There’s a new 2-seater experimental aircraft design being built. It’s called the Avocet AV24 and I just found out about it.
The Avocet AV24 is the newest experimental airplane to soon hit the GA market. I got a chance to speak with the aircraft Designers Steve Situm and Ian Burnham. Both Gentlemen have over 4 decades in aircraft design and kit builds combined. They are claiming to have designed an aircraft that’s harder to stall and much easier to build; build to taxi within a month.
Here are the expected performance stats for the AV24
Engine: Lycoming IO 360
Speed: 230 - 250 mph
Capacity: 2 people
Useful load: 730 lbs
Baggage Capacity: 100 lbs
KIT Price: $68,000 (Includes 1 week build assist)

I actually spoke to Steve yesterday for over 40 minutes what a smart man with great personality and down to heart management process. Thanks Steve to being generous with your valuable time. I am hoping to be one of your first aircraft builder and flyer. Talk to you soon and hopefully I will see you at the factory/workshop soon.
I like that it’s fixed-gear. Maintenance and insurance will be substantially lower than if it were RG.
Seems like a pipe dream now, but because of dreamers we have some really good kits. My hats off to them and I wish them the best. Drive on!
This is an awesome video format! Nothing but the facts as presented by the people directly involved. Thank you MojoGrip!
You did really good on this one. Of all the composite birds out there this one really has my interest. Probably still out of my budget but much more realistic for the masses.
You had me at 0-360😊

Nice video Mike! Glad to see new experimental aircraft coming to the market!!!
Looks cool hopefully they sell a bunch of planes so I can buy a used one someday. Haha
Im planing to do the same thing🤣
Sounds like an excellent program.
If this were true, and available, I would be there tommorrow with my 70K in hand. unfortunately I suspect it's 5 years to market, and the price will have doubled!
i realize it's kinda off topic but do anyone know a good place to watch newly released series online?

Nice looking airplane Mike. I'll have to look in to these guy. 2 weeks to taxi is my idea of a build plan. I'll have to look these guys up. Hope your Sling project is going well. Bet your not getting much sleep with all the excitement to get it finished. I wish you my best. ~ your neighbor
I will have to keep my on that one.
Wow !!!.........Very beautiful airplane !!!!!
I hope you follow up with these guys when they get a bit further down the road. Interesting ideas here.
Nice looking plane
Hey Mike it was great getting to meet you at Osh! Great context great videos keep it up man!
All vaporware at this point (nothing built or flown) . Reduced parts count? Every designer has tried for that forever. Their website shows no stringers in fuselage. Bad idea. See giles G202 that had tail ripped off doing acro. This may not be aerobatic but at these speeds it can get same issues with any loss of control etc Lets follow and see how it does once flying and a few hundred built and flying. Good choice in the engine
I'm a fan of your content, but as a filmmaker I have got to tell you something: GET A WINDSCREEN FOR YOUR MICs!!!
Beautiful little airplane!
Too good to be true!
Very cool. These guys are speaking my language. A quick build and a reasonable price!
I think you guys will do well!
Very sound business plan with a built in commonsense approach. Xcellent Guys.
Looks pretty cool. Take my money if it comes to fruition!
These guys seem really genuine.
this plane reminds me of the team tango. that company prides itself on true QUICK build kits.
Yes, the Revolution RAI Tango 2. I don’t know why it isn’t more popular than what it is. I saw them at EAA last year & this year.
Looks promising.. what type of construction? I would love to see RV style flush solid rivets (426ad), not blind pull rivets, and a tailwheel option. With an advertised VNE of 250 knots, this could be a RV-7 killer! But needs a tailwheel option...
Wow, nice looking airplane. Can you put an Aeromomentum engine in it, if you can I want one!
Hi James,
Based on the CAD model, the Aeromomentum low-profile engines will fit within our cowling for the IO-360. After completing the first article, we will flight test multiple engines and publish the data so everyone will be able to see what the performance differences are.
Thank you for your interest in Avocet.
Steve
I would like to buy one of these aircrafts!
Posted two and a half years ago, but there doesn't appear to be any other news about this airplane since then. It's very interesting, but that's true of a lot of designs that never materialize. Too bad.
It is another experimental vapor ware. This video was in 2019 and the covid was in 2020 kept the business closed. But you think they have a prototype airplane instead of the CAD drawing. The performance number looks like the RV7 with higher aspect ratio wings. Glasair and Lancair both had similar programs but the composite kit construction is inherently labor intensive. Both are no longer in business because they priced themselves out of the experimental business. So the aluminum Vans RV7 is in the performance sweet spot and no other kit company has yet to create a plane that can match the "value" of the RV7 class of airplane.
Love the color scheme, Ian.
Hey Mojo
Any more literature for the av24 online that we can see? Or a pdf?
The guy at the end of the video gave you a website to go to.
Love the look of this, and at less than 70k, it's a real contender.
Excluding the engine..
@@neomatrix3612 Even still not bad. And put something like one of Aeromomentum's in it and it would still be under $100K.
@@TodayIFoundOut Oh ye, I agree, lovely little plane. Just the engine is a very big cost to consider. It's actually really cool that they put a Lycoming on and not a Rotax. I would love one of these planes. Saying that though, we never even saw a pic of a real one so does it even exist? :)
Nice Mike.....
I would like to see some thought given to electric motor with generator to power the motor instead of battery. Please do the calc and you will see this is a WIN WIN.
What are the chances of a taildragger version?
There have been a hundred guys that get to this stage. The real hard part is making it reality.
Great looking plane! Two seats too. Waiting for more info...
Looks similar to Van's RV-14, about 200 lbs (so, a bit) lighter than RV-14, with the same engine. BUT RV-14 available just now and many of it already built with great and helpful community around. Where is the point?
The RV-14 flies behind an (I)O-390 ordinarily.
This strikes me as a cross between a souped up RV-9A and a RV-7A.
Looks like a sport pilot could fly it now.
Good find! Best part, is that they are in Petaluma, California. Plan on meeting these guys this week 👍
Hi Mike, do you know if this project is dead? No info on their website. Thanks.
I'm thinking this plane will have a range of a thousand miles.
It also has to be cost effective. Most people simply can’t afford the high cost of an aircraft. Kit cars are no more complicated and they are still expensive. Avionics and powerplants are always going to be pricey, but if the airframe made up for that it would revolutionize the sport pilot world! Suddenly, people on tight budgets could realize their dreams. And if the basic aircraft was affordable it could be made so that it’s upgradable and the pilot could grow with experience and his aircraft could grow with him. If the instrument panel was modular in design a builder could set things up with basic instruments, then change out a panel down the road for a partial glass cockpit, then to a full glass cockpit and so on. If the radio panel was modular they could swap that panel to allow for better radios, then sell his original pane for a beginning pilot. The same thing for the instrument panels on either side of the cockpit. The more modular the design, the more improvements can be made and the builder can pick and choose the upgrades they want or don’t want.
What's the sale price for complete kit?
Oh yeah, make it in a tail wheel!
The AV24 will also be available in a tail dragger version 😊
@@avocetaircraft4416Great
Indonesia also can doing project plane
call us when you start production , delivery and first upgrade. MaDe in UsA , for planes... is not so secure for some time...Dream shit , max shit...
Just one question, how much?
Ok wow the price was lower than i thought.
how much is this aircraft in american or canadian currency? where do i buy it? i am from ontario canada...?
Новоиспечённый, с пылу с жару!
Nice, I hope this is successful.
Nice plane
Is this price without engine?
Here's the URL to the website: avocetaircraft.com/
Isn't a lycoming IO360 a 60k$ engine? for 200 horses.
Flying is safer than driving
70k is only for the airframe, or engine and avionics are included?
The only set price at this time is for the airframe kit under the launch program: avocetaircraft.com/launch-program/
Will this plane have an optional brs parachute system?
A parachute system will be available.
Your not changing your mind are you Mojo?? The aircraft looks amazing but the didn’t speak about performance and range.. I still like the Rotax low cost fuel burn. I think you made the right choice!!
Oh no. I'm sticking with the Sling TSi.
Excellent choice!! Bravo! Love it!! That’s why we follow you!
every new "designer" ever ---> we gonna build it super fast, super cheap, stronger, lighter, blah blah blah... then, it never happens. Mostly because those "designers" are quacks. The odd one with real Aeronautical Engineering education never venture to make such stupid promises in the first place (because they know better).
Are you aware that these guys are aeronautical engineers ... or are you just spouting ?
@@berniemccann8935 You think they are? I doubt it... or they would have mentioned their experience in this field. Since there was no mention of other successful projects that they were part of, it is safe to assume they are either highly unqualified, or, they have very little experience.
@@MrZrryan2 Don't be so lazy. avocetaircraft.com/about/
Situm's "Aeronatical" background is in radio control sailplanes and composite molding tech.. He has as much an aeronautical designer / engineer background as the German dude in the movie Flight of the Phoenix.
Fortunately, they have a couple of really experienced P.Eng's on retainer... there is a dude from Lancer (not Nubauer, the other guy), and someone else... so, MAYBE this will become a reality. Which is good, because the main designer (CEO) is primarily a project engineer that works on fine-tuning the characteristics of existing aircraft.
How do you even find this stuff?
Lol they find me 😄
@@mojogrip Do they pay you to post content? I would consider charging or atleast setting up a commission based affiliate link. You've prolly sold or influenced in millions of dollars of plane sales, only fair you get a small slice.
@@mojogrip -- Before charging for the Website, could you do something with the page tabs.
i am from ontario canada. can i fly this with an advanced ultra light pilot license? where do i buy this fully built airplane or airplane kit from?
In Canada, at the time of this reply, advanced ultra-light aircraft
have a maximum take-off weight of 1232 lbs. The AV24 isn't designed for this category. Regarding the second question, the AV24 is currently sold only as a kit. The purchaser of the kit completes at least 51% of the building under the FAA "Major Portion Rule," which is usually referred to as the "51% rule."
@@avocetaircraft4416 hurry up and start selling it already!!! Lol Some of us are looking for something other than Vans with the same as or better performance!
No updates???
$68K? That's why I'm bulding a Sonerai II LTS. About $17K
VW powered and super simple vfr instruments. Having been a part in 2 Sonerai 2L ... it can totally be done at that price.
I don’t know what Agent J is basing his comments on...maybe he’s thinking of a glass panel or certified engine costs. Now, if you pay someone to finish weld the fuselage and do the covering, that’ll add of course. Do it all yourself, yup can be done.
@Agent J have you ever built an experimental? Not an ultralight, but a proper FAA certified experimental.
No more dangerous than a Cub.
Sonerai actually has its own race class at Reno
@Agent J define safe? This Multi CFII is curious
I'll trust a welded 4130 fuselage over just about any spam can. But I like those too. I just wouldn't pull any G in them.
@Agent J I don't think you really understand experimental aircraft at all.
Performance, speed, utility, efficiency are nearly always greater in experimental.
70 grand and you still have to build it. With transport cost from the facility. This is more like a 100k plane. Still ok value if you don't count your own labor cost.
They need to make financing a plane more like financing a car.
I’m new to aviation. What different about financing a plane? I know insurance is a major factor.
@@1compaqedr8 They will not use the plane as an asset to secure the loan.
homertalk yikes so you need something else of equal value as collateral like a home? Planes can be hundreds of thousands of dollars.
@@1compaqedr8 Yes, usually, plus they won't deal with loans under 50k
I agree. Aviation should be more available.
Looks like an RV
Or a pulsar
IO-360, so 6-9 GPH = $40-50 to operate?
How to design n aircraft? I believe you won't respond but still giving a shot.
How legit is this company? Not much content on them.
@Agent J are you saying insurance companies are currently working with them?
@Agent J more so interested in the early bird discount and concerned about the initial 19k advance payment
Need true 4 seat 160 knot plane with 900 mile range.
Onde e Fabricado ?. Valor....

what is float? (ca. 01:47)
Float describes a landing where the aircraft flies near the surface for a long time before touching down. Several articles and videos covering the subject can be found by searching "wing ground effect boldmethod." The video entitled "Ground Effect: Boldmethod Live" does an excellent job of covering the subject.
Emmanuel Benjamin Mercado Rodriguez ...in landing phase the aircraft is flared just above the runway and enters ground effect; it floats along using up too much runway without touching down.
Max speed (cruise?)at 230... Economy at "???' Fuel burn for both please...
Why would you design a new aircraft with such an old and frankly obsolete engine? No one wants high fuel bills. No one wants to be using lead filled avgas. Surely you either go with a turbo diesel option like Diamond do, or you go petrol like Rotax. If I want a loud fuel drinking beast for under $70,000 I could instead pick up a yak-52 and get the full aerobatic experience with it. I just don't see what the USP of this aircraft is. A done to death planform with an archaic powerplant. ???
If I'm going to build a kit aircraft, its because I can't get anything like it. I don't care that it might take me 2000 hours to build a long ez 61 ... the ramp appeal, uniqueness, its a special aircraft. This is so ordinary they should have offered a beige option.
Finally, at 2 weeks build all you are doing is shoving the 51% liability on me. If you weren't scared of being sued, you'd just sell me the completed aircraft for the same money. No one who wants the pride of building their own aircraft thinks about a 2 week project.
Honda v6 turbo and you got a deal!
Who is it? Viking? Out of FL sells Honda turbo 4s out of Civics... should be awesome other than the Honda 4 is tall & narrow vs the Lycoming flat 4 is low and wide...
Is it just me? I didn’t get if this is an LSA.
Clearly not- Lycoming IO-360, 1825 lb Gross, 230mph.
Technically, it's an E-AB. Allows for constant speed prop, more HP and IFR capability if you want. As well, it's beefier. Manufacture says most of the plane is carbon fiber and the wings are fiberglass (want a little flex). It has no rivets and is rated to take 9G's!
@@scottstolnitz8918 i saw +6 and -3Gs...
@@rosebarnes9625 Spoke with the designer yesterday. That's what he "said"....
@@scottstolnitz8918 I don't know what would be more trustworthy, what the designer said or what they put on their website, maybe the changed the design and have not updated the website yet, but I got the +6/-3 from avocetaircraft.com/
I'm excited to get some real numbers of cruise speed and fuel burn at cruise!!
why are you building a plane that takes thousands of hours?
That is the million dollar question 😄

Looks Cool, Looks Great, But this is a joke video.
Wrong aircraft at this time.
Design an aircraft around a Rotax 915/916iS with the Titan IO-340 as an option.
Make a taildragger version available.
2 seats side-by-side.
80-100 pounds of baggage.
Max gross weight 1700-1800 pounds.
Ensure it's MOSAIC compliant.
You've got a winner.
The only kit manufacturer with an aircraft like that available is Rans with the S-21.
It's selling like hot cakes.
Blah blah show us the plane lol
Another one you can’t put any fold up bikes in, why do all these two seat planes have useless cargo space.
I guess that after their stated extensive research within the industry, it became obvious that few people with 2-seater sport planes, needed to carry bicycles.
Give us a call about the make, model, and frame size of the folding bike(s) you would like to transport. (707) 230-6647
Personally I buu an airplane for how it flies, not so I can complain about biking. .you wanna bike, store it in your garage and go biking.
