I have been watching RUclips since it was first created and introduced to the internet sometime way back in 2005. I love RUclips and it's probably my most used resource for all of my online activity and entertainment and my most valued online platform. In all that time that RUclips has existed I have never liked and subscribed to a channel, until I discovered yours. What I think you are both doing here is somthing absolutley beautiful, extraordinary, magical and unique. I'm a chef in a very popular and busy restaurant, I come home tired and exhausted from my long days of work but when I watch your posts I find my stresses, strains and tensions just melt away from me. It's clear to see to all that you are both beautiful, hardworking, intelligent, humorous and gentle souls, choosing somthing different than the mainstream noise and confusions of life. Your videos bring me peace and a breath of fresh clean air. I predict huge things in your future, I think your channel will suprise you as more and more join and realise a simple more frugal life is the way intended. Keep up the wonderful work you do, don't change, wishing you all the very best Paul x

LOL Deer can jump over 6ft. One thing to try is a feww high posts and string bunting. It makes the deer think your fence is higher than it actually is. Worked for Cog Hill Farm in Alabama :)

When I lived in Hawaii I knew a landscaper that lost his eye due to a run in with a bamboo plant, please do be careful! As you were along the fence line talking about the deer, I could image the deer with their own youtube channel, talking to their audience about the humans that try and somewhat succeed in keeping them on one side of the property! OMG, that stag!! The absolute prime specimen! Fantastic!!

There must be a natural deterrent made especially for deer. An odour, a reflector, some sort of low level sound alarm? Was the island free of tenants for a long time before the two of you? It would seem that the deer have invaded and taken advantage of the gap in tenancy to claim your side of the fence as theirs! Cheeky! I hope the slope will help with water drainage. The shot of you two under those trees showed clear danger. Over to the top left hand side of the screen-other potential tree branches were swaying heavily in the wind! Still not tired of seeing the fantastic views the two of you get to enjoy each day.

Think you might need to invest in some fencing pliers for your fence repair as cable ties will break quickly. Need to look at how cattle properties fence a gully to stop stock crawling under.

Well, thank you for watching the back-story and catching up with us. It's good to have you for the ride. At some - but not all - low tides, the water between us and the mainland can get very low. There are some old stepping stones folk used to use to hop over, and a ford at the narrow part of the channel where we cross on the boats that mean when it's low we can take the quad across. Kx

Yup, they definitely can jump your fence. We have a park that keeps the bison separated from the deer with 12 ft. high fencing and driveways with metal slatted ditches. The fence across the street from my home has those gothic spear-like poles. I love the look of them but have seen a couple of deer that have committed suicide by jumping them😢.
They have taken some kind of aerial view of the Loess (luss) Hills and they show where the Native Americans lived in their Earthen homes. Some of the areas are wooded now. Wouldn’t it be fun to have photos of your island like that, not that you two don't find the most amazing architectural sites on your own.😊

How about putting fence barrier pins on the bottom of the fences pegging them down then they can not get in and how about some bunting on the top between posts maybe seeing the bunting waving in the wind might deter them. Another lovely video love your animals how they walk around with you both.

We had to put up a seven foot fence in the back, to keep them out, so we could grow veggies ,fruit and flowers. There are some flowers they supposedly don't eat, but ours never read the manual 😅. Pretty but annoying at the same time. The babies in the Spring are so cute. Some people feed them which you shouldn't. Good luck.

I do, I'll spin (though I'm inexperienced) and felt it this year. Normally use it for upholstery! Kx

I’ve had a similar problem with my veggie garden , about 100 mts square. Fenced with one round of chicken wire but they just jump over! I’ve seen a buck easily clear a stone wall 1.5 mt high. My solution was to add another layer. Doesn’t have to be strong, just a visual barrier. So placing a stringer or 2 of wire & adding sticks vertically spaced along its length might be a cheap , quick solution. Country : south eastern Victoria, Australia.

You are very wise, Scott, to know when to stop cutting a hung tree. No amount of free wood is worth getting squashed by a falling tree. You may have talked about the reason you are responsible for the deer fence, but I missed it. I know there's a push by the Scottish government to corral deer in places, so native forests will return. But I'm confused about why anyone would want to do this on your very wooded island.... It seems that if the fences are mandated, the government would give people assistance in mantaining them? So lovely to see the first signs of spring!

Our son has 5 miles of 8' box wire fencing around his deer ranch to keep deer in, yes, but also to keep coyotes and raccoons out. He has to drive around it frequently to check that something hasn't dug underneath the wire. One continent to another, the problems seem to be the same even if the landscape differs.

I’ve never heard or seen a deer go under a fence. Well, I had to look it up and the experts say deer will try to crawl under before jumping a fence. So, I stand corrected. They also say to have the fence 6’-8’ and cover the bottom so they can’t see though. They won’t jump if they can’t see a safe landing. Boy, that would be expensive. Good luck. They can jump over a car easily so high and far.

Are you able to possibly feed the dear? In USA, our hunters use dear feeders to attract them, there are also nature lovers who use them to supplement their diets and use trail cameras to watch them. But if you put one on a trail outside your fence then maybe they won't care to go to your side of the fence! They're hungry and the island can't always provide enough food!

The last residents had been feeding them carrots and things, so we chuck them some suitable veg when we see them about. They're fantastic swimmers, so they will have quite a range of habitat to feed themselves from. Kx

We won't be killing or eating any of the deer on the island. M&S is only an hour away. When the local supermarket is no longer an option, then we'll revisit this stance. But right now, they are free to roam here and are protected from harm.

We have a fenced garden. The fence is 6ft tall. Our plants were constantly being eaten by deer. I was convinced they were jumping the fence so I put a couple of cameras out there and discovered that there was a low spot in the far back where the fence didn't reach the ground (about a 2ft gap) and I watched as the deer got down on their knees and crawled into the yard. One night I caught them in the act of grazing in the garden so I went out to see what they would do (I didn't want to terrify them and have them hurt themselves). They watched me closely for a bit then finally decided, NOPE, and they all effortlessly hopped over the 6ft fence. I found it odd that they apparently they preferred to crawl in but when spooked had no problem leaping the fence. We took some additional fencing and closed that 2ft hole and the deer have never entered the garden again.

I spotted one major hole in your fence. It is the gap in gate deer fence wide, enough or young, deer to squeeze through but yes, I think the major thing you should do is start up venison stew and venison pie

I watched a video from USA where these homesteaders built a double fence (2 fences several feet apart.. can’t remember the distance) because they said that deer were very good at jumping a high fence but very bad at a long distance jump over a fence, as in they couldn’t clear 2 fences in one jump. If you put your trail camera out you’d soon see if they’re going over or under.. although I suspect it’s under.. large antlers might be difficult to get under the fence 💁 so maybe the big guys go over. Very much enjoying the Scottish weather from the comfort of my sofa ❤️

  • @kdautry100
    @kdautry100 3 месяца назад

Build an additional fence using a grid type fencing, around the existing fence… distance the outer fence far enough from the inner fence, so the deer cannot jump the distance.
The bottom of both fences will have to be solidly secured to the ground.
