Whatever reason they have, but the chants is demonic gibberish. I studied one on one with Johnny Almendra. After visiting Cuba and seeing these drums played, he would go on to never touch one.

I guess playing 3 drums with 2 hands that are normally played by six can come off sounding less than genuine but I can assure you a lot went into transcribing so as to stay true to the rhythms. Re: trying "hard to sound African" I only strive to play music not make a political statement. Musically sound critique allows "grown-up" dialogue rather than subjective attacks on race and gender.

I recently performed in Nigeria, Africa. Where the land of Yoruba began and the origins of the Bata Drum are born. You know how many Bata players I found and I was on a mission and had access. ZERO. The Bata drums LP sells and other companies sell are known as ABERIKULA, A non sacred drum, these drums are allowed to be played by anyone man or women and can be applied to all types of music. they are meant to enrich music and not to be excluded from a musician because of gender or race.
I enjoyed it! While there is obvious discrepancies within the religious sector - those are not sanctified drums. It obvious you are a musician and I support this type of work. The very small hiccups in your the beat went almost unnoticeable and honestly I could never do better :-) i'm terrible at playing - my rhythm is in my feet and not in my hands. There are Batas of course for ceremonies these are Sacred Drums or Baptized drums and although you may be correct in that the majority are men who play them. Women like Lisette and many other are only expanding it's voice and carrying on the traditions.

Hay muchas mujeres que tocan y son tremendas tamboleras pero respetan a Añá y no se ponen con esa politiquería barata. This is a set of COMMERCIALLY FABRICATED drums. Anyone can play these drums. They have absolutely no religious value whatsoever. They are good for practicing and learning licks. What is a set of FUNDAMENTO DE AÑÁ is something TOTALLY DIFFERENT. I am an OMO AÑÁ and do not have a problem with seeing a woman play LP batas. Lissette does well for herself. She plays and sings with great flow and I imagine she worked very hard for that... And she's also beautiful, but I digress....
