“How is discernment developed? Being a good member in a local church.” What??? No Bible verse or commandment in the entire Bible says we need to be a member of a Sunday morning church. Jesus himself as well as his 12 disciples were not members of a local Sunday morning church. At least I have discernment to recognize this truth. Yet you say it’s key to growing in discernment yet provide absolutely no doctrine from Jesus to support this. This is proof of your clinging on to the traditions and doctrines of men.
Hi Deborah, the Bible does teach that obedience to Scripture is wisdom. One example is Proverbs 2:6-7 which says, “For the LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding; he stores up sound wisdom for the upright; he is a shield to those who walk in integrity,” So uprightness, or righteousness, is defined by God, and we know God’s definition of all things by what He’s revealed in Scripture. This means that when Paul, an apostle invested with authority by Christ Himself, says in Hebrews 10:25 that we’re not to “neglect to meet together, as is the habit of some,” it’s a matter of obedience to Christ, because Christ is the one who gave Paul and the other apostles the authority to establish the Church and to teach believers how to function within it, as he says in 1 Timothy 3:14-15 “I am writing these things to you so that, if I delay, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth.” Beyond the command not to neglect meeting together, the overwhelming pattern shown to us in the New Testament is of Christians gathered and meeting together in different locations. This is also clear in the book of Revelation, when Christ dictates individual letters to specific local churches for whom He had assessments and instructions. All that to say, the note at the end of the podcast, about how discernment is linked to our commitment to the local church, holds true in light of the fact that it’s a matter of obedience, and obedience reflects ones trust in what God has said, and trust in God reveals that one has good understanding or discernment. Heb 5:14 But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.
