ok, lets be real here, in base to base sonic loses somewhat. sonic is clearly the more tactical fighter when it comes it fighting. and mario is, he a slugger. all he does is throw haymakers and a kick here and there. sonic is a marital artist who relies on his natural speed. which would allow him to avoid alot of mario's base form attacks. but if we include forms(Canon only). sonic leaves mario in a bloody mess.
reason 1: sonic in lore can remain in super sonic for weeks if not a year tops without rings. the ring counter is a gameplay mechanic. case and point cutscene plays when your down to lets say 2 rings. end of cutscene sonic is still super, depsite the fact due to ring limit should have turn back after the cutscene.
2: sonic is nigh invunrable as super sonic. only a handful of things can hurt him in super, The titans from frontiers which are designed by literal gods to fight things like super sonic. Dark Gaia who can weaken the power of super sonic(via turning off emeralds in a form less then base dark gaia), And Solaris, literally to my knowledge the Zeno of the sonic universe.
3: mario's power ups that match super sonic(power star, and metal mario.) have a time limit of only a minute tops.
