When Yuki also talked on stream about it a few days later, you could still feel the pain in her voice 😭. The awful thing is that when you get something stolen from you, you feel pissed and angry, but eventually move on. However, if someone else's stuff gets stolen from you, there is an extra feeling of guilt added. Her heart sank when Pete asked about the blue pouch 🥺. Thankfully, you managed to see the humor in it and give Yuki reassurance, as pointing fingers leads to nothing--the only fingers that need to be pointed at are those blaming the thieves themselves, not the victims. I can only hope that this is the first and last time something like this happens to you guys ❤.

Can confirm the area around "Big Ben" is ALWAYS very busy and a huge tourist hot spot, so Yuki was obviously targeted which is extremely infuriating and gross. That being said, I'm glad you guys ended up ok. Just maybe don't walk around a busy touristy area with a bag full of cash and your passport. Separate your bills and spread them around your person so it's not all in one spot.

It just sucks that London’s like this. I wish I could say that this is a rarity in happening, but it really isn’t. Especially with poverty increasing, theft and stealing of all kinds are becoming more common. I caught someone trying to check if my family’s car was unlocked (to steal it) on camera on two different occasions, then someone screwed off expensive car parts from my neighbours’. These are just some of the things that happen, I feel bad that Yuki had to experience this.

So sorry this happened to Yuki and yourself; as a London resident for 15 years, street crime and theft has become a massive issue here of late. Exhaustingly so! At least you were both unharmed, as these robberies can get violent very quickly. Hopefully this doesn't put you off of returning to the UK. Having lived in Japan myself (and recently returned for a holiday) it's so refreshing but also unnerving how much safer it is than most other countries.

I don't think so, street crime and theft have always existed. I really doubt it's a recent problem.

I can relate to this so much. My wife is Japanese, I'm Italian from the south of Italy and I've been in London for 14 years. I've never been robbed and my wife got her phone stolen in the first year she was here. These robbers know too well who are the most vulnerable targets and among these the best for them are unaware Japanese tourists. It didn't help that my wife was keeping her phone in the back pocket of her backpack. My mind is just conditioned to think that someone is trying to steal from me at all times, but I had to teach this directly to my wife because in her mind being a thief like that is just unthinkable.

Been to London about 4 times and never had such an unfortunate experience! So sorry to hear. But any tourist attraction around the world will be prone to such things. You just gotta be a smart tourist. I NEVER carry that much cash on me, but if you really have to, keep it in the least obvious places. I spread them in different places; inside your socks, secret inside jacket pockets, wedged under a bracelet or watch or armband underneath a shirt, anything but a bag, which is the easiest thing for any thief to steal.

Oof. Last time I went back to the UK from Canada, we decided to take a week in Belgium to visit some of my favorite breweries, as it was my 40th. The night before, we went out drinking, and I had the worst hangover of my life. We made it to the Eurostar, but didn't realize you had to get there 30 minutes early (I'd taken a detour to throw up at the station), and they wouldnt let us on. My partner begged the lady to let us on, while I sat on the floor with the station spinning around me. Thankfully, the ticket person decided to look the other way while we ducked under the barricade and ran for the platform.

(I just listened to Chris's podcast, wanted to leave a little comment, hope it's useful)
Pete, I've lived in several cities around Europe including London and Paris. My suggestion, if you really want to move to Europe, is DO NOT MOVE TO PARIS.
i moved to Paris a while back, at the end of a 10-year travel spree, hoping to find a more stable home. Instead I found a city where people live on an inhuman scale. Not only was I stressed as in any large city (I'm from Milan and by that time I'd already lived in London and Munich) but the sheer population density makes living together not a very pleasant experience (and it's a huge euphemism). There are around 20.000 people per square km in Paris, against the approx 5.500 people x km2 in London and the 6.000 people x km2 in Tokyo!!! And Parisians are definitely not as polite as Londoners and Tokyoites. I had such negative and absurd experiences in Paris that, even if I thought I might have found my "forever home" I left after only one year.
Paris is the place where I learned how to make myself invisible. It was necessary to live there surrounded by people who s'en foutent of everything and everybody. Of course there were many positive experiences too, but the balance is heavily negative.
I think you might enjoy Barcelona, there are enough working opportunities and people are more open than in the UK or France but not too crazy, so maybe there could be less of a culture shock. And well, the weather 😊
PS: I met wonderful people in Paris who are still part of my life. This is not about people, it's about a monster of a city that pushes them towards inhumanity. And... Paris is still the most beautiful city I've seen by night. So.

I know you already learned a lot of lessons from all this mistakes, but I have to say...
Winter 22/23 I spent two months in Europe with my husband -- similar to you, I wanted to show him around places I knew! But we stayed mostly with friends and family in different places. We wanted to do a few days outing just us, no family or friends, and discover a new place together. And so we chose Italy. More specifically, Rome, for three days. And the major factor in that decision is that it's much cheaper than most other big European cities! We stayed at a nice place with a big hot tub for under $100/night, and we had delicious dinners for a fairly good budget. So, next time, maybe go for Italy like Yuki wanted?
Trains and metros are good and cheap, and get you to lots of places. That being said, you do have to look out for pick pockets like in other big cities. But you will have a fun couples adventure, with delicious coffee every morning, amazing dinners, and way budget-friendlier ;)

Addendum: I would actually write a letter complimenting that lady who tried to help you, but it would actually be a letter of complaint. Of course, in a complaint letter, always include what you would like. So the letter should first state your experience (terrible) until the nice thing the lady did and you'd like to thank her. Then go into your entire experience, and after each charge, state that that charge should not have been charged. End with while the one act of kindness was nice, your perfect Eurostar experience would have been blah blah blah.
Make sure to compliment, and complain, state the ask (refunds, or check to see if they are one of those companies that only does coupons, though since you were tourists, refunds would be best).
I would also complain to my credit card, assuming you charged it. For the credit card, I would state that I did not receive what I paid for. You can go into the entire spiel about the changes, each one ending with "did not receive what was paid for". Make the ask: refund the charge.

On the tube my wife gets a message from our hotel ! The partial scumbag, tossed the pouch IN THE POST OFFICE with our passports and licenses ! The head of the post office found our room key IN THE POUCH, then proceeded TO CALL EVERY HILTON IN LONDON until he found us ! We got a Uber back to the post office to retrieve our PASSPORTS, DRIVERS LICENSES,
(and Sam’s cards 😝)The most surreal experience we have ever experienced ! GOD BLESS THAT POST OFFICE MANAGER !!!

Tip one ! ALWAYS make copies of your passports! We had copies of ours , made it easy for us to get us to prove who we were to get our passports back !

The pickpocket got us when I was getting my two pints at the BUSY pub ! “Tapped” the card put my wallet in my FRONT COAT POCKET, then at the exact second I picked up my drinks is when they got it !! Truly a blink of an eye !! I’ll never forget the moment it happened !

Sorry for your loss Pete. I don't think I'd go for a night at the Savoy, but I would try the Afternoon Tea (starting) at 75 GBP per person for the experience.

Also, the London and Paris airport I was at made me really appreciate the Midway airport in Chicago. O’Hare is crazy, but it still is better than what we dealt with there.

Meaning that Chris owes you big for getting you into the situation. Never ask the question "What is the worst that could happen". Because it usually does. Poor Yuki, I bet that she never left your side except for the embassy only because she was not allowed in with her bag. I am just glad that you guys are okay and the only thing to do is make the best of it. So when is the next planned trip? I also think that the Eurostar train service should have given you a refund. Since you are a media influencer, spread the word about this special ticket they referred to. I bet it still would not get you a refund...

Me and my bf went to Paris on my B-day for 3 days. The trip was amazing, we took a million pictures with my bf’s new smartphone and I was really excited to look back at them when we get back home. Sadly, somewhere at the Louvre square my bf’s phone got stolen( but the most devastating were the pictures. To say it made me sad is to say nothing. I felt I got robbed of the whole holiday. I really feel for you guys 🙏🏻

That's absolutely awful, I'm so sorry that happened. I've lived in the UK my whole life (near Glasgow) and in that time I've been mugged once and my mum had her bank card stolen while we were waiting to use an ATM... and that's it in 36 years. I know it's more common for these things to happen in London, but I've been to London more times than I can count, sometimes on my own, so I think Yuki had just the worst luck 🙁 I hope it won't put you off visiting the UK again, though I'd understand if you avoid London in future.

I'm not really the one to advocate for thinking positive but I think in this one particular case I'll make an exception for Pete and Yuki here. Sure. You made a lot of mistakes. Sure a lot of money got stolen and spent. Sure it was stressful. And yet all those things will only enhance this memory with your wife in the future. I am so happy for you Pete. Happy that you not only met a great girl but have a great wife. Despite everything that went wrong. Everything went so right. You'll both have these amazing memories and story for the rest of your life. I know the money hurts but money is never guaranteed and half the time we don't even remember what we spent it on. You met a great chap in Nick who helped you and in an ironic thankfull twist that thievery is so common in London that they were able to set you up with a pass port with little to no real issues. You also got a lot of great pictures.
Sure you can see the experience for the bad and that Chris gave you terrible advice but the reality is most couples go on trips and have an over all very very ordinary and dull time. At least we can say for certain that this trip was anything but ordinary and dull. I say if anything these things happening to you are going to be a secret blessing for your marriage. The stars and fate truly aligned when Chris got you to change your plans. Imagine if you didn't. A story for the ages makes it that much more special and a future testament that will keep you both strong and happy. You've already gone through one of the worst experiences a couple will go through and you are both fine. =) Congrats again Pete and Yuki.
Edit: I know I've already written so much but wouldn't it be funny if the thief was a fan and later realize it? Maybe they'll donate 1/4 of it back? Here's hoping.

When carrying a lot of money abroad make sure your bags with money are in sight. Don’t ever be careless and underestimate the amount of mischief people can get up to. You are abroad in a country you are not familiar with. You’ve maybe only seen the pros but haven’t bothered to look at cons
