- The Four Tops are an American vocal quartet from Detroit, Michigan who helped to define the city's Motown sound of the 1960s. The group's repertoire has included soul music, R&B, disco, adult contemporary, doo-wop, jazz, and show tunes.
Founded as the Four Aims, lead singer Levi Stubbs, Abdul "Duke" Fakir, Renaldo "Obie" Benson and Lawrence Payton remained together for over four decades, performing from 1953 until 1997 without a change in personnel. The Four Tops were among a number of groups, including the Miracles, the Marvelettes, Martha and the Vandellas, the Temptations, and the Supremes, who established the Motown Sound heard around the world during the 1960s. They were notable for having Stubbs, a baritone, as their lead singer, whereas most other male and mixed vocal groups of the time were fronted by tenors.
The group was the main male vocal group for the highly successful songwriting and production team of Holland-Dozier-Holland, who crafted a stream of hit singles for Motown. These included two Billboard Hot 100 number-one hits for the Tops: "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)" in 1965 and "Reach Out I'll Be There" in 1966. The group continued to have chart singles into the 1970s, including the million-seller "Ain't No Woman" (1973).
The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990 and into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1999. In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked them #79 on its list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.

TopPop was the first regular dedicated pop music TV show in the Dutch language area. Dutch broadcaster AVRO aired the programme weekly, from 1970 to 1988. Presenter Ad Visser hosted the show for its first fifteen years.

Be still my heart when I see these Four Brothers of Motown sing these songs together! The best of the fab 4 Tops playing across the pond from Detroit City in my 1960's! No other Motown Group was as Loyal as these 4 Brothers from the Hood at their time! They are my favorite because my hero Levi Stubbs would not give into money and to sell his Detroit Brothers of High School and of Sound of the band out! I Still send emails to Duke in 2023 to thank my 4 Tops bothers for all the love in music they gave me!
This song just came back into my head after all these years! Had to come here and play it again! Makes you realise how poor today's music is. 😍
Remembering when I was 16 and singing this song in our living room
When I was young I went into my local record store and asked for Don't Walk Away by General Johnson. The shop assistant wrapped it up and took my money.
When I got home I was disappointed to find he'd given me The Four Tops song of the same name.
Luckily I loved this song just as much so wasn't too unhappy.

How many members were they?. Such a great song, Once heard it stays in your head. So sad such wonderful talent, only as far as I know. Only one me ber left. When I was a child, I used to play the Tops album again and again, while my older Blister was at work. I actually saw them in concert, in Sheffield UK. My work rates and I, got so carried away harmonising to songs the women behind us, told us to shut up!. "'I've come to listen to them not you''. I did manage to go to the front of the stage and shake their hands. Afterwards, II never washed my hands for weeks. True ledge ds. Dining from the heart to ours.
