  • The House Plant known as the 'Swiss Cheese Plant' as well as 'Monkey Mask' - Monstera Adansonii - needs to be repotted every 2 - 3 years and for proper care the best time to do this in spring.
You will need a free draining potting mix and a pot just a little larger than the existing one.
If you are growing this as a climbing plant you will also need a stake or support, coir or moss totems are very popular for larger plants..
Monstera adansonii is a plant with natural holes in the leaves, (fenestrations) however this is only on the older leaves, the small new leaves do not usually have holes. It is these holes that give it one of its common name os ’Swiss Cheese Plant’.
However other Monstera also have this common name so it is best to stick to the botanical name of Monstera adansonii.
It is also sometimes called the 5 holes plant, however the number of holes differs so again, use the botanical name.
How do you care for Monstera Adansonii?
If you consider that this is naturally a rainforest plant that grows in filtered light. This does not mean very low light, just good filtered light.
A lack of light will cause weak straggly growth, strong full sun will cause leaf burn.
    Growing Medium
Use a free draining potting mix, you cause a normal potting mix with 1/3 large perlite mixed through. This will provide a fee draining mix with some moisture retention.
    Watering
The simple answer is never dry and never wet.
You also need to make sure that the plant never stands in a dish of water, so always empty the saucer if the pot is in one.
As a guide, only water when the top 2 - 3 inches ( 5 - 7 kms) has dried. You can also water by weight, get the feel of the weight of the pot when dry, and then again when wet. As the pot gets on the light side, it's time to water.
    Fertiliser
As you growing this as an indoor plant, you will not want strong smelling fertilisers. Try a slow release general purpose type suited to indoor plants.
You can also use a liquid fertiliser at a reduced rate when watering.
Every month or two water well with clean tap water that has been allowed to stand overnight. This will help to flush out accumulated salts from the fertiliser.
    Is Monstera Adansonii fast growing?
This is a fast growing species once established with smaller leaves that M.delicosa
Why is my Monstera Adansonii turning yellow?
    Usually caused by under watering.
    Can you prune Monstera Adansonii?
Yes you can, finite gets to tall you can cut it back to a growth node. In extreme case you can prune it back hard and it will usually reshoot from the base.

I have recently been given one of these. The leaves are dull and for every new leaf I seem to be losing a leaf because the leaves go yellow. I intend to re pot. What advise can you give me?

Yellowing leaves are generally from overwatering. Use a free draining potting mix, if need mix a little perlite through the mix, pumice or similar will also help. Moist, but never wet, so allow to dry a little before watering.

I just repotted mine and noticed that where the roots where coming out of was yellow! Is that a bad sign? I never had a leaf turn yellow and they all started turning yellow so scared it’s gonna die I’ve had it almost 2 years now

If the roots are soft and mushy it is a problem. I think that maybe it is overwatered, could that be it? If so the repotting could help. Cut back on water, let the soil dry a little before watering again. And maybe do not water for two weeks if the soil is moist now...... Let us know if that sounds right... Katey A

I’ve just been given a monkey mask plant and although it looks generally healthy a few lower leaves are turning yellow with a few brown spots, and some higher leaves have mildly dry crispy borders. I’m thinking to repot since it has been in a shop it’s whole life?

The dry leaf edges indicated lack of water. Would definitely repot as the potting mix may be old and becoming hydrophobic. Water well before repotting to hydrate the plant.

How does the original plant grow back leaves from where it's been propagated

    • @johnnyAGardening
      @johnnyAGardening  2 года назад

The original plant will shoot out from a node on the stem, and often a new shoot from beneath the soil.
