    The fact she did the ifoga, our most revered and respected act of apology, is gorgeous.
    She did her research. Even if it was ceremonial, it still shows she truly did care. And when aunty forgave her and embraced her immediately… just… amazing. New Zealand, brah. Y’all got me fr fr. Your P.M. ain’t all bad.

    Each time I watch your speech I am in tears. You spoke so eloquently with the utmost respect and pure heart. I agree the Dawn Raids does not define us, apologies made and apologies accepted. Thank you Toesulu Brown - Samoan Community Representative of New Zealand

    this really was :" Im sorry for what my father did " as he was one of the police that did the raids

  • @charlespouono2103

    I often come back to listen to Toesulu Brown’s speech and every time we I do I am overwhelmed by the greatness that was her speech.
    She truly was the best to represent the Samoan community. Even as a Samoan-American, I am proud she spoke for us as a people.
    - Muamua Le Atua
    - She introduced herself traditionally
    - She acknowledged HRH of Tonga as well as those of rank throughout the event.
    - She even welcomed all of Pasefika because that was the point of the event. To apologize to all the Tagata Pasefika involved in the Dawn Raids.
    She pushed the message that even if we go through hard stuff, even if we are discriminated and attacked we will still persevere. As evident in modern New Zealand. The population of islanders still grew despite the raids and our people have proven our determination to survive.
    “However, these events do not define us as a community today.”
    AMENE!
    We will always be strong. We will always push forward. The past has brought us to where we are in the present, but we hold the power to decide where we will stand in our future.

    it is sad that many schools here in aotearoa never openly spoke about what happened to us pasific islanders during the 1970s. the results are of not all but most guests being seated and made audience of the occasion were not aware of the fact before entering the town hall. not only till the PM noted how pacific islanders were treated then felt the closure. i attended a school here in Auckland Edge water college and my teacher made it aware for us pacific kids to know how and why we were treated in that manner. its just sad to many of the people during this assembly were not previously aware. so THANK YOU PM and the NZ government!

    As much as I like to see something like this however reparations for the past history can never compensate mistreatment to those who originally "own" the country which was NEVER the europeans. And uhh $3.5 million is pocket change smh And what about the families who were affected by the Dawn Raids? Do THEY get compensated or get any reparations? A land of milk & honey but only offering milk & no honey. smh I'm just grateful the Pasefika people are forgiving, loving & compassionate & sometimes outsiders take advantage of such greatness & it breaks my heart because we're worth MORE than any diamonds, gold or currency in the world!

    Common! We all know the rules. Every country have rules. Apologised? For what? You think people can come here just like that? We have rules here. Im sorry to say this but itsa fact. You have to have a permit or visa to enter any country say 3 month and when time comes to leave , yoj can leave and apply again. The problem is , islanders came here and then flee into hiding. Wdll, tell me whos fault was it.

    Wow!!! All this effort to apologise for those that overstayed their visa back then! Dawn raids took place because they overstayed their visa! - NO APOLOGIES NEEDED

    • @jesjes5255
      @jesjes5255 2 года назад +14

      The issue is of 'brown skin' profiling & raids with dogs also took in Maoris. The white overstayers where not targeted in the same way.
      If only everyone who overstayed, regardless of race or skin colour, was raided, sure. But they just raided Islander-looking people who then had to prove visa status.
      You can understand why that wasn't right.
      Irrespective of visa status, dogs & bashing down doors would be very traumatic.

    • @bevnutz
      @bevnutz 2 года назад +8

      The apology is for the specific targeting of the pacific community overstaying and the way it was conducted.
      The vast majority of overstayers at the time were of European descent yet they were not targeted in the same manner.
