    Helpful video. I eat blueberries regularly because of their many health benefits. Other fruits and veggies also bring health benefits, despite the natural sugars (anti-oxidants, fiber, etc.) so I try include them without going overboard on my carb counts. The occasional half banana sliced on my yogurt now feels like a decadent treat, better than a banana split! (ok not exactly, but close).

      Banana ripeness also plays a role in sugar content. The greener the banana the lower the sugar content and higher the probiotic value. In general when you start to see the brown spots on a banana it has the highest sugar. In short, eat bananas but I recommend paying attention to ripeness.

    I think a mistake ppl make w keto is that they over simplify and just eat meat or protein and not enough fiber. Fiber is important bc its food to ur microbes. Immunity and digestion. It's not just about losing weight but finding optimal health.

      That's right! The danger for me is that “moderation” leaves the door open for a slippery slope into bad habits. Sugar or any kind of sweets (i.e. fruit) are not what a lot of diabetics, obese folks and those with metabolic syndrome can handle. I was all three! Maybe when my body is back to some level of insulin sensitivity, I can handle it.

      Actually, I have a different thought on that. You see for me as diabetic, my sugar addiction mainly came from refined sugar sources, such as soda and junk food. Soda especially was the addiction I had to overcome. Fruit was not something I really ate at all because for me at least, it did not compare to soda, cookies, candy, etc. So now that I have got off the refined sugars and onto the natural sugar, it is a whole different feel. Yes, I enjoy fruit, but I don't feel it fuels my addiction at all to the refined sugar sources. And as far as possibly becoming addicted to fruit, I would say hat doesn't seem to be very common. It is the refined sugar that is bad.

    This is *SO* helpful as are all of your videos, Dr. Gilllaspy. I find that I don't miss fruit, but I don't have much of a sweet tooth to begin with. However, I seem to be doing well, consistently losing weight and feeling better than I have in years, by having tomatoes into my salad. This shift to low-carb eating has been an incredibly journey (about 4 mos., now). Unlike "diets" of the past, I'm rarely hungry (except at mealtimes), do not feel the least bit deprived and even can exercise vigorously 30min x 6d, and even when on my 5-2 intermittent fasting days. My old "carb monsters" were white-flour pasta and potatoes, none of which I seem to miss very much which is....incredibly surprising. :-) I'm 66 and feel better than I did 30 years ago.

  • @wolflahti412
    @wolflahti412 3 года назад +3

    The type of carbohydrate is important. Complex carbs are processed in a more moderate manner than simple carbs. Also, fats moderate the uptake and processing of carbs, leveling the glucose spikes that consuming carbohydrates can cause. Avocados are excellent not just because of their low carb content but also because they contain a lot of healthy fat.
    Also, one of the benefits of blueberries that pushes them into the "best foods" category is their high levels of anti-oxidants. You can't look at just carb and fiber ratios to judge the suitability of a food.

Also I do not eat breakfast until an hour or more after I get up, but hey I do have my coffee neat, LOL! I am trying to lose weight but not on an actual keto diet, I like my foods. I am up early and last meal (of 2 meals no snacks) between 2 -3, and fast until next morning. OH! after my last meal I will break off a square of chocolate bar of 72% or higher, I really like that bitter sweet taste. Not hungry, cravings are gone, down 20 pounds in several months. Slow? Yes! That is how I want it, 1 -2 lbs., a week. As mentioned I am not on keto but learning things from it. I learn a lot from watching videos like this then twist it to fit what I am happy with and works for me. Thank you Dr. Gillaspy for doing these videos.

    • @johnnypenso9574
      @johnnypenso9574 3 года назад +4

      Insulin sensitivity means the body is efficient at using glucose for energy. Insulin stimulates muscle, fat, and liver cells to absorb glucose. The more resistant the cells are to insulin (insulin resistant) the more glucose you are going to have floating around your system that needs to be dealt with in some other way usually by storing it as fat. If the cells do not remove glucose from the blood, the body will store it in the tissues as fat.

    All these nutrition tips are helpful... but the fact is exercise is 3x more effective. A study done showed that there was a 3x (300%) greater chance of death for a person on the bottom 25% of people than the top 25% who exercise regularly - REGARDLESS - of their diet or personal habits including smoking. If you did smoke there was a 40% greater chance of death than if you didn't... if you had a heart condition you had a 30% greater chance of death in any given year... But exercising was by far the greatest contributor to longevity of life. So yes okay whether you eat this type of sugar of not, or whether you use olive oil or not... all contributes to a healthier life but the two most important factors have nothing to do with what you eat... genetics (your inherited specs) and regular exercise.

    Noticed that apple is at the top-half of the list in terms of net carb... however, others suggest to choose apple for being "low glycemic".. my question is how should we see low carb fruits relative to glycemic index?

    Fruit makes me ravenous within hours. Not for me until goal minus 10 pounds because I need to IF and OMAD if possible, and I don't need to make my burden needlessly harder. My lifetime of garbage = non alchoholic fatty liver so I'm still remaking my body in a ketonic manner for longevity purposes. As always N = 1/ GLTA

    Can you make a video for people who have played around too much eating low carb and lost some weight but started going back and forth and regained. Now its really hard to find a balance. I'm actually having a hard time losing weight altogether now.

    I did Keto for two weeks recently, after eating crap food for years and being pre diabetic 2 years ago..I felt pretty good ..no cravings for sugar, felt full a lot, lost weight, but then when I ate a handful of blue berries , a few hours later I completely 'crashed', the next day the same happened after eating coconut ice cream and yoghurt which has some sugar added. I crashed like my blood sugar had risen then plummeted too far down the other side. It was like my body was having this massive over - reax to sugar that it has not had b4 ...I got scared and upped my carbs again. It was like my body had BECOME MORE insulin resistant than it was b4 ...can I carry on Keto and eat really really low sugar/carbs including NO fruit Is that even sustainable ? ..I do not want to have this reax every time I eat some carbs, even if it is a very small amt of fruit . I upped my carbs again but noticed within two days my inflammation issue was up again.

    Surely the sugars and fibres are separated in the mouth, as saliva digests the starch? So how can fibre slow the absorption process down. Or am I missing something?

    Could you use fruit sugar to make baking ( treat)
    More slowly absorbed?
    In general I know it is pricier.

    I've been on Keto since February, and i made a decision early on that I'd just go cold turkey on fruit (amongst all the other things). After the initial problems, its actually really quite easy. Now I've lost the weight I wanted to, I kinda go in and out, but i certainly dont eat multiple pieces a day!

    Thank you so much, I am very grateful for the list... have downloaded it. That said. I'm still confused re: Net/total carbs. I am trying to keep at 30 gr total carbs. So, avocado is 12+gr total carb. per 100 gr serving. That's a lot. Am I safe to calculate it as a net carb, as per your chart, and keep to my 30gr total daily carb limit? I mean 12 gr for ½ an avocado just isn't reasonable for me at this point.
    Thank you.

    Her so called "step down method" is a recipe for failure you have to go cold turkey for at least a week otherwise you will suffer through six to eight weeks of your body trying to adjust if you just get it over with in one week then you're not hungry then you just start slowly adding in carbs and I mean really slowly my car tolerance is 25G. Spread out through the day if I need anything more than that my blood sugar is starts to rise I go from being 5.5 to 15.

    What if you don't want to lose weight? It is my blood sugar levels I need to control. It was 356. AC1 was 12.The Dr ordered a cetone in urine test, it came back negative. This confuses me, aren't cetones supposed to appear with low or no carb diets?
    Btwy I managed to get blood sugars down to 90-100, with a low carb diet and the meds dr ordered.
