Dr. Stapleton, there are so many ideas that I have to write a thesis that are new innovations. How can I find and gather the information I need to write my thesis when some of these ideas seem far-fetching from today's knowledge and understandings? I'm in my first year of my PhD program and I love your videos!!!!

I was approached to proofread and copyedit a Phd thesis. This video helped me get a clear lens on what to what out for while evaluating the amount of work the thesis will likely need from me. Thus helping me know how much to charge for my services for this particular request. Im just curious though, I was just told that the thesis need to be ready in two weeks, I have just now received a sample (intro and first chapter ), two weeks sounds quite rush, is it normal to wait to the very last minute to have it proofread? That’s going to cost them! 😅

Hi Andy, there is a demographic that tend to apply for PhD alot due to low levels of employment or opportunity. These are people from low and middle income countries. Can you explore opportunities for people who are coming from particulary Africa? Second, one thing I have learnt from years of working in a research institute in my home country and doing my PhD in the Uk is that every research group have their culture. I worked with an academic who did not belief that a PhD student should be married. Eventually, she was looking for reasons to prove that I cannot do my PhD. She became the biggest impedement to my PhD and I am happy to say I successfully completed my studies. The funny, out of a group of 3 PhD students, I was the one who completed the work earlier but was the one who got the most challenges. Everyone saw what was going on but kept quite. Andy, just imagine having a supervisor who kept never believed you could do your PhD and tried every means to sarbotage it. That was my PhD experience, I do not want to have anything to do with her again especially because I go to know what she was saying about me to others. I completed my PhD without a support system, with a supervisor who`s ego was hurt because she was wrong about me. I think the success of a PhD training depends on the student but largely depends on the supervisor. I think it is wise to thoroughly investigate your supervisor before accepting an offer. Some academics prefer to work with certains gender, certain skin colour (eventhough they might need a dark skinned person to show that they also employ minorities, but do not relate to them properly), marital status and religion. Some do not openly say it but it is an unspoken rule in the group. I also think, it is not safe to be the first or second PhD student of an academic. You may become their experiment.

I know that doing a science based thesis is probably a vastly different animal to one in the Humanities, but I am still confused by the methodology section. In theory I know that it is the 'how', such as how are you going to undertake the thesis, and I know how I am going to do it practically, but its the expectation of having to explain it is what stumps me. In the Humanities there are many methodologies, and it is difficult for me to distil it into a coherent methodology section. Maybe its just me but this is the most difficult section for me, even worse than the lit review.

100 pages from motivation to conclusions, that is what my supervisor said, because much more than that it means you were not able to present your ideas crearly in your thesis.

Hi Andy, I absolutely love your channel. I am doing a PhD in Education and it sounds like yours was in science. Nevertheless, have you come across PhD theses that have a unique structure and style of narrative but still follow the traditional format? Or can you direct me to any resources that may help? My supervisor said that some of my ideas sound like a manifesto and so I am interested in finding out different structural formats to a thesis. Thanks

Out of curiosity, is the field of photovoltaics you specialized in an increasingly dead end today?
I can imagine that to survive in that field, one needs a teaching job for the sake of one's sanity to balance the periods of not knowing what to research and becoming dead wood to your employer.
