Great video and thanks. We went with the CX50 as it was the only hybrid we could get without an excessive waiting period so..... wondering how much of a factor this would be for folks?
You are the only person that says the Honda drives better/crisper than the Mazda (my wife has the Honda and I have test driven the Mazda a lot and will be getting one. The Honda is an absolute bore to drive. It’s funny you degrade the Mazda for the CvT .. yet Honda has a CVT as well. Also first thought the CRV seats are better but I took my wife’s in a long drive and the lack of supportive seats were very uncomfortable
Any comment regarding all wheel drive performance? I have no complaints with my 2018 CRV all wheel drive. I understand the RAV power train isnt so good on the ice.. Thanks for the video.
Solid Video - grreat comparative Info. There are a few issues/features lacking with The CRV Hybrid Touring model: Should have a HUD; should have a Power Steering Wheel adjustment working in unison with the Seat/Mirror settings; and Ventilated Seats !! In my area of NY Suburbia, I see CRVs all over the place, rare sightings of the Mazda CX-50. If the Mazda lacks that Zoom-Zoom of other models, despite niicer interior colors and Graphics, that would detract me from the Mazda and lean me towards selecting the Honda.
Up with the Honda CRV Sport Touring. I got a tire puncture but had already bought one of those slime Fix-A-Flat kits for $20. I pulled over in the nearest parking lot, I found the puncture yanked out the object and stuffed one of those Tire seal plugs. Refilled the tie with air and I was on my way. It's easier for a man to do
Thanks for your review. I do believe that Honda is having some problems with fuel filters? And other things for reliability. I always liked honda but seem to do alittle down hill to save money. Honda not having a spare tire is big. But, but you can get a regular spare tire not a dough nut thru after party vendor. So if I decide I would want a honda, would look into getting one spare tire if on long road trip. It does have its own cover too. Also have heard cross trek is going hybird and the cx5 is going hybird too, along with the civic and accord. So there are a few other choices and will wait for cx5 and crosstrek to come out before decision and test driving all. thanks
Honda has no spare tire, so it’s a NO for me. Only negative to the Mazda is a tight back seat. We’ll be looking at the CX50 hybrid or new Forester Hybrid coming. 👍🏻
It’s gonna be an interesting year in hybrid SUVs. We’ve got the new generation RAV4 and the Mazda CX 5 and possibly a few more. If Toyota can knock it out of the park, the RAV4 could become car of the year in 2025-6. Cheers.
I test drove the CX-50 couple yrs ago and while it drove well, it felt very firm (possibly due to torsion rears). With the hybrid powertrain and loss of G-Vec+, I assumed it’s not the same Mazda driving dynamics. I preferred the balanced ride by the CRV (a bit softer but also very compliant). I ended up with the CRV hybrid and happy with it!
I don't believe that the Honda hybrid has an eCVT. I believe it is usually a series hybrid. Essentially an electric car (electric motor is more powerful than the gasoline engine) and the gasoline engine runs a generator to maintain the battery for all conditions except highway cruising. For highway cruising the gasoline engine can clutch in to directly drive the drive axle. This is more efficient than creating the electricity to immediately use it. And this is direct drive with only one ratio (one gear or one speed transmission). Now if you floor it (to accelerate) the engine will unclutch and go to a high rpm to make electricity and the more powerful electric motor will accelerate the car. No eCVT involved. A negative for Honda is no port injection. Gasoline engines need port injection to keep the intake valves clean. Toyota uses both injection types. I hope Honda adds port injection so I can consider the CRV. And a spare tire option would be nice. Even without the spare tire I still want the jack and tool. I will also consider RAV4 and both Crowns.
CX50 seats are brutal. Backbreaking. Useless on long drives. 60 minutes maximum. That alone gives the CRV the easy win. Panoramic sunroof is a huge negative. Heat generating greenhouse. Avoid at all costs. 😢 Great review. Clear communication and accurate information. A vehicle score would be useful. ✅
Your stated weight difference between the vehicles is not correct: The Mazda Canada website says the CX-50 Hybrid weighs 1,808 kg. The Honda Canada website says the CR-V Hybrid weighs 1,785 kg. It is the Honda CR-V LX 2WD that weighs 1,583 kg.

When you do the mileage math it is worth getting a hybrid if you do more city driving than highway driving. If you do longer distance driving then it may make more sense to get a regular gas powered non hybrid engine. You do not gain any mileage advantage driving a hybrid on the highway. Regardless, Mazda for me first.
On the top trim comparison, with the $2K price diff, Honda currently offers $1K off via Honda bonus plus you can buy them at MSRP while CX-50 hybrids are charged $750CAD additional as dealer admin fee and since new with Toyota powertrain, unlikely to offer any discounts. I did the math and diff at most was only $500! Once you factor in resale value, the Honda comes out better in long run!

When I was young, I chose cars based on how they looked from the outside. Now that I am old I choose cars based on how well I can see the outside. 🙃

The Mazda CX-50 Hybrid has a physical spare tire.
The Honda CR-V Hybrid does not.
Having a spare tire is important to many.
Honda has no spare tire, so it’s a NO for me. Only negative to the Mazda is a tight back seat. We’ll be looking at the CX50 hybrid or new Forester Hybrid coming. 👍🏻

Seats were quite comfortable for me with both vehicles.
Seats are not great in the cx-50 and what’s with the ugly black plastic cladding? It would look great if they toned that down a bit
I found the CX-50 seats to be so firm that they were hard and uncomfortable. I loved the rest of the car.

Tried both, bought the Mazda, Love the seats. Just did a 18 hour drive so, subjective I guess.

insurance for CRV is mugh higher. EXL price is same as GT and doesnt even have all the features like 360 camera, headsup display etc which GT trim has
