That was a giant transformer. I also enjoyed the video. I sought stuff to scrap and found two broken computers and a audio/video receiver. The last one had a nice transformer, but will take care of it later.
Saved this bad boy for today. I like the idea of this. I try to find more talking based videos when I have large jobs to tear down. Got about 150 bay lights to tear down and a pile of hydroponic gear. Maybe this will keep me motivated enough to process some cars in this terrible Saturday weather we’re having. Hey thub, I appreciate the thought put into the topics of each video that you make. But on the flipside I also watch other youtubers like Canadian Treasure Hunter, Scrap Farm, Poly Prophet, Vid Vulture, and Mike the Scavenger, and these guys never have a topic/theme/educational moment. You may not have the time, or you may want to keep your channel a certain way, but I think people would love to watch you just street scrapping and dumpster diving, and it's been a while since you've done that. Sometimes we just want filler.

I really enjoyed just hanging out while you processed the scrap. I have 6 years worth of semi-serious collected scrap. (I grabbed anything I came across, in everyday life) I have about 30 motors from 1/3 hp to 10 hp, and about 400 pounds of copper wire needing stripping. Sometimes, I just put an audio book on and go to town. I would like to have my garage back. It's a two-car affair, COMPLETELY filled with unprocessed scrap metal. I'll get there... eventually.
That sounds like a full week of work, but what an amazing payout it’s gonna be! With so many motors it’ll definitely be worth picking up a hammer drill and cleaning them out. All the best with that endeavour!

Love your videos and you may already have something like this but was wondering could you make an indepth video on how to differentiate different metals and whats best to scrap and also seperating them into all the different types that scrap metal recyclers take
It's impossible to tell the difference between the different metals. You have to be a scientist with millions of dollars worth of equipment. Iron and copper are identicle. It's not like you see on youtube where you just use a magnet and look at the colour.

Enjoyed seeing the use of different tools. Know that stripping wire is an acquired skill. Microscrapping is very different and it is very useful to learn how to do it. We bring all of our computers to recycling were they a palleted. Don't know if they are still being shipped overseas. Glad to see that you are mindful and using your safety equipment. Have been watching PolyProfit, an Australian scrapper. He collects small washing machines and dishwashers and removes the motors to sell them separately. He talks to the items he picks up. Also uses a small pickup and tows a small trailer. Looking forward to hear what your being paid for your metals now.
I like doing repetitive task on a night in front of a TV..lol ..I use my grinder on everything those rivets would have been destroyed. I enjoy doing such tasks and find that eventually you end up with a mountain of non ferrous.
My issue with scrapping while watching tv is I really enjoy dramatic cinema, and they kind of demand one’s attention 😅
The cast al and brass wings probably would’ve been an alright way to spend the time grinding off rivets, but the one I tested was so stiff even with one end free it felt like it would’ve been one of those tasks that quickly became irritating. No right or wrong answer, but I’m not losing any sleep over it haha
What a great video, because I got motivation to take a part an old big junky space wasting table containing screwed metall pices to fit it in the bin and seperate the metal. Always enjoy watching your videos. Please, share more content like this. Stay save and blessings

Look into then diamond crusted cut off disk for the grinder they last alot longer and no risk of them blowing apart and badly injuring yourself but they do cost a fair bit more. I find them at the dump sometimes they are worn down but they still work and the nice part is you always have the full use of the dimension of the disk as they don't wear down look normal cut off disks!
Honest feedback - I just went off doing other stuff and had the random workshop noises in the background! It's probably not something I'd watch again, but I am way behind on watching all my favourite channels at the moment anyway due to time pressures with my big clean-up. Good on you for trying something different tho Thub and I'm sure many loved it!

If you screw a piece of 2×4 to the benchtop to use ase a backstop for the small stuff, it helps keep you fingers out of the way and its more secure. Ask me how I know.

Also one thing iv found with twisted wires like that it’s easier and faster to cut them into 2ft lengths to unravel them faster and just feed the individual 2 ft lengths through the wire stripper
I always do the vice-drill trick, and the longer the wire, the more helpful it is.
@@vincedibona4687 fair enough it’s all good as long as the cable isn’t too thick to fit in the drill iv only just recently got myself a new vice as I smashed my other one to bits beating steel to make things on it what I really need is an anvil haha
@@ccartershecticlife True about the wire/cable thickness, I don't think about that because I rarely come across really good wire. And I think all vices end up being used as makeshift anvils... my poor little guy... *ROFL*
when i was 16 = about 12 years ago i used to crack open washing machine engines with a hammer but it was fun and I have good memories of scrapping :0 with 0 power tools not even a drill ;p
Well those brass hing are worth it considering you already had time on cleaning the cast may as well spend 30ore sec to get them 100% clean.

have you tried to depolutae a board with a heat gun? Hold the board with pliers over a bucket, heat it and smack it. You then can sort through the componets and may even get clean tin beads :P

I would personally put a bin under are in front of ur workbench for the screws
I was recently given special permission to poke around an abandoned school that is scheduled for demolition this summer. This building had been "abandoned" since the early-mid 90s so as you can imagine all of the obvious and easy to get pieces have long since vanished. I did notice some good wire still peeking out of old light switch fixtures and some brass connections in amongst the piping that once fed the radiators in each classroom. Can you think of any places that might have been overlooked or passed by due to inaccessibility that might be worth checking? Can you think of any tricks to pulling the wall embedded wire with only a few inches sticking out to work with?

Its a bit late, but try taking all corner bolts out & hitting the seam or weld & all theplates holding the transformer will basically fall off its a lot better for your productivity lol

I had thought about that for sure! If it was any longer I would’ve had to, but it was in that “middle ground” where I felt like it was fine, I’ll just struggle haha
Sometimes I put them between the drill and vice and reverse twist them, that doesn’t take very long but it also only works on sorta short bits

If you want to blur brand names on cups, you use keyframes & blurring in a video editor. Important if someone doesn't want to be on YT. I've used Kinemaster to do it.
I use DaVinci, it’s got very capable tracking features
If you scrap the sides of chip with a razor knife they come off real easy.

Use a heat gun to get any part off circuit board mate your going to end up ripping hand I have in past or put them in a pan for a minutes then tap them on edge of pan they will all fall off
What a weird concept for a video. But, alright, I'm going to spend an(other) hour diagnosing a big electronics project that's been sitting on my bench and had me stumped for 2 years. ... also, gah, that big beautiful transformer, turned into scraps instead of a welder. Oh well, can't save 'em all.
Oh man. I was using that same tool @16:22 it slipped and I drove it straight through my finger nail and in to the nail bed. Bled like crazy and hurt so bad I saw stars. Hahaha
Get #1 if you remove the shellac otherwise it's 2. I usually toss them transformers in a fire for a min the after I remove the color I steal wool it so it don't have the burnt look and get rejected from the yard
That seems like a lot of effort, and a good amount of pollution to upgrade few pounds of copper by 20 cents or so. Just keep a #2 bucket, #1 bucket, and bare bright bucket and save time and pollution.
Not much effort at all. I also forgot another step that you can use. Far as pollution goes either I do it or the government does it. Really doesn't matter.
Just like people that recycle. 1/3 of that plastic is actually reused the other 2/3 is burned

Just wondering what precious metal is in the Mlcc’s and tantalum capacitors iv recently started collecting e waste but not sure what best parts to remove from the boards to get the best gold / silver/ other precious metal recovery other than the obvious gold fingers and gold plated parts of some boards and relays for the silver contacts
Subscribe to Ewaste ben, and watch some of his older videos one low grade, mid grade, and high grade boards. Also, 999 Dusan I think his name is, he processes these things for the precious metals and shows what is in them. Older MLCCs contain a good amount of palladium, I think the newer ones are mostly nickel, but that's just from youtube education, I've never refined them. As for tantalum capacitors, they contain tantalum which is a valuable metal. i don't think you can refine them, but you can save them until you have a large amount (pounds or kilos worth) and maybe sell them on ebay. There are plenty of chips and other items to remove if you want to eventually refine gold, and ewaste ben is certainly the best source on youtube to learn what those items are.
Love your show you're inspiring and this was a great video and you had a great word and it's kind of funny as I was working processing you were processing and it was kind of funny like when I was struggling with something and I could hear you in the background like oh man this is kind of rough but we're going to do this and and like right when I don't know the thing that I was struggling with and then you got done then I got it done like it it was just weird so technically don't need to have someone there but you can do it by Spirit or by sound. But really I got on here to ask you about those video cards or computer cards whatever you took off those little square boxes like what holds value in that. Is it like Platinum I mean I'm not very key on my metals yet but I'm learning.
