  • How did Western governments get to the point where major decisions are made by and for large corporate monopolies? Ben Norton is joined by political economist Radhika Desai to discuss neoliberalism and the myth of the free market.
This is based on chapter 6 of Radhika's book "Capitalism, Coronavirus and War". You can download it for free here: geopoliticaleconomy.com/2023/...

Great comment. Still, it only happened to be noticed by you in the 1990’s. In reality this failed model started in 1492, after the consumption conquest of the first country of Iberian peninsula, Al-Andalus, and the fake “discovery” and the beginning of the conquest invasion and epistemic killing of the cultures of the “Americas”. It was the beginning not of an economical model but of the civilization model, the so called “modernity”. If you haven’t yet, I invite you to check a much better study of it with Berkeley University professor Ramon Grosfoguel.

Grace Blakeley has recently written a great book about this topic called "Vulture Capitalism" and I highly recommend it. The term "regulatory capture" is wholly inadequate in describing what has actually taken place.
The laws of incorporation that were passed in 1863 put the US government squarely in the pocket of bankers and robber barrons. Even FDR, the "savior" didn't take the power to print free money from bankers. Printing unlimited money allows you to purchase unlimited power and influence. We all live in the results of that.

You know who tried that? The USSR, Vietnam, China, Cuba, North Korea, Iraq, Libya and Venezuela.
I assume you know enough history to know that central planning doesn't work. Collectivism in state leads to authority, poverty, economic fall down, lack of resources, resource mismanagement and ALWAYS indoctrination in education and culture.
You can make all of this free, with high taxes, but you'll need the money for that, which is money you WILL NEVER HAVE if you decided to let the stat-....cough cough.....the 'people' in charge, which will lead to allllll sorts of economic fallacies. Everyone will be entrapped for one job, for one purpose and you won't have any option and you must serve the state like a slave or have the state take away things from you.
Your disguise of "fairness" is what led to many's suffering and demise, what you think of as noble is why we have inflation, high taxes, terrible options and state-backed monopolies ran by the elites, the very people you will give power to.
You want to make scarce resources free? Well, do they cost time and labour and land and sweat to make? Then it's not free, and if you still want it free, then ALLOW PEOPLE TO OWN THINGS FIRST!

Almost every day I see this here in the Philippines. Water, electric and telecommunications utilities getting more expensive. Most of all you cannot afford to get sick here because hospitals are mostly privately owned. If you don't have money for down payment for immediate medical attention then you die or your medical conditions worsen.

Most of the bureaucracy has been contracted out to large consultancy companies like pwc, Deloitte and kpmg. America owns our means of production 😢

Given the persisting global economic crisis, it's essential for individuals to focus on diversifying their income streams independent of governmental reliance. This involves exploring options such as stocks, gold, silver, and digital currencies. Despite the adversity in the economy, now is an opportune moment to contemplate these investment avenues.

The pathway to substantial returns doesn't solely rely on stocks with significant movements. Instead, it revolves around effectively managing risk relative to reward. By appropriately sizing your positions and capitalizing on your advantage repeatedly, you can progressively work towards achieving your financial goals. This principle applies across various investment approaches, whether it be long-term investing or day trading.

Great talk, but a few points of modification I think are needed.
I'd argue violence in many forms from slavery to workers rights attacks, safety and representation, to repression of freedom of speech and thought, the ability to have fair acces to the use of the judicial system or have it restricted by lack of resources or representation of you class, to armies to facilitate extraction abroad and the preservation of the state, these all can contribute or detract from the value created in a society.
Ben made the point of a highly educated person sweeping floors being productivity and wealth destruction, but I'd argue that the same applies to many more fields. I heard John Ralston Saul mention once in a talk that he was warned by some short remark, hi to all listeners by a diplomat, that I'd be wise to not reveal to much on a certain zoom talk. So the NSA listening in, was directly causing self censorship, and when talking about a future politically sensitive book publication, thus directly causing economic and wealth harm. This might seem trivial, but such things compound till the point you have to start building walls to keep people in, which would represent complete collapse of wealth creation.
Racism destroys wealth (*) , Top Chinese scientists at US companies and universities are resigning their posts and returning to China.
Healthcare is off course and obvious and discussed although not taken seriously, part of society where there is wealth and income destruction. But it is not alone, the Corporate Media, the culture it spreads might heighten desire to earn and spend more, but it discourages serious political debate, and plunges people into chaos and depression to the point of dis-functionality, and destroys wealth.
On the other side something which may or may not even be very capitalist or socialist driven is that knowledge itself is a huge driver of wealth generation. It allows more options.
I came across an article once and because my girlfriend is a translator sort of made a mental note of it, it discussed a phenomenon named by the author The vocabulary Explosion, I haven'tbeen able to find it again, but anyway, the jest, at the time of William Shakespeare there were an estimated 14.000 words in the English language, in 1850 something like 40.000, now 180.000 - 1 million.
This very clearly to me represents the complexity of a society, my argument to her was that Pilgrims in medieval times likely were more multilingual simple because the languages were proportionally much smaller. And well teasing a bit the original latin as spoken by Julius Ceasar was probably limited to just 3 - 5.000 words.
This has off course been going on from well before there was even the concept of Capitalism.
And points to the fabulous wealth creation by education itself.

    • $14bn for the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, a US Department of State-led funding programme that helps train Ukraine’s military and provides equipment and advisory initiatives;
    • More than $11bn will fund current US military operations in the region, enhance the capabilities of the Ukrainian military, and boost intelligence collaboration between Kyiv and Washington; and

The Greenspan put was a monetary policy response to financial crises that Alan Greenspan, former chair of the Federal Reserve, exercised beginning with the crash of 1987.[1][2][3] Successful in addressing various crises, it became controversial as it led to periods of extreme speculation led by Wall Street investment banks overusing the put's repurchase agreements (or indirect quantitative easing) and creating successive asset price bubbles.[1][4] The banks so overused Greenspan's tools that their compromised solvency in the global financial crisis of 2007-2008 required Fed chair Ben Bernanke to use direct quantitative easing (the Bernanke put).[1][5][6] The term Yellen put was used to refer to Fed chair Janet Yellen's policy of perpetual monetary looseness (i.e. low interest rates and continual quantitative easing).
