Evil is rampant in Crime City. Crush out crime to bring back law and order!
"CRIME CITY " is an action game released by TAITO in 1989.
Crime City is rampant with evil organizations and criminal elements. Serious crime is an everyday occurrence. With the local police no longer able to cope, two plain clothes officers are called in: Tony Gibson and Raymond Brody.
Players take control of this duo to solve a series of crimes, defeating the criminals using with a variety of weapons and actions!
The "Arcade Archives" series has faithfully reproduced many classic Arcade masterpieces.
Players can change various game settings such as game difficulty, and also reproduce the atmosphere of arcade display settings at that time. Players can also compete against each other from all over the world with their high scores.
Please enjoy the masterpiece that built a generation for video games.
The options menu and manual are available in Japanese, English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish.

The only break from the action are the gallery shooting stages a la TAD Corporation (Cabal, Blood Bros.) and Seibu Kaihatsu (Empire City 1931, Lead Angle, Dynamite Duke). The two-player simultaneous mode was the only other standout, at least prior to Rolling Thunder 2 (1991) while none of the Shinobi games had that. You also respawn upon death or after using a continue, so that also takes away the strategic approach. In a sense, the only game Crime City can really compare to is DECO's Sly Spy: Secret Agent (also 1989). The other aspect Crime City has it going for is its sheer insanity. Dobermans braking out of crates and barrels, anyone? It's also a Taito game without any staff credits; indeed the ending only shows the cast of characters.
In usual Taito fashion, the ENGRISH is ridiculous to the point Crime City might as well be a modern-day Western crime fighting movie. At least the enemy sprites are all different, what with fancy mobsters and masked bank robbers to name a few. Depending on the DIP switches, the high score screen has players create their own message by shooting on the wall, but there's also a traditional three-letter name entry option due to Taito's foresight. Unlike Chase H.Q., Crime City was only reissued on Taito Egret II Mini Arcade Memories Vol. 3 and Hamster's Arcade Archives in 2023-2024. *Go for a kill-time at the Taito Crime Crushing Caravan!*

*Let's go for a kill-time!* The 1989 release Crime City is a spinoff of Taito's arcade racer Chase H.Q. (1988), an action game starring Tony Gibson and Raymond Broady. It's Totally NOT Lethal Weapon meets Namco's Rolling Thunder and Sega's Shinobi, also predating Konami's Surprise Attack by one year. Like the former, you have a health meter, so running into an enemy takes down a block, but getting shot is an instant death. Your ammo is limited, though enemies drop extra refills, as well as powerful weapons like machine guns and three-way shotguns. Crime City has its own foibles like losing your default pistol after getting a different weapon, and once you're out of ammo, you're stuck with close-range punches. The stage designs aren't as strategic and lack the two-tiered levels that let you jump between floors (even Data East's Dragon Ninja (1988) had those!), and there aren't any hostages to rescue for power-ups or bonus points.

Although there is an element of hostage rescue with some enemies who hold a young girl named Emily hostage. If her captor is successfully eliminated, you'll be rewarded with a health bonus, but if Emily is killed, Tony and Raymond will be unable to move for a second (perhaps to lament on their failure to rescue her). The 2nd stage boss named Richard will have a similar mechanic as he takes Catty Skylark hostage. But unlike Emily, Catty can't be accidentally killed.
