Totally agree on this Justin! I know this might sound bias (because we are a video editing company lol) but our clients are claiming they were able to save so much time and focus on other things such as conceptualizing for more videos.
When I typed in YT search "how to hire a video editor for youtube" your video was the only one that answered the question, even though it was four years old and a bit down from the top. Thank you for practical advice.

I promise any so called "editor" you hire for between $3-7 hour will deliver an unwatchable, technical mess that you will be embarrassed to promote your business with. Good editing is a skill and an art form that takes years to develop. This guy is full of BS.
I want to agree with you about the skill and art form marsailmar1 (I've been editing for almost 20 years - yes, actual A/B reels that needed to be spliced together) but Justin is NOT full of BS. He walks his talk and when you are hiring from another country - that $3-$7 translates to about $50/hr or more here in the states. You can find some very good talent and visual storytellers who will do a lovely job.
As a video editor it's a bit of a slap in the face that he would cheapen this art form. Making people think that video editing is only worth that much. Video editors should be making WAY more than that.

Justin...you have such a personal style! I’ve edited my own, learning as I go, getting a late start at 63, but CRAZY about shooting and producing everyday life stuff. We hike, bike, backpack and have “senior adventures” to share! How in the world do you get SO comfortable talking to the camera????!!! I look goofy and say silly things, then edit it out! Hubs thinks it’s funny, so sometimes I use it, at my expense. I don’t have a channel, yet, just not sure the world would really want to tune in to see what we are doing! I understand you can have a private channel, maybe that’d be a place to start?? Taking vids, editing them and thinking of new adventures is my new passion!! We got an action cam, but the stabilization wasn’t so good. Now graduated to a Canon, looks WAY more professional on the trail.

I'm looking for a video editor that can edit long 8 hour videos for youtube obviously I will pay. But I'm looking for a partnership as my channel grows your pay grows
I've wanted an editor for a long while now. I used to have that "my videos are my art and no one can understand my art" mentality, but when editing took too much time away from creating, I soon realised I'd rather draw than edit.
Cost and non NBN internet is my main constraint now considering my videos are a tad longer than the typical talking head video. Not show how big your files are, but mine easily expand beyond 20gb for a tutorial. I'm considering trading skills. Trading my design skills for someone's editing skills. But again, that would have to be local because I'm stuck on prehistoric internet.
Thanks mate, I can't get NBN here and the ADSL is absolute crap. I ended up finding a local Fixed Wireless provider and they've been awesome! I get about 80/80 at the slowest but usually much higher.
Try searching for local Fixed Wireless providers in your area. I use Flash Fibres
Hey , I want to ask if you still were feeling this way. I am not considered a editor. I do have very old videos of me up on my channel, even though they are old they still show what i could do with editing at that stage of my life. The reason I want to try it out and see if it were something that I would love to do. If you would consider me edit a video of yours, I wouldn't want any money to do it or even any credit. I simply want to try it and see if i would want to become a full editor for youtubers content. I fully understand if you wouldn't want a person who has not really shown off their editing skills to you and wants to edit your content, but please consider that I will do it for free and you don't even have to give credit, like I just want to see if editing people youtube videos is where i want to go. My main youtube channel had 130k subs and my 2nd one is 15k subs. I always edited my own videos.
i didnt trust outsourcing for my video revenue over cost for a editor was easier for me to do it.
Outsourcing comes when you can't edit anymore. Imagine your company grows even more, and your tasks are way more important and bigger. That's when you should hire more people to help at each task. Rome wasn't built in one day nor by one single person, and so any successful business.

Struggling with the full time job in the hospital and editing weekly videos - I think I’m also going to try outsourcing but worried it won’t be exactly what I want (even with a really specific brief) - did you ever have issues with this?
I salute front liners you do the awesome job during this pandemic 😇 outsourcing is an alternative if the task were too overwhelming or you don't have time for it, just make sure you set your goals clear shouldn't have any big issues 😊

I personally will never stop editing my own videos becuase i enjoy editing them. Even if I hit 1,000 or 100,000 subs ill keep editing. But still great advice for when your ready to give your content to someone else :)

Seriously... You're worried as a 'pro editor' that me showing people how they can get their youtube content edited cheap is going to impact the work you get?? If anything.. this should help you take on more work for your clients by bringing on some help to edit those extra projects for you without taking up more of your time. Unless you're a pro editor just editing people's youtube content..feeling they need to do everything themselves

So many variables... depends on content and the editor... our videos typically take 4 - 8 hours

Is it a common practice to pay an editor per minute of raw footage sent? I would rather do that than pay per hour, or even per video.
I anticipate sending 20-25 minutes of raw footage for the production of a 15 minute finished video.

@@PrimalVideo Justin, I see on your "Video Editor Job Description" template than an applicant must specify their hourly rate. As some editors work less efficiently than others, doesn't paying hourly leave things rather open-ended in terms of cost per project?
Agree! but adding it in there will at least give you some idea of what they could charge before you get to the interview and shortlisting part of hiring. For some projects we do fixed rate, others we agree hourly rate but with a set deadline for the project.
@@PrimalVideo Makes sense but I am really careful with "time and materials" contract terms even with a deadline or limit, as the provider will take every bit of the time allowed.

How do you make sure online editors from overseas don’t use your content or sell your content as there is no copyrights law in some places. I heard some people copy content and flip it and it's not anymore illegal to post. Please advice? Thanks
I guess there's no real way to stop that risk altogether.. but you should be able to be confident that's not going to happen through the hiring process. We've used a lot of editors - one company we ran had 37 at one point.. never had an issue. We do ask all our contractors to sign an agreement just as an extra step (not that that would stop anything happening really).. But really look at the content you're putting out, if it's something confidential or something high risk.. then maybe go for a local editor.. but the risk could be the same there too ;)
Make a little waiver, and call it x. UnMarkedPanic Terms and Conditions. And then write you cannot steal the content something like that. And if somebody steals your content sue them and you'll be safe. (Btw I can edit vids.)

I am literally this moment trying to work through a 76 hour Co-op game play through of a strategy game. The only time its good to ask a video editor to do a test edit, is if you are going to pay them for doing a video editing test.If you don't trust them just don't hire them. tests are what many clients use to justify getting free work. asking for video editing test is terrible advice, think about it, would you hire a plumber to come test if they can fix your taps? definitely not.The other points you raised though are pretty good.
I never said the test was free... I totally agree with you, we always pay for a test edit, it's more of a trial project to see if we'll be working together again in the future.

It will free up time for you to work on more of your own stuff, so if time is important to you then it would be beneficial!
My only reason for not having an editor yet is because I literally have no budget or income, and that's kind of a dealbreaker, so even after watching this video, I doubt I personally am in a position to hire anybody.

Ok so I made a few 3 and 5 minute videos here and there for my son's college graduation...I contacted a few people and they returned my email...one guy wants me to send him 50% down and my footage...I wanted to meet him in person and go through the videos together.. That website seems like a total scam. Just to be able to even begin to try to hire people, you have to pay $69 a month. How do you think that people can afford that? I would be willing to pay an editor in the US who I actually can talk to and count on $69 an hour, not a crappy website that doesn't guarantee that I will get a well edited video.
