  • I clean up a few blades on the swather by using the angle grinder on the cutting edge. Grease the zerks throughout the swather and check the main drive gearshaft to make sure the oil level is good. After hauling manure on the hay field last fall I remember why keep the head tilted up, I hit a pretty good sized rock and have to do a little fixing.

Hope the rock made the ride and didn't lose in the field. We run a 1431 new Holland.

I have a quick question, what is the fastest speed that you can cut with the 4995? I am looking at one to buy and I am curious, I have a JD 4890 with swather and sickle bar.

Honestly I’ve heard people go 10 mph I just don’t see the point if you hit a rock or if the field is rough. Fastest I go is 7.5 mph and I don’t do it very often. Only if the field is smooth and it’s cutting nice and I know there’s no rocks. Otherwise I’m running 5-6.5 it’s definitely capable of going faster but to me it’s not worth wearing the parts faster or the risk of wrecking something. Also depends what kind of platform your gonna pair with it ours is a 995 and it’s got quite a few hours on it. We just replace the blades and the wear parts and it’s done us just fine. We’re just cutting for ourselves, personally I think a sickle cuts a little nicer but yeah can’t go as fast.

I’d just get a disc mower platform for your 4890

I like that header. We have an older type header or a newer type header not sure. Ours is not the crimper header but it does have the rotatory blades. Can't use the grinder in the field as it would start fires when sharpening blades. Our type header has less grease zerts. Yours is similar to our pull type swather that has all the drive lines. But these self propelled machines can really cut grass. Love to drive them. I hope we can get another one soon to go with the one we have. Then we would need another baler too. And more hands to run them. lol Love John Deere so simple.

Just got rid of that 5400 chopper and header. Bought a 6650 and 6 row kemper head
