Great video as always! I’m keeping Citi in my radar while I’m finishing up with my personal Chase cards, so I’m happy to hear they’re maintaining their viability as a travel card option in light of stronger competition. Just want to note that I forget if it’s easy or hard to insert a corrective caption, but you said “18k” for a first class round trip flight at 10:28 and I’m sure you meant “180k”.
I got the Citi Strata Premier Card as soon as it came out. Why would I want to book a hotel through the Citi travel portal when I can book from the hotel directly for less money? This makes the $100 hotel credit worthless, and it is therefore not an offset for the $95 annual fee. Secondly, there is 3% cash back on airlines. Big deal? Why not 3% cash back on ALL travel like the Costco card, which is also from Citi? The Costco Visa also gives 4% cash back on gas and EV charging, not 3% like the Strata Premier. I was also frustrated that a points partner is Choice Hotels, but when I stayed at Radisson Hotels recently, which are Choice Hotels, my Citi Strata Premier points did were not usable. I'm going to withdraw my points as cash at the end of this year, and convert the card to a free Custom Cash card. I'm DONE with Strata Premier.
@@AskSebby Hi Sebby. Thanks for your reply to me and for your question. I did not have access to the Citi Travel portal until after I got the Strata Premier card, so I did not know that my reservation at the Radisson Hotel would be about $100 more through the portal than if booked directly on the Radisson website until after I received the card. Furthermore, I was also disappointed to discover that via the Citi Travel portal, I could only book non-cancelable / non-refundable reservations at Radisson Hotels, while for a slightly higher reservation price, I could get a cancelable reservation on the Radisson website and not have to pay for the hotel stay until I arrived for check-in. It did not occur to me to check to find out that if I transferred my Citi points to Choice Hotels that I still would not be able to use them at Radisson, despite it being a Choice hotel, because at the time that I applied for the Strata Premier card, I just assumed that I would book through the Citi Travel portal. None of that was disclosed on the Citi website at the time that I applied for the Strata Premier card. It is true that 3 points for air travel is disclosed on the Citi website at the time of application for the card. However, I already have the Costco Anywhere Visa Card by Citi and it reimburses 3% for "travel", so my brain incorrectly misinterpreted "airfare" to mean "travel". That was my error and I take full responsibility for reading something into the points multiplier that was not there. My mistake. I got the card in May, when it first came out. I needed to pay for my homeowners, auto and umbrella liability insurance premiums all in June, so I paid for those items right away in order to qualify for the 75,000 point bonus. I'm still getting a nice amount of cash from the sign up bonus to compensate me for the small ding on my credit report due to the hard credit pull from applying for the Strata Premier card. So, I do not regret getting the card. I just don't think that the card is worth keeping. Oh, one more thing. The Strata Premier card offers these benefits for air travel: Common Carrier Trip Cancellation, Trip Interruption, Trip Delay, and Lost or Damaged Luggage. It does not offer Travel Accident insurance. This is also not disclosed until after applying for, being approved for, and receiving the card with the booklet "Your Guide to Protection Benefits". Since I already pay for travel insurance to cover my entire trip when I go for a big vacation, I would have preferred to have Travel Accident insurance. Fortunately, the Costco Visa card has $250,000 in Travel Accident insurance. That's another reason why I would prefer to pay for a vacation on the Costco card, rather than the Strata Premier card.
🦘We used the Strata Premier in the 17 countries we visited this year. It is the best card for use outside the US, with 3X on gas, groceries, dining, etc. We book flights with the Amex Plat and hotels with the chain's card (Ritz-Carlton, Hyatt, IHG, etc.) We used the $100 hotel credit at the Mercure Iguazú Falls, Argentina for 3 nights, meaning we were paid $5 to use the card (as VentureX fans say).
Just picked it up a couple of weeks ago, love all of the categories. Considering the news that citi will be American Airline’s exclusive credit card partner, it’s likely that Thank You points will be transferable to American at some point in the future. I like booking JAL flights JFK-HND with my American miles, TY point transfers to American will certainly help the cause.
You loose a day when you leave LA in Wednesday arriving at Sydney around 7 or 8 am of Friday, , in the way back leaving in Friday arriving in Friday as well, cool scene to see the sun stop and going backwards. Hahaha
Only issue I have with getting this card is sense I don’t value to hotel credit as I don’t plan to spend $500 a hotel stay and especially through citi travel portal so there is no way to get back a $95 annual fee and spending would be one if I couldn’t get the same multiplers with other cards
@@AskSebby I think the only way I could use out of the hotel credit is if I traveled for business and got reimbursed for a hotel stay for over $500. Win-win!!
For those going to universal studios Florida and want Express passes, you use this on the throwaway premier hotel just to get the complimentary express passes.
8:58 The easier way of doing this Asia-originating roundtrip from the US is what I call "nested roundtrips", where you fit a shorter roundtrip itinerary within another longer-duration one to get the savings on both. Last year I managed to complete a triple-nested travel plan, where an out-and-back visit to the Philippines fit within a roundtrip to Korea within a roundtrip to Australia 🦘 from China.
It is a very solid card. If I had to start over, I would definitely move into the Citi ecosystem. I don't want to open too many accounts so I'm stuck with Chase and Amex now.
I’m not a big fan of their hundred dollar back because every time I try to book a hotel where this applies there’s definitely some sort of a fee which comes up to hundred dollars for that specific hotel. Recently double cash reward citi card had a deal that if you book a hotel over 300 they give you $100 back. It’s no annual fee card. I think that’s much better.
They offered me a free year upgrade from the r+, and i chose to pay the fee in the following year. Now i just run 2x custom cashes and the premier until i know I'll redeem sometime soon, then I'll pc one back to r+ for the rebate
@@AskSebby Me and my P2 both have the Double Cash and Custom Cash. She also has the R+ and got the same offer when the Premier was only 60K so passed and waited for the Strata Premier 75K Welcome Offer. We will downgrade 1 to another Custom Cash but keep 1 as we want to get the EVA-Miles via Citi-TYP.

Since the Strata Premier is promoted as a travel card, and most no AF 2% catch-all cards charge 3% for foreign charges, I think using that simple “break even” equation is a bit misleading. There needs to be a factor for international spend in the equation since that’s the true benefit/power of the card 🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️

I’m trying to decide if it’s worth a Chase 5/24 slot! It has almost the same multipliers as the Wells Fargo Autograph but the WF has no annual fee. But not as many transfer partners. I’m trying to decide if it’s better the chase Sapphire preferred?
There's not a scenario where I would use a debit card in Japan where I could use a credit card. Too risky if there's fraud, plus foreign transaction fees.
So I got this card solely to make the points from my Citi Custom Cash transferable to transfer partners. Gas is expensive here so I just use my CCC for that and this card to make them transfer. Ends up being worth it for me.
I have no issues with the card other than it looking and feeling cheap as hell. $95 AF should carry a better looking card, o wait the Citi Premier was solid and looked premium! I’m curious Citi’s next move on premium cards I’ll product change in a heart beat if it makes sense!
There is probably wording in their terms and conditions regarding eligibility for sign up bonuses. If it is anything like other cards, you probably cannot have more than one of the same consumer version of a card and therefore cannot receive a second sign up bonus while u hold that card. You would probably need to either product change to a different Citi card or cancel the card then wait up to 24 months to reapply and receive another sign up bonus. Good luck!
