Because it shows his humanity and his concern for his fellow human beings - a Walton trademark in the end... along with his love of basketball, the Grateful Dead, cannabis, and 🎶 "...life in general.." 🎶
I met Bill Walton at a motivational speaking gathering. He allowed everyone to come up and shake his hand and spend a minute talking to him. At the end of my conversation with him, he asked me what my sons name was- as he was signing an autograph basketball for him, I told him, Patrick… He said…’Make sure you go home and give Patrick a hug and tell him that you love him’. That has always remained with me throughout my years. What a special human being.🙏
I can't think of the passing of another human being especially from the sports world where there are NO negative stories about the person. I truly believe he lived every day to the fullest! He was an amazing intelligent interesting guy who told the best stories.
Don't worry about where, when, or how you will die but rather worry about how you live your life. People will remember you base on how you made them feel and that's your LEGACY. I love the MAN Bill Walton, and pray for his family to find solace and peace. he will be dearly missed. Beautiful story
I grew up watching the NBA with Bill Walton and Snapper Jones calling the games. I enjoyed their banter as much as the games. Bill Walton is one of my all-time favorites. Rest in Peace knowing you made your mark on this world and so many people with your kindness, humor, generosity, and humanity.
Right there with ya..growing up and all the laughs I had with my cousins hearing Bill. it was awesome and something ill never forget. he was very knowledgeable as well of course
I have watched maybe 25 videos paying tribute to Bill and not one bad thing said about him. Just how much he CARED for the fellow humans he shared this earth with. That is THE measure of a persons life that MATTERS❤😊🎉
What a beautiful story. Bill Walton had a sentimental heart of gold and was the genuine article, what you see is what you got. I also remember how much Bill ( and Kareem ) revered John Wooden and his various rules of life ( like "Practice doesn't make Perfect, Only Perfect Practice make Perfect" ), so it would make perfect sense that Bill would treat Mike Breen's father with the attention he deserved. I gotta dig up some of my Grateful Dead albums in his honor.
Bill Walton was one of one. There will never be anyone like him. He was truly unique. I grew up in SoCal a UCLA fan and watched what he did as a player (88 game win streak) and as a student/human being standing up for the rights of veterans and civil rights for the black community.
The craziest thing I remember about bill walton as a kid growing up was his mountain man like look while playing with Portland. I remember sports illustrated doing an article the was labeled "Walton or Jabbar who is the better big man." I had to get that magazine to read the article which at times referred to him as the mountain man. I also laughed at his championship speech outside after Portland won the title. The classic "who ever stole my bike please just return it." Bill was a free spirited man who enjoyed everyday. I have no doubt that had injuries not curtailed his career that he would have probably been the greatest all round big man to ever lace up a pair of tennis for the NBA. Gone way to soon. RIP BIG FELLA! Thanks for the memories😊.
One of the best "stories" of Bill Walton's life was his mentorship under and life long friendship with coach John Wooden. John was a noted "straight - laced" Christian, Bill an iconoclast pot - head "seeker". An odd couple, but both had a deep, abiding respect and friendship for each other - the love of basketball brought them together at UCLA.
I loved him at NBC as part of “the trio”… those were some phenomenal broadcasts! Bill Walton is a quality human and a reminder of what is possible when we… DARE TO LOVE excellently!!
I'm hearing all these stories and tributes to Bill Walton but this one had me tearing up😂. What a wonderful human being! RIP my dear friend. You did bring joy by your presence. You are missed.
Mike, thanks for sharing that wonderful, touching, and very personal story. I got teary eyed. Loved Bill and I think there are many more similar stories. They don't make 'em like the big red head anymore. Shine on Bill, shine on.
Bill was such a great person: forget basketball. RIP Bill. THE GOAT! Man He affected my life in a positive way...Thanks Bill for being great! Typical Bill story here: Bill was a real man with compassion and intelligence.
Breen & Bill Walton did the commentary for the Pistons-Pacers Brawl, they did such a good job! MB: “And now ARTEST is in the STANDS! He’s gota look in his eye right now that’s VERY scary.” Walton: “This is a disgrace.”
Wow! I had no idea Bill broadcast that 2004 brawl? I thought Bill just broadcasted college primarily PAC-12. I will have to look at the you tube footage if there is any available.
Working a game or interviewing him was just like a Robin Williams event, you never knew what was going to happen in that game or interview. Thank you Bill for those memories.
Im a big big time college bb fan i loved thursday night pac 22 bb with dave pasch i met him at a dead show and i told him to sit down lol very very nice person RIP
Fun Bill Walton Fact : his son Luke Walton is named after friend and former Portland Trailblazers teammate Maurice Lucas. "Big Luke" Lucas passed away in 2010, the same year as Walton's former UCLA coach John Wooden.
Listen to the commentating of Lebron James first national BB game on T.V, when he was in H.S. I was so upset after that game. Over the years, I learned more about him. May he rest in peace. He's a legend.
That is the best Bill Walton story.
Because it shows his humanity and his concern for his fellow human beings - a Walton trademark in the end... along with his love of basketball, the Grateful Dead, cannabis, and 🎶 "...life in general.." 🎶
"One of your heroes is returning" wow
Bill Walton, not just a great basketball player, but a great human being. R.I.P. Bill Walton.
I will always miss his commentary as I grew up watching him on NBA on NBC.
RIP BIG FELLA

His dad was a loving father he knows he's a product of it. Too many angry men in and out of jail could use that from their dads.
Mike, thanks for sharing this lovely story about Bill.
One of your heroes is returning to the ship he served on. Uplifting on so many levels.
I can't think of the passing of another human being especially from the sports world where there are NO negative stories about the person. I truly believe he lived every day to the fullest! He was an amazing intelligent interesting guy who told the best stories.

I was on the Midway for 2 years. Very cool that Mike Breen's father served onboard too. We used to call it hotel 41
BIll Walton, thank you for EVERYTHING
Bill Walton... Legendary person.
Best Bill Walton Story i've ever heard. Thank you for sharing such a personal memory.
Two things make me react strongly in this world: the horrors of mankind, and genuine goodness. Equally intense, but complete opposites in nature.
Goat comment
Thanks to Malika Andrews and the entire ESPN family for the Respect you have shown for Bill Walton, a wonderful man!
Meaning she didn’t mention his criminal history

0:16 "...the gym my church" is a statement of the outpouring of love of basketball Bill brought to UCLA and was fed by coach Wooden.
