
I accompanied the cabochon with a nice wire wrap, accomplishing that with a glass cutting machine, and provided a nice sterling silver chain.
She was thrilled, and I dodged the bullet.
We don't want to anger the pastor's wife, now do we?
In the middle of all of this, I fractured my right femur into 4 pieces, so now my going out to rockhound are over for now and seeing as to how I am turning 70 in a few months, that might be forever.
If you could, please, can you tell me where I might be able to purchase good rocks online? I see this and that in here, but I don't want to waste money by ordering something and being disappointed.
Thank you for any help that you might provide to me!
      Tim

Wow, I loved reading your story. I’m sorry to hear about your leg bone! I think a local rock shop would be a good place to start. You know rockhounds- we’re always happy to talk! And definitely look into a rock club in your area. Hopefully, there’s one close by you. That’s an amazing way to get in on some good rock-buying opportunities. There’s always people looking to pare down their collections. I was tempted to buy some pieces from you! It sounds like you know what you’re doing! Great talking to you. And I’m always happy to talk to you any time!

Well, not being able to drive due to a head injury suffered while being in the service and finding nobody that wants to get involved in rockhounding or the rock related buying of rocks, I am sort of stuck here at my house.
For some reason, I could work, but the VA hospital made sure that I couldn't drive.
OK, a Dr. at the VA hospital made sure that I couldn't drive.
I mean, whoever heard of a hospital doing that, right?
Oh, yeah, I can cut rocks, polish them, tumble or vibrate them, and I can even cab them, but without any sort of reliable transportation to the nearest city (30 miles away) that has a rockhound club, I am stuck here, hoping for somebody to tell who is reliable for purchasing online.
I used to at least hitch a ride to the nearby creeks, and I could make my way down to the Osage River but having busted my femur into flinders (which is a medical bit of terminology ((trust me on that)) ), I can't even walk down to the river.
The way to the river wasn't that hard, but now, trying to get back to my house, and the road there and has a serious downhill and an uphill angle to it, so ...
I was always pretty much self-dependent, but now being both a hermit and a self-dependent old cuss does have its' drawbacks, to be sure.
The wife got sick, and seeing as to how I was her caretaker (I was a Respiratory Therapist after having retired from the service), and my wife having had COPD (with Covid-19 doing her in, in a hospital an hour and a half away), after six years of me being her caretaker, everything was alright, I suppose.
I mean, who could be a better health caretaker for her, other than me?
During her six years of being housebound, once she became housebound, it seems that every single friend of hers always had something better to do than to call her, visit, etc.
      Not one call.
      Not one visit.
      For the entire 6 years.
      Me?
I was Commandant of my small town's Marine Corps League.
      Plenty of buddies!
When I quit that, I took up making sure that my wife's needs were met. I got the biggest zero-turn mower available from the nearby hardware store so that I could do our lawn in the shortest amount of time, which was 10 minutes, so that I could be available for my wife.
I went to the nearby Walmart once every couple of weeks.
I made the dash to the nearest post office to pick up our mail once per week, because there aren't really any streetside mailboxes around here, nearby.
Yep, I drove her SUV, but very carefully because what else could I do, to shop and pick up the mail.
I'm not proud of doing that, but what else could I have done?
Since she passed, the vehicle was sold, anyway.
Now, I did notice something strange.
      What happened to MY friends?
Were they all canoodling with my wife's friends?
      No calls.
      No visits.
      For 6 years?
Finally, with her gone, I have found that being a hermit is quite alright for me!
      Really, truly!
I have a ride to the Post Office, to the Drs. office, and to Walmart, although this 'friend' makes sure that those rides are paid for.
Like, he lives down the street from me, but for some reason, to get to the next city?
All of a sudden, his time is booked up for the next month or two, except for in this city trips.
Yep, I find that living as a hermit is just fine with me.
I do have a girlfriend, now, and her name is Buffy.
She is of the silent type, but what else should I expect from my wall hung friend, a female buffalo skull?
At least she listens to me whenever I talk to her.
Yes sir, being a hermit is the finest kind of life for me, You Betcha!
Oh my, time sure does fly, especially while keyboarding my reply.
With it being 1:20am, I need to go change the grit to polish on my rock/gems, because they won't be changing that stuff on their own.
Maybe I could talk Buffy into doing that, and as I said, she is a great listener!
However, she has as of yet to do anything that I have asked her to do.
I'll give her a few more months, and I am pretty sure that she'll be helping me out.
      Talk to you later!

OK that reply was both tragic and hilarious. You started to make me laugh at the end with Buffy. I really wanna send you some rocks! I’ve collected a lot of material over the years from my neck of the woods and I wanna share some of it with you! Send me an email here’s my email address, and I’ll get all the skinny little details from you. JESUSITL@msn.com
