I have been to Sanibel Island and the beaches were like diamond dust. It was so beautiful.
@Ernie H Thats what youre worried about? Also, you shouldnt take shells. Shells arent gifts to you from the ocean, theyre part of ecosystems. The shellfish need them more than you do.
@@Gulfstreams calm down he’s just being positive 😂
@@Gulfstreams unless someone is throwing them back in the ocean how will some creature use them. Those beaches are inundated with shells. I am sure the ocean critters will be fine.
@Ernie H you mean the ecosystems that rarely anyone cares about? I'll take 100 shells please 😎
I as well have visited Sanibel Island, gorgeous ..omg. I am thinking about anyone who may have been on it. The small businesses. the wildlife.. the bike trails. just horrible.. I can't believe
I was at Sanibel island 10 days ago. I surprised my fiance by taking her there because I knew she would enjoy catching sea shells. Very beautiful beaches . Can't believe that I drove through that same bridge and roadways 10 days ago and now this Hurricane. Praying that all of Florida gets through this Hurricane and return to normal.
yah my mom and I were there at the beginning of this month
I felt that way about the world trade center. We were there and a few months later....gone
I've been to Sanibel Island several times, a beautiful place!

Barrier islands are coastal landforms and a type of dune system that are exceptionally flat or lumpy areas of sand that form by wave and tidal action parallel to the mainland coast.
Otherwise sold as waterfront properties. "A fool and his money..." as the cliché goes.
Probably best to leave that island to nature, and not build on it anymore
That would be way too logical and prudent though.... 😕
It is a barrier island which means storm surge sand build up also meaning do not build here or else.
Humans are stupid.
All up and down the East Coast are nothing but houses, vacation homes and " beach " towns. They are all MONEY makers. They will all rebuild, they always do. Its very sad about the loss of life but there were Evacuation orders in effect for days. There were also many Emergency Evacuation Centers available to go to. People need to learn Mother Nature has no mercy. If you are getting ready to get a Cat 4 storm, almost a 5, you need to get out, staying is just foolish.
I agree , know when to say when .
Heartbreaking. It was such a beautiful island. Prayers for the citizens.
Nature intended barrier islands like Sanibel to be washed into the sea and moved around every once in a while. Only fools build houses, roads and buildings there.
The Island will recover and we will continue to visit this beautiful Island as we do every year in January. Our love and support from Holland !
I used to visit there - LONG before they built all those homes and condos - I was so sad to see so much built up on this beautiful island - but - I never would wish this on anyone, I hope, though I rather not see so much population there, that they can recover.
I have friends that wanted to buy a house there, I talked them out of it due to hurricanes and it being particularly more vulnerable being a low lying small island. They ended up buying a place in St. Augustine, which is getting the effects too and also prone to hurricanes but they're more inland and not prone to a surge of sea water.
My sister made an cash offer on a house on Sanibel 45 days ago. They turned it down. My sister sure lucked out!
So sad. We visited here in 2018 and vowed to return in 2020, then COVID happened. We will return!!! Stay strong Florida!!!!
We’ll be here.
😀
Wait, but Jesus loves us
Sadly was supposed to go at the end of the month. That's no longer possible
Just heart breaking to see these millionaires lose their 3rd home!. 😭
Sanibel had probably the nicest beaches of anywhere I've been. Sad to see it destroyed like this.
My wife and I like to vacation in Florida. Every time we go there we think about moving there. Then we remember the hurricanes, get in our car, and drive back to the mountains of East Tennessee.
I'd definitely save it as a vacation spot and stay safe in Tennessee.
@@dunebuggie Safe? Tennessee got clobbered in 2020 by crazy tornadoes. No time to prepare for those. If you sit around trying to be perfectly safe you’ll lead a very dull life.
@@Tenebarum Actually, I live in Michigan. We just get snow. I'm totally fine with that. It's a heck of a lot cheaper to have a dull life.
In Tennessee as well. I was supposed to be on Sanibel. My mom got sick. I have family there. Sanibel folks staying with my Ocala folks. Haven't heard anything from my Fort Myers folks.
@@dunebuggie Blizzards aren’t exactly safe. But I’ll leave you to it.
I’m in tears. Sanibel/ Captiva, I have so many good memories from trips there. It’s literally gone. I don’t think it’s fixable.
I’m sorry to all of those who lived there.
My favorite place on earth. Spent 10 days in July this year. Breaks my heart too see the damage. 🙏🏼 for all the ppl in Fla.
Hello i'm from Florida. Thankfully i did not lose power and no one in my family was injured. However due to flooding it destroyed my front and back porch. We stored many of our family history in a shack but now it gone. We lost our memories
None of what they showed was Sanibel Island. They panned from the causeway toward the east to the Ft Myers area where the causeway starts.
No one has access to the island
They also failed to mention that Ft Meyers came through pretty well. I remember when they reported that Cudjo Key and Everglades City were destroyed by Irma. Both places adapted and bounced back.
@@thrasherx2k1 there is footage from another chopper showing Sanibel after showing the causeway. Showed the whole island followed by closer shots of many buildings, all of which were still standing.
@@Tenebarum Ft Myers Beach was obliterated. Ft Myers is a separate town from Ft Myers Beach.
@@MaverickGrabber71 got the link?
We used to vacation at Sanibel 40 years ago. We rented a 2 bedroom bungalow with a living room and kitchen for $150.00 a week, out near the wildlife refuge. We quit going once it became commercialized and over-touristed, like everywhere in Florida now.
Up the coast at Seaside I remember a plaque in the bathroom. It read in part: "Over the last 100 years, this area has been hit with a major hurricane on average every 10 years." That quelled my desire to buy a vacation home in Florida.
Setting aside the argument of causation, be it natural or human activity, data shows a significant increase in the size and intensity of cyclones worldwide. The percentage of hurricanes that reach category 4 or 5 is increasing. They are also moving slower, thereby increasing the amount of damage to areas in their path. Expect to see more Ians and Katrinas in the decades to come.
Best wishes from Brasil! Our thoughts are with you all, stay strong U.S.A.!
Just pray for all the people in Florida, stay strong
If only prayers actually did something...
@@Yupitsmeagain2 Exactly. I doubt most people saying they pray do, but if they do, what a waste of time.
You know that when you move there it is susceptible to hurricanes and thunderstorms as well.
I thought Jesus loves us for all the destruction we brought to other countries and specially the Middle East and killing innocent people.
I mean are you sure we still have to pray?
I an thankful for my wife and daughter and what I have but I honestly take it for granted too often.
Hoping for the best for the people in Florida and elsewhere.
I think that’s a very healthy. Genuine thing to say. I mirror your sentiment. It’s so easy to get caught up in future plans that one forgets to appreciate what they have in front of them.
Was just there a few weeks ago walking on the beach, riding around looking at the beautiful island. This is sad to see and hope and pray for the people there and Florida.
Literally none of that video was Sanibel Island. It’s the causeway out to the island and the mainland road leading up to the causeway.
There is a reason for that...decomposing bodies on the street.
Utter bullshit.
My father lived on Sanibel for over 20 years, used to visit all the time. Very sad to see. This was worse than Charlie back in 2004.
That's a huge amount of destruction in a small area. Some comments here predict things on Sanibel will be functional in months. I see years of work, when you factor in, so much of the state has seen this kind of damage. Good luck to all affected.
Central Fort Myers here. We are in a Condo building on the fourth floor. It beat the hell out of us knocked out windows etc. It just would not leave. Shook the building took the roof off. No water no power. Just stayed all day from morning till night. Thrashed us. But nevertheless it was a beautiful storm though. Expensive though. Even cost lives. That’s expensive indeed.
A friend of mine recently moved to Port Charlotte to be near her family. Praying for them and everyone in Florida.🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Hang in there!
Happy you made it through alive.
Is that typical for a hurricane to sit and hoover over the same area? Seems weird.

Many did not. They ignored the mandatory evacuations. The coast guard has been seen rescuing people off that island which IMO those people should have to pay for it. These are not poor people that were stuck. They thought they were bigger than any storm and now help that could go to other people is being misused because of their selfishness. If it were me, I'd tell them to find a boat and make it back themselves. They have the money so rescue should be charging any of them that ignored the orders.
@Ernie H That island is small and is mostly wealthy people on it. Either way, they ignored the mandatory evacuations and CHOSE to stay.
This is horribly horrendous. May God be with these people that have lost their homes and everything they own. We lived in North Port Florida for many years in survive several hurricanes while living there. It was so unnerving we sold the house on five acres and move back to New England. At least in New England after a bad snow storm your house is still standing. Our hearts go out to these people they're in our thoughts and prayers.

どうかご無事で
I went to Sanibel Island one month ago... this is so sad. :(
I grew up spending the first weekend of every summer on Sanibel, one of my Sisters has the Timeshare we used now. This level of damage is reminiscent of when Andrew hit Homestead in 92 (which we where there for as kids), fortunately as far as the bridge goes it looks like the bridge elements held up and it's just the land masses and roadways that need rebuilt, so restoring access should be much easier then when the bridge had to be rebuilt.
This is very sad for me. My favorite vacation spot was Captiva Island. It was a paradise compared to other places in Florida. I don't even know if any people on that tiny island survived if they did not evacuate in time. No good news these days, miracles a few and far between.
THIS IS NOT SANIBEL....THIS IS THE CAUSEWAY HEADED BACK TO FT MYERS>>>THE HOUSE BURNING IS IN FT MYERS. Why are they not doing a flyover of Sanibel, they show the causeway and then fly back to Ft Myers. Very odd
I live in Altamonte springs FL, we still have no power today at noon on the first of Oct. It's has been out for 58 hrs now. Since 2:00 AM on Thursday. Charged my phone up in my car. Hoping to god it comes back. My neighborhood is flooded and this is all very devastating. And even other people here have it worse. I see this and it makes me cry. I've lived in Florida for 32 years. And this one hurts more for some reason. And we're just down here trying to grind through now. It may be a bit yet. But we're FloStrong!
So sad. We went on vacation there very recently and it’s beautiful
Not anymore
Oh wow 😳. Just thinking about the amount of work to do is mine blowing, but the people of Florida is strong and will get over this set back.
I don’t think God wants us there.
i feel so much for the sanibel/captiva residents.. its so crazy how bad the damage is
People can’t continue to build in these areas and not expect this to happen.
They know.
Who said they did? They know the risk. It’s a vacation spot, it’s off season, and anyone who wanted to evacuate was able to. Some stubborn people ride it out. Their choice.
Stupid people will continue to build there and act surprised each time their house washes away.
Nature simply reclaims what's hers...I feel for all the folks there..I have friends on that island..can't get in touch with them..he is the most popular musician/performer in that area...for decades..hope he's ok..
Such a beautiful place to live by the water and it must feel like paradise. You can go many many years without a hurricane but unfortunately this happened and these hurricanes are getting stronger and stronger. I pray for these people I pray that they can rebuild their homes and I pray they can come together as a community and do what they need to do to get back together God bless them all

In my opinion it's a bit strange we even built that roadway like that. Knowing it's susceptible to hurricanes, large waves and whatever an ocean can throw at a small island that's barely even there.
There's simply no way this wasn't thought of before Ian destroyed it. Money makes humans do some weird things.

A barrier island, or shorefront property of any kind can be a wonderful, scenic, romantic place to live. However forces of nature don't care how much you love your home or the area you live in. Forces of nature just are, and they JUST DON'T CARE. When you choose a homesite, choose wisely.

exactly
Q: what did the hamburglar say when he visited Sanibel Island?
A: “rubble rubble…”
WTF are they building their house out of, shit´s flipped 90 degrees
That fire looks random. Like someone wanted insurance too
gas lines are still active, and some areas that are flooded still have power.
Insurance in places like that is prohibitively expensive if available at all. When we vacation on the panhandle of Florida at the beach, we rent houses and I talk to neighbors. Almost all state they have no home insurance. More than likely there was a gas (propane probably) leak that got ignited.
This video about Sanibel devastation does not have any video of the actual island. This is all McGregor Blvd on the Fort Myers side and the bridge / causeway.
So sad. We love visiting Sanibel and the Ding Darling Wildlife area.
This is so sad! That bridge leads to the beach. There was boats there was homes surrounded in the bridge across the bridge we're probably owned shops and a dairy Queen along with parking for the beach. I lived 10 mins away...
