So let’s follow the events below. 1. On October 26, 1979, Former President Park Jeong-hee, a dictator and former soldier, was killed by Mr. Kim, the director of Korea intelligence agency. (At the time, South Korea was experiencing nationwide protests and Mr. Park was losing his ground. And Mr. Kim killed the president in a small party, who was closest person to Mr. Park ironically.) 2. Shortly after the death of the president, the Martial Law was declared. And Gen. Jeong became the chief of martial law. Because the chief of staff is appointed the chief of martial law as it declares by regulation.(He was not related the coup.) As Mr. Park dies, officially Prime Minister(Mr. Choi) acts him and represents a nation. But remember this time is the age of military dictatorship. Military forces were the most powerful practically. So the chief of martial law was the most essential position under national emergency(martial law). 3. At this point, “Hana-Hoe” and Mr. Jeon, the director of national security agency under military conspired the coup. There were no more powerful groups or person than them. The President died. The director of Korea Intelligence Agency was arrested in charge of murder. Besides Mr. Jeon controlled all information of military as the director of NSA. They were illegal private group and occupied important positions in the military. Eventually they planned to arrest Gen. Jeong illegally, their superior, the chief of martial law and the chief of staff. This means that they control 100% the military power of korea. So actually means they rule the nation. Yes, they tried to took over the government finally. And this means destroying “Democracy and Freedom”. 4. As you can watch all detail process of this coup in this video, they occupied a building of National Defence, Headquaters of military(like pentagon) and arrested all important Generals and staffs. Also there had been casualties in the conflicts sadly. And soldiers who tried to suppress the coup to protect a nation were retaliated by rebel group later. 5. Not mentioned in this video, there were so many protests nationwide in korea. Because people didn’t want the military dictatorship again. And tragically hundreds of citizens died and thousands of them injured in protests against this military coup dictatorship(Mr. Jeon and Hana-Hoe). Like many other countries around the world, the democracy of south korea was made possible because there were so many blood and pain. I honored all those people who have sacrificed to accomplish democracy in this land not only in korea but in the world.
