cool video, i worked at a shop that machined large aluminum castings and the machinists always breathed a sigh of relief when we got japanese castings because we knew they'd be higher quality and not reveal a bunch of porosity halfway through machining them
Made in Japan baby! 😁👍
As an auto mechanic that sees his fair share of imports, this is exactly how I feel about vehicle parts. Everything from Japan is just better. Made to a more respectable quality standard.
they actually have some sort of quality control for the quality of their alloy and casting medium. its not rocket science to get good casts, its just way faster and profitable to have bad standards lmao.
@@Max_Chooch In part it's a cultural thing. Even when they were developing their manufacturing, and were the country making those "cheap" products for the US market, they always felt it a sense of honor to do the best job they could. And they'd learn as they went how to improve on what they make.
It's a shame that China, which also had been a country of great craftsmanship, lost all that under the iron fist of the CCP. A government that operates under a pretence of "communism", but is merely out to benefit the few CCP officials at he expense of their people.

I've spent the last 95 years in Foundry industry, it is a hard job
I've spent the last 37 years in the Foundry industry. I've worked perm mold, green sand, ferrous and non ferrous. Worked in in the core room, hand pouring metal, QC, foundry supervisor, Process Engineer and now Sales. Its been a great career.
STFU! Nobody wants your opinion!
I have always wondered why is aluminum not poured from the bottom bypassing the need to remove impurities before pouring. I'm sure there's a good reason. Would love to know. Thanks
@@jonbutcher9805 it's much easier to skim the top of a melt rather than scrape out the bottom of a crucible. It separates itself with buoyancy, so you use that in your favor.
Also, okay, Tim. No insights or anything, just putting your resume out there?
@@nigeypants5500 he's dumb, don't mind him
It appears so easy however the science and engineering along with the craftsmanship that’s involved in sand casting especially is truly a art form in and of itself!
*_ And BTW did you know that 'Moulding' (Foundryman) is the OLDEST TRADE (I mean besides prostitution 🤭😛) _*
I worked in a foundry and in a smelter, the smelter was the most interesting experience I’ve ever had. I poured a lot of metal during that time of my life. We poured ingots and 1000lb blocks then shipped them out to various customers. Back in the 70s it was very physical work and kept me in great shape.
@Gary Webb *_ Also did my apprenticeship as a 'MOULDER' (Foundryman) in 1966 and did my Trade Test to become a Qualified Tradesman 4 years later...... Sadly it all has become mechanised and a 'Non-Qualified' trade now. I'm 74 and look back at those days fondly when it was Sweat and Brawn work and yes we were all fit too! _*
@@liongod1000 Man you got that right I believe that I was in the best shape of my life back in the mid 70d. If ya went to work with a slight cold it was usually gone by the end of your shift. The heat from the furnaces just burned it out of you. I’m glad for the hard work I’ve done cause even at 68 I’m still in pretty good shape.
@@garywebb4244 Working with metal has kept men strong for over 3000 years now, always will.
I came here from an Indian gear manufacturing video, this is super future modern compared to their "safety sandals" around molten steel!
Same with the vids from Packystan. Not one shred of PPE, flip flops, dirt floors, ancient equipment, brutal techniques. Flintstone Manufacturing Company!
@@tomrogers9467 Having worked with people from Pakistan (who immigrated to my country) I can certainly suggest that there is a culture of ignoring safety due to cost/time because of comments like "If I die there is always someone to take my place" (this was said after the second citation for reaching into a live 415 volt switch panel with tools, that weren't even voltage rated, without isolating it)

From the US. Very nicely done video! Bravo!
I work in an anodizing plant. We rohs cast aluminum parts like the ones in the video. The ones we do are made to hold the giant magnets inside of MRI machines. Very cool video. Interesting to see the whole process
AH ! Thus the aluminum housing, thanks. Back in the early 1970s I worked at a fiberglass company and they were making molds for covers on MRI machines.
Excellent aluminum metal casting process by Ibaraki factory in Japan. Very interesting video and gives useful knowledge. Thank you for sharing this beautiful video.

Wow, amazing proses 👍
Salam dari Indonesia 🤝
one addition to the very nice video; the wooden model for making the casting halves out of sand are a lit bigger than the desired casting. The metal shrinks when it cools down so you end up with the desired dimensions. Best, Job
There are special “rulers” called *Shrink Rules* which are stretched just a little bit to account for this shrinkage. For aluminum, it’s 3/16 of an inch per foot.
They can be found on EBay, which is where I bought *mine.*
I was particularly struck by the "magic ball" at the end of the video, which creates a 3D model of the casting on the computer!

I have also been a molder many moons ago. Great video. My only complaint is the fact they all have brand new uniforms which is ok I guess. We just wore tshirts or nothing pouring off. The brand new face masks are a dead giveaway that those are not common place at that facility. Silicosis is a nasty thing. I hope they really do wear them all the time and it wasn’t just for the camera. Or they filmed during COVID. At the end of the day true craftsman. It’s hard work dirty work. Thanks for sharing
You and I clearly have radically different concepts of what “brand new” means, since nothing there looked remotely “brand new” to me.
And clean looking PPE could just mean they actually replace them as often as one is supposed to.
@@tookitogo Ok - perhaps look again. They clothes look like they are right out of a package and those are not disposable masks - after 4 hours they should be filthy. Anyway, point wasnt to take away from the craftsmanship. Glad they got new gear.
@@captainover-tighten6729Everyone got a heads up about camera during the company-wide morning brief/stretching exercises. Clean uniforms issued daily by employer. PPE absolutely mandatory on shop floor, insurance companies really insist on it. Old shop not third world shop.
@@captainover-tighten6729 I saw your comment right when I was at the beginning of the video, and so I was looking for new uniforms the entire time. I didn’t see any. Not being sarcastic, but I literally have no idea what you’re seeing.
@@tookitogo Hi, see the comment above - the staff are issued new uniforms every day, apparently. Which is a pleasant surprise.
This giant aluminum pump is used for pumping the guts through the sewrage lines. For large residential areas the lines are 48 inches in diameter and all the comode waste goes through these lines and pumped by these aluminum pumps. Good job. LIked the video.
The India and Pakistan guys should be watching this to see how investing in your business can improve efficiency and make the job easier for the workers. Also I really like seeing how clean they keep their work space, those rundown factory vids trigger my OCD lol
Pakistani guys are religious slaves. Japanese guys aren't.
You do realise that the backyard videos of Pakistan that you see is a fledgling attempt by RUclips content makers to make some money
Whereas India has world class casting and forging industry companies in the world
I think the word you are looking for is safe(safety). Whenever you see those middle eastern workshops, were everyone is in flipflops and baggy clothes, I always think about how high the worker injury/death rate must be.
Yeah, i miss safety sandals and safety pajams too.
@@Gorphee isn't it wonderful how racist comments come out at every video by Pakistanis regarding flip flops and fake crocodile tears for their safety
But not a peep from anyone about the unsafe and dangerous working conditions in Qatar where more than 6500 poor workers have died while building the soccer world cup stadia
So commenting on poor workers who are working in their own country, in their own workshops, giving them unnecessary advice while they are eking out a living is fair game and gives the white man a feeling of superiority
But cat gets their tongue when it's time to give the same advice to the rich Arabs who are killing people for a white man's game

Good video, excellent comments, all spoiled by adding music!
🎡Thank you for showing me places where it is not always possible to visit🎪
Wow, those castings are huge! I wondered how they’d manage to get a sand mold that big to hold together, but the video explained that it was bonded with resin.
=> What were those rope-like things they laid on the face of the mold? Do they act like gaskets, to reduce flashing? (Metal escaping through the crack between the two parts of the mold)
I do believe so, possibly tin or some alloy designed to melt and create a seal
Absolutely gaskets.
I worked alongside Navy Moulders for a while; they did small part casting, including some rather precise work. Pump housings, impellers, small boat screws, and other more intricate cast parts. They used gasket-like material of a similar nature.
