Aim at the heart and if the deer reacts your hitting lung. If they don't react your hitting heart. Win win either way. Loved the slow motion of the deer moving/not with the different speed crossbows.
With my age, eye sight and older Slower Barnett, I limit my shots to 25 yards. So deer get hit with a pass thru before they can react to any sound from my bow. Works for me. 😊
I agree that the noise level is a shock to compound bow hunters. I bought a used crossbow (Centerpoint Patriot 415) a couple years ago. After filling my buck tag with my compound bow, I took out the crossbow for an evening doe hunt. I felt like a fish out of water carrying & holding a crossbow in my treestand. 4 deer passed out of range that evening. Before lowering my crossbow, I shot a thumper bolt into the ground. The level of noise shocked me! Those deer that passed through probably left the county after that shot. I thought to myself, I will never do that again. I haven't hunted with a crossbow since that evening even though I have a brand new Swat X1 in a box. I prefer using my compound, but physically I will be back to the crossbow some day. I'm not knocking crossbows, but they are loud to anyone who has hunted with vertical bows for decades. It's just something you have to accept. 350-400 fps within 30 yards is a good place to be with a crossbow in my opinion. Good stuff Rich!
I just bought my first crossbow going to try hunting with it this season i have watched many of your videos and have learned a lot in a short amount of time. Thank you for what you do it has helped me alot
I totally agree with you Rich. Some crossbows and compound bows are louder than others, and that is just the way it is. I believe you have proven in past videos that adding so called silence apparatus on your crossbow will probably just slow it down slightly. I have killed many deer with both crossbow and rifles and had the deer turn and run right in my direction instead of away from the sound. The deer are reacting to an event that startles them and the first reaction is to duck and cover, just as we humans do. I also agree with you about a closer shot at 30yds or less is the best chance we have that the deer will not have the time to react.
My Xpedition Viking 380 has string silencers. Limb savers and rubber string stops..425gr Hammer Fist arrows and I'm fortunate to be pushing more than advertised at 392 fps..and it is super loud....thanks Rich for all your insight and hard work..
I think it's fantastic that you're still over the advertised feed though, that's impressive! Nice to see a company putting out some truth and advertising lol. Is that rubber stuff comes on it I say leave it on the otherwise I'm not in the business of adding it to my crossbows anymore that's for sure haha.
I agree with everything in the video. I can't remeber where zi saw it but they showed rection time related to the position of the deer (head down ,upright, alert, etc,) The deer in the feeding position actually reacted quicker than any other stance.
I’m glad you brought this up. I’m new to crossbows and I always heard that they were “loud” that’s objective but when I finally got mine, I don’t think it’s that bad. And been wondering if it’s worth buying all the little fancy rubber things put all over the bow I mean they look cool but is it if it’s only aesthetic then I’ll just save my money, and even if they do quiet the bow down a little bit is it enough to even worry about. I do think they look kool but I’m not in the woods to look kool and the deer don’t care so I’ll probably just pass on all that. Thanx for the video.
I have traditional recurve bows, modern compound bows and crossbows. Depending on the situation determines what I grab and use that day. I've always used heavier arrows and broadheads just because they give less wear and tear on the limbs, cams and strings. I also think the extra mass hits a little harder ultimately in the end. The added benefit of using heavier arrows and broadheads is that they generally quiet things down a bit. My compound bows are all set at 70#. I have enough poundage to launch about any combination I want. My traditional bows are 50# which is also on the heavy side as most people are at 40 - 45#. My compound crossbows are all over the place due to many makes and models. I don't have any factory rated under about 325 fps and some up around 425 fps or so.
Thank you, I was saying that a long time and a lot of people have been arguing with me I shot Manley a deer with a bow and the bow I could make quieter, and I do believe they did hear my arrow. That’s why I was smaller fletching and all that other stuff with a crossbow but I had a slower one now I’m only shooting 385 ft./s and how to 30 yards maybe even 40 they are not reacting and like you said maybe an inch or two. I agree with you 100% on that one. Good one thank you for crossbow awareness month. All hail bungee.
Honestly this is one thing I’ve never even worried about. With an older crossbow I used to aim a hair low and it worked. But now in 2024 my new crossbow travels so fast I’ve never worried about it. Also never had a deer dodge my new set up. But I’m pretty picky with my shot. Honestly most of my shots are like 20 or 30 feet not yards. And I changed my aim point from center of body behind shoulder to the actual heart so the lower side of the deer. I’m happy I have not wasted my time or money on the “rubber do das”…
I’m trying to thing of a good video topic that I would love for you to do.. explaining it from bungies point of view. I would like to watch you do some public land hunting. But going to a new spot you have not been before. Just so I can see how you would go about a new spot with on x maps. What is your thought process going into the woods. What are you doing? What are you looking for… but I know this month is about the crossbow itself. Do you use tactacam?? Just decided to put the tactacam solo extreme on my crossbow this year. I’m so pumped to get into the woods.
Superbly done Rich! I'm in complete agreement with you about not trying to make them less noisy! And I also concur that faster arrows especially in close make very little difference! I'm still thinking that from a tree stand you need to aim lower just to be safe and from the ground it's simply not as critical! I loved the videos and the slow-motion shots!
For anyone waffling on getting Rich's Crossbow Method book, just do it. But also keep in mind that it isn't some pamphlet you'll cruise through in an afternoon! Amazon dropped the box on my doorstep and am pretty sure this thing weighs 10lbs. It's like ordering a dictionary. Regardless, there's so much info in this book, I don't even know where to start. Likely I'll be packing it into the blinds with me this season so I can pass the time waiting for the deer. 10/10 get the book. 👍
Well said Rich, sound is sound regardless if it is the quietest compound or 500 fps Excalibur! (Well they don't make one of those yet) the only thing I would add is know the anatomy of the game your hunting and keep your shots close to where the pump is.
Great advice get close aim above the leg make sure your sighted in 💯 have a good bolt weight where if and when that “”bad”” shot is made you break the bones and still passthrough get or get a kill. Even compounds are loud that deer still hear and the sound of arrows and bolts going towards them. All the more resin we need the plan b setups because we will never beat the speed of sound and going to far arrows and bolts Eros speed and killing power like you wouldn’t believe.
Been watching since the beginning. I started with excalibur then got a scorpid and now a x1. Thinking about the burris x. Hate to go through what you did. Maybe in future. Love your videos. Be proud you deserve it.
I think they're pretty solid now, I don't have any problem with the ones I have now, it was just the latest and greatest when it first came out and now it's getting closer to that tried true and tested category I hope
Excellent data sir speed vs. reaction time matters, deer hear so well even the sound of fabric brushing against the bark has busted me multiple times, compound bows are definitely quieter however I don't believe they are quiet enough to defeat those perceptible radar ears, imho. -W. Liggett
Hey rich here’s something I’m not sure if you’ve ever talked about, so most crossbows come with the string stops or string dampeners but for example my wicked ridge Blackhawk 360 and many wicked ridge models do not come with string stops, it’s a $45 accessory you can buy from tenpoint, I’ve added it recently after advice from my bow shop guy which he says not only does this piece quiet the crossbow just a fraction it reduces wear on the limbs and string from less vibration and also just the simple string stop makes the bow way more accurate, since the arrow/bolt is released from the string at the exact same spot on the rail every shot with the string stops it increases accuracy, if the string stops aren’t there the arrow can be released at different areas on the rail since it has no stop if that makes sense.
Just like to say , I have had deer jump the string with a vertical (compound) bow. So far haven’t shot crossbow long enough to have it with the crossbow. Only 2 seasons and one doe taken. By the way I shoot a wicked ridge x4 . Very affordable but decent quality IMO.
Rich I know you have seen Dr Grant Woods talk about how much difference there is between a deer head up and head down on how much that duck difference is.
after 48 years hunting more with my crossbow than compound the only significant difference in volume is heavier bolts but that heavy bolts will only suit you if you like the trajectory you preferer...the volume one way or the other will only matter if you blow it and need a second shot because he's gonna kinda know which direction to be paying attention to...if no second shot is needed it's Reese cup time.
You hit that right on the head Rick most crossbows are louder than a compound bow but that's where the factor comes in to having a faster shooting crossbow the fastest shoots the less of a chance of a deer ducking before the arrow gets there not saying that you have to have a four or a 500 ft per second crossbow to keep that from happening but when you weigh an arrow down so that you kill performance in a crossbow that's not helping that at all and the faster the crossbow you could be maybe 5 to 8 yds difference and still get the deer if you have a crossbow that shoots too slow you have a chance of missing that's why I shoot 400 or Soul grain arrows out of my crossbows cuz I like the flatter trajectory so if I make a mistake with yardages I'll still get the deer
You should see if you can do a video recording the sounds from the deers perspective. Sounds of the bow at different yards. Sounds of the arrow flying through the air. (past a microphone). Could be interesting.
It is an interesting topic, as you reach out to longer distances I think the volume becomes less and less important and eventually you reach a point where it doesn't matter. My woodchuck at 81 yards did not care about the sound Bunjie going off LOL
A 250lb. buck on the hoof here in kentucky do not react the same as a 100lb. deer i have hunted over 35 years and used bows that shot 245fps to 315 fps and centerpoint crossbows up to 415 fps with modern day bows and crossbows aim for the heart as your point of impact and no worries out to 30 + yards

The crossbow is pretty loud though. But I’ve had a huge buck at 25 yards and got to shoot at it 3 times with the deer still looking around for me. Worst day of hunting ever. Family knocked my bow off the wall and never told me and rehung it so I didn’t know till the big buck was laughing at me…
Ok so recall I said yesterday I would be setting up to rezero my little old barnett bow. Today I set up, went to cock it and.....nada. it won't cock. No way to take it apart. Heading for my local sport shop to look at new bows. Gotta start from scratch.

If u aim low anticipating the deer 🦌 to drop it want react / drop so then u miss & if you aim center lung then the deer reacts & drops causing you to shoot over the deer so just aim for the vital v & hope for the best 😂
There are lots of ways to do it, I've used microphones and show sound signatures off the videos, I have bought a volume decibel meter, by point is just that it really doesn't matter compared to compound bows
Good Sunday morning to everyone ✝️ Appreciate the video. 🎯 Remember everyone seek Jesus Christ in your life and heart for he is the true answer through it all ✝️🙏💪
Aim at the heart and if the deer reacts your hitting lung. If they don't react your hitting heart. Win win either way. Loved the slow motion of the deer moving/not with the different speed crossbows.

If u aim low anticipating the deer 🦌 to drop it want react / drop so then u miss & if you aim center lung then the deer reacts & drops causing you to shoot over the deer so just aim for the vital v & hope for the best 😂
I am where I want the arrow to go and I expect to get there before that moves, based on experience with my gear and with deer
I got a ideal how to show this on video
There are lots of ways to do it, I've used microphones and show sound signatures off the videos, I have bought a volume decibel meter, by point is just that it really doesn't matter compared to compound bows
Good Sunday morning to everyone ✝️ Appreciate the video. 🎯 Remember everyone seek Jesus Christ in your life and heart for he is the true answer through it all ✝️🙏💪
