I don't want to hear any of that. Dame Maggie Smith is immortal.
I'm crying now … it is such a poignant scene and Mary looks devastated. What would Downton Abbey be without the Dowager, she is magnificent!!! …. PEACE to ALL.
He’s being responsible, i was always taught that a parent who hasn’t prepared their children for their passing has been irresponsible. That may sound a little cruel but it’s true in that children at some point should know and accept the reality that it will happen sooner or later as they will be in the same place with their own children.
Matthew Martinez that is such an unnecessary and uncalled for comment? You are answering AND judging sth that hasn't been alluded to anywhere...? Do you just randomly scan YT for places to be callous?
I wasn’t judging anything, it may sound callous but that’s the problem with writing is that’s it’s easy to misunderstand. I didn’t mean for it to sound that way.
Matthew Martinez you somehow insinuated that a simple "my dad is in the same situation" somehow meant someone hadn't prepared someone for the mortality of things and took it as cue to go into a full rant how that is a parental failure IN RESPONSE to someone saying their father was terminally ill. Pardon my French, but what the duck, fude? 🤷🏻♀️
Mary has been a frightening old lady since she was19. She's the best of he grandmother, and the worst of her. What a wonderful way to spend your final precious moments together, I imagine the genuine wisdom imparted in his wonderful scene gave your mother peace. I know she rests in eternal bliss.
I cried so much on that scene. Maggie and Michelle just bright on that dynamic of grandmother and granddaughter in a very touching and relatable way...it was a passing of legacy, and a beautiful closure on the dowager's arc. If she comes back for a second movie, we'll all be delighted, but if happens of she won't, that would be the best way to finish the story of that great character. Thank you Dame Maggie for all those portrayals of this wonderful character ♥️ all love from Brazil...
Apparently she wasn’t supposed to say that. She was supposed to say she wouldn’t be around for very long but changed it to may be......so she may comeback.
How about a spin-off of Downton Abbey, set 50 years later, where Maggie Smith plays the part of Mary - a frightening old lady, keeping everyone up to the mark?
Mary is and always has been the younger Violet. She can seem selfish and harsh if you don't know her, but underneath is a heart of gold and someone who really cares about their family. And both those hearts were revealed to be softer by a Crawley- Isobel for the Dowager and Matthew for Mary.
To be honest, My reaction was exactly like Mary's. I was about to cry but suddenly Maggie said 'Don't cry' then I stopped. That moment I realized how much I love this character.

As much as I love both the portrayal of an era that Downton Abbey makes and Downton Abbey itself, I know that the Britain of that time had a lot of problems: moralism, prejudice, colonialist oppression in Africa and Asia, hypocrisy, greed and so on. Even today, Britain still reaps what was sown back then: it still is one of the Western European countries where wife-beating, gender violence, and homophobia are a daily-basis occurrence, things that should be still happening only in Third World crime-ridden poverty-stricken religion-infested undeveloped countries. So, I do not fall prey to rosy retrospection, which I believe is the trap where you set your foot in.

@@ibrahimmustafa2481 we are 1920's people's future and, honestly, I believe we live in a brighter era than they lived.
My grandmother, who reminds me so much of Maggie Smith’s character in this series and this film, passed away the day before Thanksgiving in 2016. She was so joyful and funny and witty. I will never forget how fiercely she loved us, her grandkids. She was very protective of everyone she loved. So this scene makes me cry. Oh, does it ever. 😭😭😭
I watched this last night, and this scene shocked and made me cry, I knew Maggie smith said she was tired of the role, she said it is exhausting, I believe she wanted to go out of this while she’s alive, I thinks she may retire soon. Thank you for the years on TV and film you’ve given us, your characters will still be seen for generations to come,
The look on Isobel's face at the end crushed me. You can tell she suspects something is terribly wrong that Lady Violet isn't letting on. It's going to be so sad when Isobel knows, and when Violet is gone. For everyone on the show and we fans, alike

Honestly they ended it at a great time. We got many seasons. It would've risked becoming repetitive and boring. And now we get movie sequels. I don't even think the last movie was the end I think we've got at least one more movie out of it
This scene makes me so sad! Omg Downton abbey won’t be the same without granny! It also reminds me of my grandparents in heaven and when the remaining ones go to heaven! So sad 😭
Never cried so much in a movie theater before. So much truth in this moment. So relevant to the experience of losing my grandmother to cancer. I hope I honor her memory and the part she played in who I have become.
The acting in this scene is great by both. Maggie Smith can have us crying with laughter one minute and literally on a turn, she can have us crying with sorrow. I can't imagine Downton without her 😢
As I watched this scene when I went to see the movie in September, I was crying as I watched it. It brought back too many memories of my Grandmother's final days.
