El mejor de Atari 800xl. Hubiera podido ser uno de los grandes con música de fondo. Pero creo que la tecnología del Atari no daba para tanto

+Czaro Wnica Some other Atari 800XL games that had excellent memorable tunes were
'Feud' a pretty dull adventure about wizards collecting herbs for spells
but great theme music, and 'Panther' an isometric scrolling shooter.
Also 'Amaurote' had creepy 'Twilight Zone' in-game music and a great theme tune.

Zeppelin games, which made this as well as Draconus and Ninja Commando, had a signature look of fairly rich coloured backdrops; larger, more detailed sprites (often with a shiny or jellybean look); and complex music (for an 8-bit computer.

A few weeks ago (thanks to a clever chap who managed to produce for me an infinite lives version) I recorded a full longplay of this great game, I will upload it soon.
The Atari 800xl had a wonderful mettallic look about It's graphics, even the sound of the 800 sounded mettallic to me if that makes any sense.
My fav games on this system are: Montezuma's Revenge, Oil's Well, Miner 2049er, Bounty Bob Strikes Back, Yoomp!, Desmond's Dungeon and Jet Boot Jack,...great games.

This was when they started to use tricks to include more colors on screen at once...unlike the C64, it was too bad that by 1988, most Atari fans moved onto the Amiga 500 or Atari ST, while there was still far more C64 development going on that further pushed that 8 bit console. Nevertheless, great video.

Yeah, the atari has a LOT of those.
No seriously, the list of 'software graphics modes' on wikipedia for Atari computers has about 25 variations listed.
But one of the first things which seemed to have been rare in most games was to actually use the 3 GTIA modes.
All of them reduce your horizontal resolution to 80 pixels, but you get to choose between 9 colours of your choice. (though you can't use sprites in this mode), 16 colours at the same intensity, or 16 shades of a single hue.
Combine those last two and you get one of the first known tricks, that gets you 256 colours on the system.
Turns out a slight variation on this trick can even get 4096 colours.
And then there's a whole list of variations that get you something inbetween, like 20 colours, 144, etc, though they all have their quirks, advantages and disadvantages.
The atari pushed to it's limits can output graphics that would look impressive even on a 16 bit system. But, without those tricks and clever coding it has a few limitations that make it more painful to work with when developing games compared to say, a c64. (every time I try and write something for the Atari the thing that hurts the most is the sprite limitations. There's 8 of them yes, but the combined horizontal resolution of all 8 is almost nothing. Vertical detail is fine; the Sprites are the height of the whole screen, but horizontally, the c64 has almost 5 times the detail. Plus, c64 multicolour sprites are at the expense of horizontal sprite resolution, but Atari multicolour sprites are at the expense of the total number of sprites you get. Multicolour sprites means you get just 4 sprites with just 20 pixels of horizontal detail between them.)
Technical quirks aside though, the real reason the c64 games started to look better is of course people kept trying to make decent ones for much longer. c64 games were still frequently being made in 1988, and some even into the early 90's...
Atari games were few and far between after 1984 it seems... And those that did get released were often low effort ports of c64 games that didn't work properly. (how can you make a c64 game SLOWER on a system with nearly double the cpu speed!?)

Me and my brother played it better :-) but we had some strategies: safe the first shooting - if you are sure, you'll be destroyed - change it for the rarest used one; use laser for dragons, caterpillars and carpets. We could pass 5 levels without losing one life!

Typical issue of games in the 80's,...I've always said that a game should have a good ending, that way it gives the player incentive to keep coming back and playing, I mean what's the point battling away through a game when it just simply loops back round to level 1 with no reward?!,...just idiotic.

Atari 800xl? Ataris last console? The game looks pretty good compaired to other atari games I have seen...
09:20 black and white stage! NICE!!
    19:30 no mercy here!
21:45 these enemies move weirdly..I like it!
22:14 normaly I like bossbattles...but this seems kinda boring...
ps: like the idea of 100% original!
