I really thought the "dark secret" of their happiness was gonna be a Midsommar sacrifice ritual to the Gods
Oh, we do, but we sacrifice those who dare speak of it, so he probably didnt wanna take any risks...
Midsommar is specifically Swedish, though. It is celebrated in Sweden, and by the Swedish-speaking minority in Finland. It does not explain how the other Nordic countries got their happiness.
Mind over matter.
Johan Danielsson how do they get happiness from it???
@@Clean82 Celebrations are fun... at least in most cases, I guess. My point, however, is that midsummer is not the explaination.
As a Dane; my thoughts on the correlation between the happiness index and the suicide rate is that once you hit a dark spot, it makes it immensely harder to cope when the general population around you are so happy and content. It isolates you even further from society, when your peers do not seem to relate to your struggles. You end up in these scenarios where you are being accidently patronized by friends and loved ones, who try their best by suggesting various solutions to a problem that does not seem solveable. For instance, you could be getting the classic: "When I'm feeling down sometimes, I do pilates! You should totally try that!" Which further reinforces the idea that you're stuck with this mental state, because other people can whisk away the grasp of depression with a simple distraction. Would this be different in another country? Perhaps not; but you wouldn't have to search as long to find other people with the same depressed outlook on the world, and in doing so will form some sort of connection to society that will at least sate your need for communication and belonging.
It is same in every country. Society still does not understand depression. Depression is not just a "prolonged bad mood" as too many people tend to believe. Depression is a physical brain disease; it literally alters way certain neurotransmitters are behaving. It fucks up balance of your brain and renders it unable to react correctly to serotonin and other "happiness" related chemicals. It changes your perception of world and reality. Doing pilates or any kind of physical exercise won't change the fact your brain is not working properly.
Had bad mood for last 2 weeks in fall season? That might pass. Had barely any motivation to live for last 6 months? You need to look for help man. It is not normal. And anyone who thinks its normal is either stupid or ignorant.
@@ranedrane1076 That is an oversimplification. Depression can be related to a physical problem, but it can also be psychological. And not be caused by brain chemistry at all. You can be depressed without a "brain disease". And I think that kind of thinking is very dangerous. That is exactly how you end up trying to solve someone's life long problems with shoving pills down their throat, when all they needed was getting their life sorted out.
If it's a chemical imbalance triggered depression people can suggest all they want until they are blue in the face. It's frustrating but in some ways it's easier to overcome around people who DONT know you are depressed. They treat you as though your of a normal disposition and you begin to believe it and sooner or later it's over. Don't feed the fire by coddling someone you know is depressed. Be cool and carry it like they are ok, i had to stop hanging around people who knew or figured out how I was feeling to finally overcome it.
As a fellow Dane, I don't think that is the only reason as in many other countries you are even more alone as it is very taboo in many of those countries and not as much in Denmark. I think the bigger contributor is that we have so much wealth and no life or death struggles that we now have much more time to go around thinking existential thoughts that could lead to depression. Just a thought
It's pretty much how it is, we are tough, because we need to be tough, other wise we wouldn't survive. Because you need a good education, you need all the newest gadgets, and things. We have a real issue with the amount of loans people take each month, since we don't care about the intrest rates, we only care about "having" fun. We really don't think about how other people feel. We only really think about ourselvs. Like the youth drinking almost every weekend, the amount of people i know who think it's normal to drink a bottle of vodka at a party is enermous. Because we think of it as an escape. The nicotine addiction almost everyone has. It's impressive.

Hi Thoughty2
Thank you for a great channel!
I'm from Denmark. I agree with a lot of your points about why we get a higher score on happiness. And why it might be misleading. But I can't quite make out, if you are aware, but the Janteloven was made as a sarcastic commentary on some of the tendencies the author Axel Sandemose observed in the danish and norwegian societies.... in 1933. We do not believe they are rules to live by, they are more a guideline on what to avoid, because we definitely have a strong tendency to follow them. Much has changed in the Scandinavian countries since the thirties, so the Janteloven is not as dominant today. People often do desire and do buy material luxury goods and do aspire to advance in their careers, but it is still seen as bad taste to brag about it. I do believe that our social security system is a very big part of the reason danes and other scandinavians feel happy.
We have a lower crime rate, because you really don’t have to steal to survive, and therefore we have more trust in each other.
This part about the social security, I think all societies could make in to their own version, if they wanted. But it is difficult to make the transition, as you have to raise minimum wages for people to afford a higher tax. Incidentally, most people in Denmark only pay between 40% and 50% tax. But the percentage rises, with increasing income. So if you have a high income, you pay a higher percentage. That’s the theory anyway
Have a great day and stay safe!
With kind regards
Thomas
Hi Thomas its remarkable how you think about the perception of happiness , I am a mexican and also my country is consider in a higher rates but our country conditions are way far the same

4) I got tired of fact-checking this video just after 3:23 and left.......
Yeah, he also misunderstood the word sisu. It means more like having guts and persistence to overcome obstacles.
There was also quite a shallow conclusion of how the trust culture is based on ethnicity. We have had immigration as long as we have existed, and it has not changed the way these countries work. It seemed bit weird too to hear about how much we pay for the system when we get so much more in return than in other countries. Free college education and top-quality healthcare for example. Maybe we trust each other and the system because we actually can. Maybe US simply needs more trustworthy people.
Depends on your work. I have a job where I could work at home and leave early any given day for what ever reason (obviously I would have to make up the lost hours elsewhere). Having a flexible job is perhaps not as rare in Denmark as elsewhere, but how he is presenting it; that it's the case from all Danes aren't very true to reality at all. Though perhaps relatively common compared to elsewhere, it's still overall not that common.
He also has no clue what Janteloven means.

Jeg kan ikke være mere enige.
As a finn I would like to say that yes, we are content with our lives and that does make us happy. Greed and trying to be better than your neighbour doesn't make happy people... it makes stressed out people. Finns also pay a lot of taxes to ensure that ALL the people get all the benefits of it. Coverment pays us unemployment fees, health covering, education, and so on. This is the system that was made after we won our independence from Russia and we had to pay them back all the war reparations. We united as people, made it happen. And what I understand is Finland is the only country to have actually payed those in full. Rest of the countries got leniency on their paybacks.
Thank you for taking an educated approach to this consortium of fools!!!! I forget 🇸🇪 Sweden and 🇷🇺 Russia are shoulder to shoulder with one another...and that the price of freedom is often l lingering and costly. 🇫🇮 Finland pays dearly, too....
Thank God that you understand what you are buying when you pay exorbitant tax dollars......😇💖
Trying to "be better than the next man" is an exaggeration from the past. What most people are trying to do, American and similar, are be better off than they started, onfen under governments that do anything from less to the exact opposite of what your does. It's about making your own way because that's literally all we've got. Otherwise we'd be living on the streets, with a government that's not trustworthy and only wants to milk us for their own ends. Move up in the world to gain such benefits and enjoy some of whats out there.
If that's supposed to be "wrong" than we're all a bit wrong.
Try telling that to an average American. I’m guessing their response would be negative and something about communism
@@troyarrington5492 Might Be True that they think that, but thats their loss.
Your comparing apples to potatoes. Finland is home to 5 million people as opposed to 330 million in the US. Not to mention, we have a government that takes 40 percent from the highest tax bracket currently and look what we have to show for it. A country that needs to up their debt ceiling cause our incompetent government can’t handle the trillions of tax payer dollars. Have you been to a DMV lately? Have you worked for the government and noticed how SLOW everything is? You want those same people in charge of your healthcare and education? No fucking thank you. I’d rather have a choice and the government not touch it. The US government is ass cheeks. And yes, I’m going to refer to communism, because look how wonderful the “system” worked for Venezuela, Cuba, etc. all poverished and currently more deaths are attributed to lack of food and proper health care. They were sold the same pipe dream.
You make it sound like we don't have social classes in Scandinavia. We certainly do, but the difference between piss poor and stinkingly rich is just not as great as the US.

Being a dane and raised on janteloven, I'd like to point out the rarely thought about the fact it goes both ways. We dont think we're better than others as you rightly said, but we dont think anyone's better than us either. So it's kind of a weird dichotomy of selfdecprication and arrogange.
Yes, as opposed to Hispanic cultures where you get the opposite extremes: grandiose macho showiness among the upper class, and shockingly tender and vulnerable realism among the lower class.
Even though Aksel Sandemose meant it as a criticism of island life in Denmark, i've come to appreciate the idea of "don't be a dick about it" i certainly don't see it as this overbearing collectivist mentality (maybe he mistook it for concensus culture?)

@@omega1231 The confusion really comes from "Swedish Socialism", a diplomatic game from the Cold War meant to placate the Soviet Union. Stockholm cultivated this extensive myth that their welfare state was actually part of some elaborate Quasimarxist Communist Strategy for creating a perfect Collectivist society, based upon some supposed overbearing collectivist "real nature" of Scandinavians. The intent was to make it worth the USSR's while to leave Sweden alone in exchange for giving the Kremlin some exceedingly undeserved positive press from how well (non-existent) Communism worked in Sweden.
Sandemose himself was really just trying to create a charming pastoral comedy with a little bit of farcical social commentary about human nature & the difficulties of small town life thrown in, it was the Swedish School System that decided to turn his creation in to a monster.

A few things:
1. The Nordic countries don't rank that high on the list of suicides per capita. Finland (#32), Sweden (#51) Norway (#74) and Denmark (#89). Additionally, some countries are able to keep better records than others, and that could lead to underreporting from a number countries.
2. Janteloven is nothing anyone really takes seriously and it was actually written satirically nearly 100 years ago. True, Danes don't like to brag about their accomplishments to others, but isn't that just good manners?
3. You're definitely right that not all Danes aspire to own McMansions. Why would you always need to try and have a bigger house than your neighbor? Someone is always going to have a bigger house than you, so that seems a bit silly.
4. Danes are very patriotic so they feel pressure to tell everyone they're happy? That's an interesting theory, but do you have any statistics to support it? No one holds a candle to the US when it comes to patriotism, but they never come close to the top of the list.
Edit: I realize this is the internet and all... but maybe we could all try to be nice to each other anyway?

@@nunchuckdaddy6417
True. I wasn't in charge of the survey. I was just one of the group out surveying as part of a course study. Irresponsible is a bit over the top. It effected no one. It was just to prove a point the psychology tutor was making. It's why a lot of people see a professional about their mental health. Sometimes it's just easier to talk to a stranger. Just getting stuff off their chest without any judgment.
It was donkeys years ago and I can't remember the exact results, but I remember the results being conclusive by quite a shocking margin. I'm not sure that having a few mentally ill candidates out of 2k would've have made enough difference.
It was interesting though. Hadn't thought about it until I saw this video. 👍
In the mid late 90s I lived in northern Sweden for about 3 years. I loved it! Even though I was unemployed, broke, playing music to survive, it was great. Great people and a very beautiful country. I lived in a town called Örnsköldsvik, about 500 kilometers south of the arctic circle. Summer was great. In July, sun all day and night but in winter, dark forever.
It sounds beautiful to me. My health and breathing are better in colder weather. I am always overheated like my body has no thermostat. I'm antisocial and dont like being disturbed. I am never lonely but always alone. I like my life the way it is, but Finland sounds lovely.
Ö-vik is only considered northern Sweden if you think of Stockholm as the middle of the country. If you actually take into consideration the country's northern and southern borders, Örnsköldsvik is in the middle of the country.
Sweden is the best

"Endless winter"
That's a funny one. I live in Denmark and I haven't seen a flake of snow this whole winter. I do live in the south, though. I guess the north has probably had a few snowy days. Also, gotta say, I don't feel like janteloven is quite as pervasive as you put it. Perhaps it's just because I'm used to it, but I don't see people being criticized for desiring a bigger house or a nicer car.
I think two things about "janteloven":
1. it is an attempt at "moral philosophy" in teaching solidarity and community and is, within reason, A GOOD THING!
2. it is ALSO though, what rich people in Scandinavia DISAPPROVINGLY refer to when they would like a piece of "the American Dream" (being INSANELY richer than their neighbor), but people around them frown at the morality of that desire… so these «wannabe Americans» "paint the devil on the wall" (Norwegian expression) by describing Scandinavian solidarity as JEALOUSY of success
I say: don't let them destroy our Scandinavian ways by slandering it! We are not "jealous" of success, but we rather fear jealousy as motivation for success!
Big class conflict is a recipe for disaster in a community

Janteloven is definitely misrepresented in this video. "Suppresses the potential greatness of an individual". No, what the hell? First of all, janteloven is pretty much a dying mentality, people are A LOT more conscious of "not seeming poor" or basically being more materialistic and feeling the need to have everything that's expected, like an iPhone. In my experience people are also quite braggy. And then there's this statement about suppressing individuals. Where did that come from? Janteloven is about being humble and not thinking you are better than others. It's not about being content with doing "just enough". Norwegian work ethic is about respect and doing your best. If you look at total hours worked in a family, you will see Norway comes out very high on the list, mainly because of greater equality meaning more women work more. Nobody is being told they shouldn't strive for greatness, just don't get the idea that you are the greatest in the world.
Iceland was on that list among the top countries of who shows the most emotions, but you didn't mention that. Finland is the Nordic country with the worst suicide rate, at nr 32. Norway and Denmark by comparison are nr 74 and 89. So the argument there doesn't quite hold up?
And at the end of the video there is so much assumption and baseless statements that it becomes laughable at best to call it facts or "TRUTH".
At the end of the day, the Nordic countries, especially Norway, are generally at the top of the world when it comes to quality of life. Including freedom of press, democracy, safety and low crime rate, high salaries and protective worker's rights, social security, high levels of equality, infrastructure, healthcare and education. These are the more objective factors you can look at, and it becomes quite obvious why people in this region are happy and live happy lives. You think we would be happy if we had authoritarian regimes, or lacked these other important factors?
I'm left with the view that this video showed arrogance and chose to cherry pick/be misinformative/focus on non-factual information (subjective baseless assumptions) to end at a preconceived conclusion. Shame really from a channel with a lot of quality content. There are a lot more points I would argue against, but the one thing I can say I at least agree with is that happiness is not really something one can measure and quantify.

The Jantelov is still very active in Denmark, though it is not as strict as it used to be. You can have a nice car, but you should not brag about it, or feel you are better than anyone else, because of your possesions.
Well said my norwegian brother (tipping the danish flag respectfully low) :-)
in Norway it is political correct to support whatever the government does and be happy about it. Everytime someone wants to change something for the better norwegians always say "do we really want to be like other countries". Thats why Norway is a shitty country in many ways.

Can you elaborate please?
@@infinitejest441 Gladly. In the early 2000s when these studies started to make headlines, I found it impossible to relate to. Comparing the optimism and exuberance I frequently observed in people of other cultures with the quiet stoicism of the typical Danes, it just didn't seem plausible that these were the "happiest people in the world". Then you look at the reasons given and the nature of self-reporting studies and it becomes pretty clear that Danes don't experience more positive emotion, they are just less likely to "confess" to feeling negative emotions. (That plus the other cultural factors mentioned in the video)
Then when I moved to Canada I noticed how a rosy almost Utopian view of Scandinavian society prevails here. "I hear your social systems are the best there, and that people have the best work-life balance and its so clean there etc etc" when really all of that comes down to cultural factors which you can't just copy elsewhere without taking their dark side along for the ride. Its rooted in mono-culturalism and anti-individualism. And while this attitude may have been beneficial in certain ways to the Danes, it is not at all clear to me that it should be intentionally pursued.

My wife comes from the North East and the difference and clash of culture between North/south and east/west is staggering.
I recognize that hardiness of Finland in the northern half of Sweden. Since most Swedes live in the southern part (especially down around Stockholm), that also tends to be the view Finns get of how Swedes are.
From Kainuu and up, you find yourself in 'Forgotten' Finland and would think your in Russia already. As a Scandinavian myself I believe the younger population who’re using the internet have for a pretty long period of time seen how much their Scandinavian country differs from countries like the US, the UK etc, and we’re not many who feels we can identify with the Jante-law, this “law” it’s something our grand-grand parents made up to believe in when times were really hard here. And as you mentioned the mental health is increasing among the younger people and also those who comes from other countries.
People from different cultures are let’s say “used to say hello” when they meet their neighbors, whereas Scandinavians rather stay inside their front doors and peeking out through the little “door-eye” to make sure there’s no neighbors when they walk out from their homes so the don’t have to interact with anyone.
There’s, how crazy it may sound, almost no Scandinavian who likes to interact with people they don’t know and especially not with their neighbors.
It sorts of freaks me out every now and then but I guess you don’t see very clear when it is in front of you everyday.

And through my former work I met many people who’re very lonely and who never had any visits (this observations of mine was long before the pandemic happened)I was working at the hospital in an emergency area (I didn’t work at the first stop in the emergency, the area where I used to work took care of people who needed very urgent surgeries in their abdomen, and the “standard” patient typically stayed at our unit 1,5-2 days and if they needed more care they’d to change to another unit.
When I worked there our unit was obligated to have five beds for patients who needed care longer than the “standard 2 days”.
And it’s when my emergency unit was obliged to take in five beds to non emergency ward, I got the chance to do another type of hospital treatment which involved to engage with the patients in a totally different way, me and my colleagues suddenly found ourselves sitting down and listen to the patients, many of them was old .
It still to this day strikes me how much I appreciated to get the chance to meet with this elderly patients.
Even though almost every single one of them told me how lonely they felt, they also told how much they appreciated when we’re able to sit down and really listen to what they’d to say and I must insert here, that the appreciation really went both ways.
I fourthly enjoyed myself when I was able to interact, sit down and listen it’s so interesting what they’d to tell, I remember many stories but I really wish I’d written them down (in an anonymous way of course)
Many elderly people I’d the chance to meet where the best storytellers I’ve ever listened to and I feel privileged to have heard about their lives.
In my understanding there’s more people, both elderly and young ones, who wants, craves for more human interactions than the opposite, so I don’t know what stopping us.
One factor is of course: “We’re brought up this way”, I can’t remember that my parents ever said anything about “Hey Grace, don’t interact with the neighbors”, but what I do remember (I remembered it as I was writing) My parents/other family members did say things like:1. “Shhhh, we’ve to be quiet 🤫 so we don’t disturb our neighbors”, 2. “Think about what the neighbors would say if you do x-y-z”, or if me and my siblings were to loud inside our own apartment our parents could say to intimidate/scare us: “Watch out so the neighbors don’t come and knock on the door!!”
Maybe such meaningless phrases is what has formed a whole nation to not interact with our neighbors, we’ve it in our DNA, some kind of genetic abnormalities towards our neighbors 😅... I don’t know 🤷♀️😂
We know for a fact that people are feeling very lonely (especially right now when the pandemic is a constant fear to not engage with anyone outside your “quarantine people” and there’s way to many of us who doesn’t have a “quarantine group”) But if we take a look before the pandemic hit the world for awhile, we’ve (and I assume all countries have) research institutes, who measures all sorts of different things, (different companies, health care providers, the government etc. can ask these different research institutes for help to carry out a questionnaire to get access to information from a huge variety of different people about really anything) but let’s focus on mental health, it’s been a big thing for the last decade or so.
The numbers shown from these questionnaires tell us that the no.1 problem in Sweden, that causes different mental health disorders, especially depression, is loneliness.
I don’t have an answer to how we could solve this and neither does the specialist seem to have.
It’s easy to say “start interact more” but actually manage people to so is a whole different story.
As I’m sitting here and writing I’ve to say that where I live we’re pretty good at interacting with each other - IF we occasionally happens to meet in the stair hall, some of my neighbors happily stay and talk for 30-45 minutes BUT I’ve never been invited to anyone to sit down and continue the talk inside and that makes me realize, that I, myself have never taken the initiative to invite any of my neighbors into my apartment either....
what does that say about absolutely everything? It says:
“Everything starts with you”!”
So, I’ve now come to the conclusion that this quote is true, at least for me!
I wish you an amazing day and please continue to write more. Please let me know how social interaction works where you live 🙏

While those in poorer ones focus on feeding their families, and cherish every opportunity they have to spend time with them, all being together, days when they don't have to worry about the money. Those usually don't have time to think a lot about superficial things, creating more problems. People get bored when everything is good, set for them in advance, and they can afford everything they want. They have to come up with something to obsessively worry about. Why they end up in so easily in such a dark places. Like all the famous millionaires, if not billionaires, who offed themselves. We all thought "but had such a wonderful life, why? And he also misunderstands it greatly, because it's not suppose to be taken litteral but is suppose to make us feel equal, not more or less than others. It's written 100 years ago so it is a bit tough, but no one in Scandinavia looks at the law of jante and thinks that they don't have worth, quite the opposite, they have the same worth as everyone else, not matter how good they are or how much money they make.
@@GIVEMEYOURTSHIRT That is the exactly the same thing. If you're worth the same as anyone else, that means that others ain't worth more than you, and you ain't worth more than them. That is exactly what is written in the law of jante.
Jante is, who doesnt fit in with the popular cultural norms, who refuses to be inhumanely insane, who thinks for themselves and theirby is a asset to sociaty, gets the nazi treatment.
@Marcus Tulius Cicero That's problematic, however, if some people ARE truly more smart. So, what: they can't show they're smart? They must pretend to be as stupid - I mean, belonging to the average - as the rest?
There is a difference between calling someone a smartass when he's unjustifiably bragging, when he ain't smart, and someone who is, actually, smart(er). I believe the author here indicates it's also the latter: so even genuinely smart(er) people are swiftly mowed down (socially) if they dare to be smart.
That's a way to stifle excellence, however. Everyone who sticks his head out of the crowd, gets a wack-a-mole treatment. That's also why the PC mentality there has gotten to absurd levels, and you can lose your job just because you have another opinion (and express it) - for instance, in regard to immigration (especially in Sweden).
I am Danish, and I would like to comment on this.
The so-called 'janteloven' was an invention of Norwegian author Aksel Sandemose. It was meant as satire, and is taken as such in Nordic countries. Nobody 'believes' it or 'follows' it, just as nobody would take John Cleese's portrait of British hotel owners in Faulty Towers as truthful in any kind of literal way. Having said that, of course Faulty Towers is funny because Cleese does manage to capture some aspects of the British soul in it, albeit in an exaggerated fashion. In the same way Sandemose's 'janteloven' also manages to capture some aspects of the Nordic soul, but it is important to note that it does so in an exaggerated fashion in the same way that Cleese does. We don't 'believe' in Janteloven here. But it IS true, or so I think at least, that we tend to believe that life is not about endlessly chasing after ever more material possessions. We don't think that is the path to happiness, rather we tend to think that the best things in life are free, and that those things are the true ingredients of happiness.
I think it is that belief that 'janteloven' captures and satirizes about, because, of course, the belief that life is not about winning some rat race makes it so that people who do take part in it look a bit silly, as if they've somehow misunderstood the point of it all. And that, of course, is not something you would want to brag about, and so people here tend not to. Why would you brag about missing the point? So we don't.
And what all this means is that w tend to believe that just as long as your basic needs are met, you are at liberty to pursue and enjoy all those free sources of happiness open to anyone, anywhere.
And we do. And it works. :)

Finland is a wonderful country. I was there in 2019 and I can't wait to go back
Good video! I'm from Norway and Love the fact that you used so many images from my own home town of Ålesund. I agree with a lot of what's being said here, but I think there's too much importance placed on "janteloven". it's not really to be considered a law, nor something Norwegians seriously live by, nor is it indoctrinated. It's mostly something we laugh at. I don't have to look further than to my facebook wall to see that people are not afraid to brag about what they have, so in that regard Norwegians are no different from anyone else. We all want to have a nice looking car and a nice house. :)
I think the reason Norwegians and Nordic people in general are happy is because they feel very safe. Unlike someone living in USA for example, we don't have to worry about loosing our job and ending up on the streets, as well as loosing our health care coverage.
We don't have to worry about having enough money to pay our bills, or being unable to afford sending the kids to school.
There's not the same level of inequality here. Someone working at Mc Donalds can easily take a 4 week vacation to another country and live like a king, and still have money to spare when they get back home. I even know of people with such jobs driving around in Tesla's, thanks to a rather high minimum wage and good security for workers in general. People working 2 or 3 jobs just to make ends meet is almost unheard of here, because even if you work as a waiter or waitress you're still supposed to earn enough to live on that wage.
Norway also have very good health care, and if you get sick you don't have to worry. You will be taken care of. My girlfriend has cancer and she's getting cutting edge immunotheraphy treatment, which is insanely expensive. We would have to sell everything we own just to be able to pay for a few treatments if health care wasn't free. Let me put it this way: I'm really happy there's no insurance company between me and my health, and I feel bad for people in the US who does't have the same security in terms of health care.
We just shake our heads when we read about how things work in USA. Stories of people with severe injuries begging people not to call an ambulance, because it's too expensive. We don't have to worry about that kind of stuff here.
We also have free education, 12 weeks paid maturity leave and so on. If you get sick and have to stay home from work then you still get paid 100% of what you would have earned if you went to work that day. Things like that. There's too much to list, but all this combined is what makes people feel ok about paying rather high taxes. I pay around 36% tax myself. The maximum tax in Norway is 50% but then you would have to earn a LOT to pay that much. Most people pay around 30-40%. I think the tax level is around 20% in USA? If so then we pay almost twice that amount. But then wages are higher, and we don't have to pay to send the children to school, we don't need health insurance and so on. You don't have to stay in a job you hate just because it provides decent health coverage, which I know is the case for many people living in USA. :)
Kevin Tran And the same goes for Sweden, with some minor differences.
Kevin Tran We will see who pays for your girlfriend's cancer treatment if Norwegian oil rigs malfunctioned tomorrow
I am so sorry to hear about your girlfriend and I said a little prayer in my heart for her recovery. But to reply to your comment, I so wish I could in Norway. Sisu has nothing to do with being shy and distant. Sisu is about grit, determination, and strength of will
Sisu is interesting word (tenacity) and I think it has multiple meanings. It also means being able to cope with problems by yourself, without anybody´s help. Not complaining about problems to anybody. It is extremely individualist thinking. It makes the society in Finland distant and shy and also increases isolation and loneliness. It is considered a weakness, almost shame if you need help. Also has to do with very strict and high work ethics, a lot like in Japan. If you fail that it increases depression.

Imagine believing that Janteloven is a law us Scandinavians actually follow. It´s a joke ffs
Yeah. Most of the time it's either brought up as a joke or by people who can't understand why not everyone is as impressed with them as they, themselves are (or willing to hear about it for hours).
Not that there aren't people who act a little bit like that, but that's not too weird considering that (if I remember it correctly) Jantelagen is (at least somewhat) a admonishment of the the unspoken rules of some smaller towns (I think the author mostly described the town he grew up in) were everyone know each other, which IMO probably in a less negative way can be condensed to: don't be a self absorbed nuisance. ;)
Yeah you right imagine vi bruger den ikke
To be fair, I think understanding how and in what context Janteloven is meant to be understood is hard without living the culture we have here. It was written as an expression of social norms, but in a satirical way.
@@WreckedRectum thank you wrecked rectum for explaining that to us
well it seems that way for people outside the nordic countries, I've spoken with people from all around the globe and Scandinavians are a special bunch to say the least
Concerning the freezing temperatures: a friend of mine is Mexican. She moved to Sweden, some ten years ago, and complained about the heat of Swedish summers. Not saying Sweden is hotter than Mexico (obviously not). Just that it apparently still gets too hot, sometimes. I live in Germany, which I've heard described as having "cold oppressive rains" and such. This past winter, I didn't see snow once. I went out shopping in a t shirt. In January. The summers actually get so hot that I have trouble sleeping. Perception of a place is one thing but actually living there is another. Then the going on vacation to other places bit. Well duh, you travel to Egypt or Paris or the Phillipines bc of the history or culture or to bake in the sun at the beach. But being on vacation and, again, actually living somewhere every day are two separate things. And the entire "being happy with less" thing you said falls apart, if what another commenter said is true: the happiness index is NOT based on how happy people say they are. It's based on basic human needs being met. And concerning suicide rate: it's not particularly high in the Nordic countries per se (compared to other countries) while the European average is the highest in the world. So much for your comparison of those places to "the rest of the Western world"
Part of Mexico is in mountains where it is cooler. They probably don't have air conditioners in most places either.
The air is probably a lot more humid in most of Sweden, than it is in most of Mexico. Sometimes here in Denmark, being surrounded by oceans, it feels like you're being boiled alive on a hot summer day. And as mentioned above, air conditioners mostly aren't a thing.
It used to snow in nothern countries we lately havent been getting any

Those 56-60% of income tax depend on your income, we have a progressive tax system in Denmark
A progressive tax system applies to all Scandinavian systems. It has it's benefits and drawbacks. I'll leave out benefits and mention the drawback is that it kicks in just when you get above average. So no motivation to push for the little extra.
That just means you take mor from more successful people that's not progress that's regression
@@marciaosullivan3200 yet there fucking happy as shit and all is well and have no reason to lean toward the way of the united states. check fucking mate.
@Norman - Yes, I've heard idiots say such things. Idiots who don't understand how progressive taxation works... When you your wages hit a new tax band, you only pay the higher rate of tax on money earned over that amount. For instance, if the 40 % tax band kicked in at €50,000 and a wage increase took your wages to € 51,000, you would only pay the 40% tax rate on €1000. In other words you only pay for money earned ABOVE the level where the new rate kicks in. There are usually several thresholds like this. Thus you don't pay any tax on money earned below a certain threshold, a low rate on the next amount of income, a slightly higher rate for income earned above the next threshold etc etc.

Satire or not. Danes truly live by this without knowing to say the least.
Zocress enig
The question lines in what makes one truly happy. I, from personal experience living in a third world country find that it comes from over coming struggle, self doubt, challenges. Happiness ironically is found in the pursuit of happiness/well being. We were designed to overcome struggle, we the only things I know about that are aware of our own mortality and the morality of our loved ones, which in my understanding surely is the biggest struggle known. These first world countries have no real day to day struggles and thus life seems to have no meaning.
You nailed it100%. Poorer (not destitute) societies often have more happy people, because they have to struggle, achieve, help each other. People need each other to overcome challenges and that gives feeling of purpose
Those rules of Janteloven sound like they’re from 1984
Janteloven is sort of a counter to arrogance. Don't think you're special, be modest, be humble. That's what it has meant to me at least.
They're also totally fake. Or well, they technically aren't but nobody gives a shit about Janteloven in itself. It's just the general cultural upbringing that focuses on the quality of living standards, rather than how materialistic you appear on the surface. People still love high quality houses and big cars, it's just not seen as a status symbol to yourself, as much as the true quality of your living standards. A flexible job with good pay and nice social security that allows for free time to enjoy your life is generally valued much higher than strictly material possessions - and that has nothing to do with Janteloven. Thoughty2 really has no clue what he's talking about.
@@Omnighpotent And that is completely true. It's not a law, just an example of proper self value and a way to give an example of how you should treat others with respect and not gloat in their face.
