Firstly, your high reflection reverb is HEAVENLY!! Wow. Beautiful. Can't replicate that digitally! And your tone is superb. I like the "chords" you play in there too! Nice! So, I thought it worth mentioning that Getz played an Otto 5* as well but was known to use Rico 4's or even 5's on it. I think I would pass out doing that but I am less a man than Stan The Man. And ay info on what the "Early Babbit" pieces were all about? I've only read about them, no experience. Just subscribed to your channel. Looking forward to watching more of your vids. Thanks so much.
WOW!! I always wondered what Getz played on. He is one of my top 3 ballad players ever. So far the Modern Vintage Otto Link is my favorite hard rubber piece and I'm saddened that I can't play it more. (because of the small bore/neck issue) The new neck will be coming soon though. I don't have any info on the early Babbit pieces but Theo Wanne seems to be a bit of a historian in this area if you want more info. Thanks for subscribing!!!
Hi ! I have the modern tone edge? ( not the vintage)... And I love it so much . The timbre reminds me the elite of the saxophonists ... The sound is very hot and tune ... here is the link : facebook.com/samuel.demoraes.5/videos/vb.1404452366/10216154753767289/?type=3
Gracias.
I just purchased a new Otto Link tenor vintage slant sig 5. I have been playing a Selmer c*80 which plays pretty much in tune up and down the scale pushed almost all in on my cork. I cant seem to find and spot with this new mouth piece where it isn't supper sharp. I can get the middle C fairly in tune with it as far out on the cork as possible and still staying on but most everything else is still super sharp. Is it he mouth piece, me or the Reference 54 I love that's the issue. I am a 60 yr old player of 4 yrs only.
That is an interesting situation. I've had the opposite effect only because the bore of the mouthpiece is so small I can't fit it properly on the neck without causing problems for my other mouthpieces. I'll assume you bought the Reference 54 at a music store so I would recommend that you bring both mouthpieces there and try other horns with a tuner just to see if you can isolate the problem. Also reeds have a huge effect. I use the #2 Blue Box Vandorens for my Selmer Soloist and 2.5-3 Red Box for this Otto Link. I hope that helps and thanks for tuning in to my channel
Superb review. What opening would you recommend for someone who is in a comfort zone across the horn with a Brilhart Ebolin 4 and a 2.25 Legere on tenor? I wanted to get another mouthpiece with the otto link style. I looked at the Theo Wanne Slant Sig 2 and found it WAY over my hobbyist budget. Like the sound on Otto link vintage here and the standard modern ones both. I have very good control with my Brilhart Ebolin 4 right now and am not keen on trying bigger tips. Do you recommend a 6 o 5 with that background? Most used ones on eBay are 7* and I am afraid I will find them very hard to blow. I find my Yamaha 5C a hard blow and difficult to control when compared to my Ebolin
Did you like a certain range of the horn more or less with this piece? I have a super dex metal 7 retro revival and its not easy to play so far. I think the steep facing and thin tip and side rails make it not very friendly to reeds. I came from playing a hard rubber meyer on alto so this RR piece on tenor is a big shift. I have a friend who is one of the best alto players in the world and he sAid he plays a meyer 5 because most people are not good enough to realize they cant control bigger tips like 7,8, etc. I do hear lots of lead alto players use a meyer 5. Why do you think on tenor no one uses 5 tip? Last question - do you think this new vintage link will work well with my tenor? I need something easy to play for a while. I was using the college’s yamaha 62 and 4c mouthpiece with a 3 rico and could play easily throughout the range of the horn. Even the palm keys were easy to play and sounded full and rich. I decided to get more serious about tenor becAuse I was sounding pretty good. I ordered a new selmer refernece 36 and found this metal 7 retro revival online as well. The sound is much better and expresive but the higher notes are harder to play and you need to be super careful about intonation. The higher notes sound worse overall. So if I have to hold out the high bfalt for 4 or 8 beats in a chart it sounds yuck. Any thoughts appreciated.
I would stick to the smaller facings on tenor if you are comfortable with the Yamaha 4c. That mouthpiece has a really small facing so I would suggest a 6 with the Otto Link hard rubber and a 6* with the metal. I prefer Vandoren Redbox 2.5 but I would recommend the Greenbox 2.5 with that setup. I did a review on the Rico Metalite mouthpieces as a super cheap way to figure it out also so you can check that out as a cheap way to get started before you spend big money.
@@Sirvalorsax Thanks brother! Just feel really frustrated because I did get to the point were I felt I have the alto under control. But this tenor thing has been hard at the higher end. Be well!
Is this a "new" mouthpiece based on vintage design or a "new to you" older model? Thanks for clarifying and for the great video(s), please keep them coming!
Hello and thanks for tuning in. I feel that this piece is much more mellow than the metal and I don't think they are versions of each other with different materials. I am very curious to try other "Slant Sig" style mouthpieces to see how they compare to each other.
For everything except the Selmer Soloist, I use the Red Box Vandoren #2.5. For the Soloist, I use Blue Box (traditional) #2. Thanks for tuning in to my channel.
Sirvalorsax Glad to hear you use thinner reeds, too. I never understood working up to thicker and thicker reeds. If it sounds good and you can hit everything the way you want why start all over with a thicker reed? Always seemed counter productive to me. Love the channel and thanks for all the videos.
I tried this piece- it had serious defects and was absolutely unplayable. I just do not understand how Otto Link can try to sell such garbage. How about some real quality control from their side?
WOW! I've heard some horror stories about these pieces. Mine is actually my favorite hard rubber mouthpiece in my collection but I do wish I got the 6 instead of the 5*. The defects that I have don't affect the playability though. I would suggest sending it back and getting a new one if you like the sound of it from various videos. Theo Wanne makes Slant Sig's that are modeled off of old Links and from my experience, The Wannes have SUPERB QUALITY management plus a 15 day return period so you can try them without such a high risk of getting burned.
I prefer Vandoren Red Box Java 2.5 But.... the 5* is a pretty close facing so maybe a stiffer reed is better for this piece. Reed choice can be a very personal thing depending on what your sound expectations are.
Could that hard rubber material be confused with a plastic mouthpiece? I bought a mouthpiece that was supposed to be hard rubber butts seems to be a plastic one.
I hope that my professionalism can provide my viewers with a perspective that allows them to see and hear what these products are capable of doing. For some, a bright sound is the only way and for others, dark is the only way. This piece can be had for a relatively low $170 new if this is your type of thing. Thanks for tuning in.
High reflection area might be literal heaven.
I love the sound, you can play any music with it, hits all corners.
Great review! The mouthpiece sounds beautiful. This mouthpiece has to my ears the Joe Henderson sound.
A real jazz mouthpiece.
Hi there!
I have a 7* hard rubber ottolink
And sound double of the ottolink metal stm 9!
I still wonder why...

Thanks! Yeah, will do. Good luck with the new neck. Great videos.
Can you possibly consider reviewing the modern tone edge? ( not the vintage) I would love to see if you feel any differences between the two!
I was thinking of getting one that is more open but I'm still on the fence with that one.

musiciansfriend.com El orificio de esta boquilla es muy pequeño y necesitaba comprar otro cuello para él.

I'd go with a 5 or 5* and then adjust my reed strength from there
What's the musical piece you play in all these mouthpiece review videos? It's really nice

Awesome sound bro i have a Otto link STM 7 metal is the tone Edge worth buy?
I like the hard rubber links but they are very dark and low/medium volume. That may be too much for some people.
otto links mouthpieces are great but the quality control sucks they don't make like they use to
Nice sound !
Is this a "new" mouthpiece based on vintage design or a "new to you" older model? Thanks for clarifying and for the great video(s), please keep them coming!
This and the metal are new but manufactured to vintage specs mouthpieces. Thanks for tuning in.
Cool, thanks for the info!
Great sound man!!!!!! Fat, full sound, tanks for review!
I recently got an Otto Link Tone Edge 6* for alto. Would you happen to know which strength and brand might work well with this mouthpiece?
I like Vandoren redbox 2.5, Boston Sax shop 3.0 and Rigotti Gold 2.0 or 2.5
Sounds good for an out of the box piece. How does it compare with the metal version?
Hello and thanks for tuning in. I feel that this piece is much more mellow than the metal and I don't think they are versions of each other with different materials. I am very curious to try other "Slant Sig" style mouthpieces to see how they compare to each other.
What mode were yu playing in? It was so beautiful
Dominant 7 #5. Thanks
Concert Eb7b13 ish thing
Which reeds do you like best? Have you used legere?

Yes. Thanks for tuning in!!
Sure thing, I really enjoy your playing and your altissimo videos helped me a lot
Thanks and thanks for tuning in!

@@Sirvalorsax vandoren V5 s27. Could you easily confuse these for plastic? This thing looks and feels like plastic but they're saying hard rubber.

re: Britain Antony I'm struggling to understand what that means? So anyone that isn't pro would sound bad? Imagine that!
