  • My stock Skyrich lithium battery HJTZ5S-FP-C failed after 32H, 4months. It still outputs 13V at no load, but fails under load. First time to have a lithium battery fail so quickly.

    That battery failing in my te300 prompted me to install kickstart kit and a capacitor kit to allow for starting with complete battery failure.

    My OEM '20 300 XCWi battery (in service since 8/2019) died to less than 1.2 vdc 3 weeks after a ride this past September. Unknowingly, I had a bad fuel pump relay that created a parasitic current drain with the engine not running! Replaced the relay and I reclaimed the battery to accept full lithium charge, wherein I'm hoping for 5 yrs come 2024. Currently 192 hrs on motor as well!

      Yes, I've always had good service from stock batteries on previous bikes. That's why I was so surprised by the failure of this one and made the video to show that it can happen. Hopefully just a rare random case...

    Both those are from the same factory. Just unlucky it died so soon. I had the same issues with KTM batteries. I changed to an Anti Gravity Re Start battery and no issues yet with being used on three different bikes.

    Running stock skyrich batteries in two different snowbike builds. 2023 KTM 450SXF and a 2023 KTM 300SX. Two winter seasons on them so far, and no sign of decline yet. Ordering a NOCO as a backup for when one of the bikes batteries does give up the ghost. Hear they are great batteries for $80.

    i'm sure its a random battery failure. i had exactly same diagnose as yours on my 300exc years ago, could be a skyrich lithium too. Good voltage reading confused me until i threw a wire across the terminal and the weak spark tells me everything. Put back a new battery and no issues from the bike.

      @@TokyoOffroad fingers crossed. Hope you have a great ride! and thanks for your informative videos.
      Update on my situation is that I recharged the battery, and managed to start the bike, however once the bike got up to temperature it would cut out. Checked plug, changed inline fuel filter, checked tps voltage. Found water ingress to fuse module thingy, have cleaned the contacts and got it in the house to thoroughly dry. Will refit in the morn and continue fault finding from there if problem persists.

    Seems to me that all the OEM batteries are shit. I think they are finding the lightest battery to help claimed weight of the bike. My lithium battery on my 2021 FE501S would not start my bike after only 2 months. I was shocked how light it was when I removed it. Installed antigravity battery. Was heavier, but had much higher CCA rating and the bike starts so much easier than before

    Great review, Think I might have the same problem with mt bike, Q how do you do a load test ?

    • @TokyoOffroad
      @TokyoOffroad  6 месяцев назад +1

      If your battery is in the bike you can do a load test by connecting a voltmeter, measure the no load voltage (should be about 13V) then press the starter switch and note the voltage under load. If the voltage drops very low you know that there is an issue. This could be due to a problem with the battery, a connection issue, starter relay issue, or starter motor issue. To isolate the issue, disconnect the battery and apply a load like I did in the video. If the no load battery voltage is below 13V try charging it (use a lithium specific charger) before testing it.

    I heard from a guy that has 2024 tbi that there is a recall for start switch, water can get in easy then your starter spins while engine is running.

    do you need the capacitor hack to bump/kick start?

    • @TokyoOffroad
      @TokyoOffroad  6 месяцев назад +1

      There's no kick start on the 2024 model and no way to fit one, so that's not an option. I was able to hill start OK though without a capacitor even with the failed battery. Previously I tested hill starting with the battery disconnected and it would start but then died after a few seconds. As such I think it depends on the battery failure mode whether the TBI can continue to run. I also tried a Tokyo Offroad BLS Capacitor with no battery connected and the bike would start and run, but the engine light would blink. The engine light went out when the battery was reconnected.

    How/why they fail after 2 years?

    • @TokyoOffroad
      @TokyoOffroad  6 месяцев назад

      This is the first hard failure I've had. Normally I get 2-4years and starting performance starts to degrade. Typically I replace after about 2years (before the battery dies) as I don't want any issues while out riding.

  • @Jrod_FPV

    your result from the load test is also the behavior of a drained but otherwise healthy battery. And maybe also a failed LVC (low voltage cut off)
    Often times a single over discharge on lithium will not affect the life of the battery significantly. So if it takes a full charge and passes another load test, battery may only have a failed/missing LVC. Along with faulty charge system.
    Did you rule out a failed charging system by attempting to charge the battery and trying the load test again?
    Though i was under the impression all decent batteries have a reliable low voltage cutoff that would prevent the battery from being over discharged and damaged.
    That sounds like it should be a warranty replacement if the world were fair. I would personally consider it worth the phone call to my dealer and give them the chance to do the right thing. At least I'd like to know the reason if they won't cover it. If we're not paying for a reliable machine made of reliable components, we sure better be paying for customer service... These are priced on the high end of the market, there's got to be a reason for it.

      I rode with the failed battery for about 3H (bump started the engine). The battery power was not enough to turn over the starter motor when I stopped the engine a couple of times during the ride. Following 3H of riding I measured the battery voltage at 13.2V with no load, which is a normal voltage for these batteries. If the battery was fully depleted of charge the voltage would be well below 13V. As such something inside the battery must have failed. The bike's charge system appears to be fine. I was pleasantly surprised that the bike runs fine (other than not being able to start it with the starter motor) with the failed battery. I'll be riding on Sunday with the new battery and will make a video and comment regarding how it starts.

    • @TokyoOffroad
      @TokyoOffroad  6 месяцев назад +1

      As michael397 mentioned, I think the control circuit inside the battery may have failed. Either way it's not good and surprised to have a problem this early. Yes, I'll let my dealer know. Even if there is no warranty, it's good to let the dealer know about this type of problem.

    I had a similar experience on my 2023 300XC during a 2 day race. Day 2 the lights would come on but bike wouldn't start. I had to bump start the bike all day, it never recovered enough charge to even attempt to start the bike. The battery actually "bubbled" out the side of the case. I don't know if this was for riding for ~6 hours with a bad battery, or if it bubbled through the casing and that was the cause of my no-start issue (which is what I've been assuming). I replaced the battery and all has been good. I was worried the voltage regulator was going to have problems riding for a day with a bad battery. I still have the bad battery - been meaning to ask if they would warranty it.

    That battery is low SOC. Fully charged LI battery should be 14.3V

    • @TokyoOffroad
      @TokyoOffroad  6 месяцев назад

      Not true. I just fully charged the new battery using a lithium charger. It measures 13.4V with no load. The failed battery measured 13.2V when first removed from the bike with no load. I did try charging it with an Optimate Lithium battery charger. The error light comes on and it does not charge. There is definitely something wrong internally in the failed battery.

    • @TokyoOffroad
      @TokyoOffroad  6 месяцев назад +1

      I'm going to back pedal on my above comment. I just measured the voltage at the battery (with the new battery) while the bike is running and it measured 14.4V. I left it running for about 10mins and shut the engine off, left it for a few minutes and he battery voltage reads 13.9V. So with the bike running I do see a voltage close to the 14.3V you mentioned. Either way the old battery will not charge so there is definitely something wrong with it.
