I’ve found that if you don’t apply the film perfectly to the double-sided tape, meaning there’s any wrinkle to it, it allows air in. And if the window is very drafty, the air squeezing through any small gap can pull the film away from the tape over time.
used bubble wrap last year (on double glazing) -big improvement - put it up again this year - good thing is you can take it off and use it again - you only use water to stick it to the window - plenty of vids on utube.......
Thanks for showing the process. Your sealed windows at the beginning (minute 0.31) show a lot of moisture trapped...is this an issue for growing mold in the winter? Does it remain or dissipate? We're struggling with moisture on our double-glazed windows causing mold growth on the wood.
I don’t get how you cut it a few inches bigger and not have it struggle to seamlessly adhere around the frame. When I do that, it almost has to fold to adhere
I was right there with him...until he used a box cutter to trim the plastic. Unless you have surgical precision, it's sure to also cut a thin score line on the underlying frame. There's gotta be a better way!
So basically, we buy window film from the store and follow the manufacturer’s instructions, great tip. I don’t think I would have thought about doing that. I’m glad I found this video.
I've got curious/pokey hole in everything kind of kids. They would poke their fingers thru this within 24hrs of installing it. The same as looking your finger in the new paper towel plastic wrapping cuz you just have to. I've been looking for an alternative to this plastic wrapping answer though. Maybe something for the outside.
Even with the extra space as an air gap, I don't get how a 1 mil sheet of plastic insulates anything at all whatsoever. This seems like a scam. Anyone have any proof this works? As in an HVAC system being able to reach higher or lower temps?
Need better semi permanent solution for a case of 14 windows in house. That's least $140 +air/purifier/ filter needing clean air as result. And a pet or 2 - there goes the thin plastic. So an internal frame, thicker mil plastic -though it'll look like a construction zone due to diffused plastic, but would be a better suit. Could cost any where from 5x -10x as initial thin plastic = $500 >> $1000; could pay itself in about 5 yrs. Better warmer than colder esp not feeling a draft(s).
Y’all wanna do it cheap? Saran Wrap, electric tape and a fuckton of patience. I just did it and I live in Newfoundland where it’s basically winter for half the year.
So you don't air that room at all then? Good luck with growing mould. I don't understand how you can suggest sealing the window without access to open it!
even if you don’t open your window -your furnace is bringing the air from outside into your house but in warmer condition -so you actually do have circulation-and when weather is better open door for draft for a bit
I have rooms in my home with windows which do not open and there is no mold, because I control the moisture in my home. But in the dead of winter I do not keep my windows open. In any case, these kits have been sold for decades, and I have used them but this year I made simple wooden frames to stick the plastic to. Then should I need to open a window, I can pop it out.
You think that "air" will stop mold growth? I dont know where you live, but where I live there is so much moisture in the air outside it would probably make things worse. Mold likes dark, damp, wet warm spaces. I assure you the dead of winter is not going to cause mold growth. if there is a mist of clorox will shut it down PDQ.
The window film is a fing ripoff. Buy regular plasticthese manufacturers get away with massive orofit margins by selling a five foot piece of saran wrap because it’s ‘clear’. Gimme a break.
In less than two minutes you explained the process better than all the 10 minute videos I've just watched.
Short video, no yapping, good explanation and very funny wife joke, great job! I'm still laughing from that joke

And at least for me sounds like someone messing with a bag of chips when wind hits it outside.
Yeah that's why I use painters tape to go over the edges. Ugly as sin, should keep it sealed and won't harm the paint
@@AaronW315 Ah I'll use that, good idea- thanks!!
The only real problem I had was a too short cord on my hair dryer. My husband and I did this today and we are both in our 70s.
They sell this new invention called extension cords. Have a warm Winter! 😊
Good job. More than I've done yet on something like this little project. I'm sure you both managed to eventually improvise.
Good job simple and to the point.

But then you can't see outside. I'd hate to be boxed in like that, l need to be able to see outside.
Thank you for your video! I was just planning to put the plastic up. You made it easier for me.
Happy to help!
Can you install on the outside to prevent insects from coming in through old wooden windows?
Would it help more if I put one on the outside too???
How do you do this if you live in an apartment with no frame? Don't want to take paint off drywall.
This is the best explanation anywhere. Thank you so much! 🙂🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄
Thank you!! Straight to the point!!

If you're in the UK, yes, mould will be a problem. Our climate and houses are basically crap crap crap.
Use silica packets for moisture. You can also use products specifically made for moisture gathering in those areas.
Box cutter on the painted window frame?!
Thank you so much ! Great help for insulating the windows 😊
What do I do if I already did this to my windows and yet my apartment is still drafty and cold
my only problem is if i ever want to open the window to refresh the house with some nice fresh air I cant.
Don’t do that
That’s not a huge problem if you live somewhere cold.
I don’t get how you cut it a few inches bigger and not have it struggle to seamlessly adhere around the frame. When I do that, it almost has to fold to adhere
Would this not make you get more mould in the house , due not being able to let fresh air in and damp air out ?
This will actually reduce or eliminate condensation on the window pane.
@@mckenziekeith7434Maybe, but ld rather have fresh air and be able to open the window to ventilate when needed.
Who else needs to do this right now but can’t go to the hardware store and is about to use saran wrap 🙋♂️
Do you think this delivers any sound deading too? That is what ibneed
for extra protection, can you caulk first, and then add the plastic wrap?
I don't have this kit in my country. What type of plastic wrap could you use?
Incredibly challenging to separate the adhesive backing on tape.
yes. put tape on a heat register, or use a hair dryer to warm it up... use a (new) sharp razor blade.
how do i do this to windows with no frame whatsoever?
Succinctly and well stated. Thank you so much. 👍👍👍👍👍
I was right there with him...until he used a box cutter to trim the plastic. Unless you have surgical precision, it's sure to also cut a thin score line on the underlying frame. There's gotta be a better way!
Lay a ruler down lol any scrap material to cut on. It isn’t that hard, but I’ll agree he gave it the ole landlord treatment with the knife
I did have to cringe a little there

Thumbs up for cold spouse joke
Instant follow after that’s a wrap
any concerns with moisture build up and deposits between the plastic and window?
I think it would be smart to vent out the room before applying the film. That way the airgap would be dry so no condensation.
@@RUclips..Enjoyer Thanks. I checked the humidity in the room too, and it's quite low, so that should help too.
This should either reduce or eliminate condensation on the window pane.
I'll try this again but it has NEVER worked this way 4 me
Was it hard to remove the wrap in the spring?
No it isnt
but you cant open the window...
Which usually isn't a problem when you're trying to keep cold air outside
thank youuu this is exactly what i needed!
Good video
@@SaraChumley 🙏
Lol the spouse jokes 😄 cute
How are you supposed to open the window?
Does anybody know how long these last? And if you need to remove them, is it easy enough to do so?
last as long as you leave them on.... they're plastic. so one winter season and replace them next year. Not good cost savings imo
I wrapped a window last winter and it’s still holding strong. Helps that it’s a window my kids can’t reach
@@DS-qw1tpDon't you ever open your windows for fresh air though?
what can I do if I need to open the window?
open doors...
Can you do this for doors too?
I wouldn’t bc how u gonna get through it
But can you open windows with this?
@@DavideNastri no
My plastic sheet keeps coming off the sealing tape
Heat the tape
Just use 3 M double side if you don't want to leave mess after you remove the plastic film
How will you open the window?
You can't
But doesn't this mean you won't be able to open your windows
How does one open the window after placing plastic?
you dont
I don’t have a hair dryer I’m bald! I’m sure it’ll be fine, right?
I am glad you have solved the draft problem in your house.
Now spouse, same as before, take a clear plastic sheet and put it over ....... 😁
how do you open the window
You don't. You're sealed in for the entire season. This is why we leave one window undone per room, in case of fire.
@@jillsyillsy…it’s plastic my guy, I think you can defeat it pretty easily if your life depended on getting out of that window

You can put these outside! I find it far more practical in dealing with condensation
How do you get the tape residue off in the Spring?
Hair dryer.
U don’t
Goo Gone.

why thank you 😁
Great video and hilarious joke!

It would block/help keep out cold air flowing in from un-perfectly-sealed windows
Easy, maybe, but cheap? Those kits run at least $20 per window.

Wouldn't it be better to just install an insulated window as a long-term solution? You'll have to do this every single year otherwise.
I’m going to try this my house is really drafty
Let us know how it goes!
did it work?
had my headphones on too high and looked hard to my right at 1:31

TOOTSIES!
Big film kit controls window insolation. This film sucks. The insolation sucks and it looks horrible
@jasonjase8661 It's certainly not a perfect or permanent solution but it's quick, cheap and effective enough as a Band-Aid fix.
Condensation 😮😅😅😅
