You do such great work. I've hired a lot of "carpenters" in my day. I can honestly say your work is better than many who call themselves a carpenter. Great videos.
I gutted the first floor bathroom 6 years ago and replaced the tub with a solid surface shower pan. I ordered a (2) crankout casement windows just about the same as you installed. I had created recessed spaces for storage of shampoo, etc and was tiled with accent pieces and prior to installing the cement backboard I Red Guarded the entire back wall. The bathroom space was rewired for power vent as well as additional accent lights. I bought all the material and ceramic tile for the shower and 38" high the rest of the room. I hired a tradesman to install the tiles and marble floor as I had tiled and floored the upstair bathroom 15 years prior. It was a wise move as the tiler was their a full week making intricate cuts to do a super finished job. I did hire a pro to install the frameless 1/2" glass shower doors but I plumbed the vanity, toilet, and shower pan drain as well as install the Symmons shower and valve and faucet fixtures. Well now I am going to redo the upstairs in spring which as going to be a duplicate of the downstairs with colors being different. I already have the window ordered from 6 years ago as well as Symmons shower valve and faucet and back board stored in the basement floor because of a 10% off Lowes coupon I used then. Long story short after watching your impressive video I am going to resize that space with the smaller window myself. I will look with interest for the rest of your bathroom completion on your web site.
As you probably already discovered in the video or comments below, if one does not care to save the old frame (most cases) it's way easier to remove if you just run a circular saw across all four sides of the window. The little pieces are much easier to remove than the whole frame all at once or a full side at a time. Then just grind off what's left of the nails. Or even better, order the new window as a "retrofit" wish is double the price but will fit your old window frame exactly. Then there is no evidence the window was ever changed on the outside but it depends on what you want to spend on materials and if making new cuts on the outside is easy to hide. You obviously made the right choice under the circumstances. Thanks for the videos Melissa !
Great job! Working off ladders isn’t fun. I avoid it as much as possible. I feel your pain on the two person thing too. I prefer to work alone and hate it when I’m halfway through and realize I should’ve gotten a helper two steps ago 😂. Keep up the great work!
I'm inspired! Every contractor/handyman (9 total) that I've called talk at me like I'm a dummy. I'm not. I'm just old and tired of fixing my house. I ordered windows of the same width, just 5 inches shorter. I refuse to pay someone $800 to remove, resize, and install one window! I could have had replacement winows installed for less than the cost of their labor. That didn't even include drywall or the siding (I have the siding). I may make an attempt in the spring....but I know there is rotted wood at the sill...alas, just a little extra work. :) Thank you for the awesome video! Great detail and right on point. Girls rock🎉
I am a lifelong Minnesota resident. I really want a lake house soon, currently saving. Watching videos to get pumped up. I came across your video. I love how you do things on your own. I wasn't looking for that type of video, but it was a blessing because I will probably be doing the same someday when I find my lake house. Thank you for all the hard work you put into your videos!!! I've learned so much already ❤ going to watch more
Great video. I’m about to tackle this project myself. I will put a window in like yours on top and in the shower, add a cutout/nook for shampoo. So I’m using the same space the larger window was in. Wish me luck (I’ll need it). 😂
I love that you always ‘do the research’ to empower yourself to tackle complicated jobs . You may not be a ‘professional’ but you have so much experience that you could be. Great job on a scary ladder job!
This was super inspirational! I’ve been wanting to shorten a window in our breakfast nook so I can build some banquet seating in front. Makes me confident I can do it!
what a great job on that window you cannot tell where you filled in and have to admit was a little nervous with you up on that ladder thanks for sharing
The outside looks incredible, like it's original to the house. What I've learned most from your videos is that I ever have work that needs done, I should ask you for a bid! hahaha
Good job, both on the construction and the video. I know that work pants with tool pockets and tool belts are marketed towards men and may feel silly, but it's honestly so much easier to manage tools when working on ladders ❤
Awesome job! This gives me the motivation to finally replace the one window I've been putting off. Also, the audio quality sounds amazing with the wireless lapel mic.
Hey look, I really enjoy your video. And I'm not trying to pick on you in any way, shape, nor form! But I kept wondering why you didn't move your ladder out from the wall of your house a little bit more? And lean the ladder up against the wall right underneath the window? I've done that several times. And it seems to work pretty well! Anyhow thanks for another great video as usual! Keep up the great work!
I am thinking of doing this on my own (with the assistance of one friend of course . . . since I need someone like you did with your husband). I find that contractors like to up-sale you when they are looking for work and it is soooo annoying. In addition, I am not always happy with contractors' work lately.
Not criticizing…Should’ve put house wrap over sill into house before installing window, then zip tape. With the outside trim so flush with the siding I would’ve put some flashing up top. Thats a big project, good job!! I know contractors that you put to shame.
GREAT JOB! That was amazing. And looks completely professional. You did inspire me to try something intimidating. Thank you! I was so afraid you were going to accidentally slip with the hammer and break your new window 😬 which, with my luck, would happen to me. But you are too skilled for that to happen😅
If you're going to be using flashing tape in the future you might get yourself a j-roller to roll down the flashing tape. The adhesive has to have some pressure on it to be effective. Btw, 14:00 the bottom flange is usually left un-flashed (so any moisture, water, on the sill, as little as it is, is able to drip out & down instead of being trapped). The bottom flange still rests on flashing tape you applied to the sill specifically the section of flashing tape that makes a 90° turn onto the outside wall and house wrap. Window manufacturers specify running a bead of silicone on the side and top flanges. You can silicone the bottom flange too, but with just spots of silicone, not a continuous bead. Last but not least, Awesome!
Great job Melissa as usual 👍🏼👍🏼 btw, I long ago switched to foam gun, it's a far superior way of applying foam etc, helped with control and much more economical in the long run 🙏🏼 19:01
Wow. You made me sit to the edge of my seat. I thought: she isn't going up that ladder, and at the same time carrying that window up is she? Yes she is!! I was terrified you would fall down. You are a daredevil. In the 1920's you had Buster Keaton. Who did all the stunts himself, and lived to tell. Great job Melissa, but please don't do these kind of jobs with just a ladder again😉 Love the channel...
Love the channel. Please do not leave tools on the top of any ladder. If the drill had come off and hit you in the head it could have been a tragedy. I hope you make many many more videos! (safely)
just a suggestion, but you might want to be a little more careful with ladder work. Your ladder base looks very far from the house wall, which sometimes there is no choice for - but then you have to use anchor lines, plus something to seriously hold down the base. If the ladder goes down, and you fall 7' or 10' you can get very seriously injured, which is not fun. Also, whenever possible, when working at the top of a ladder, hold on to the ladder with one hand and work with the other hand - again, not always possible but very often it is, if you try.
Great job!! The only small recommendation I have is to ALWAYS wear cheap latex gloves when using the spray insulating foam in a can. That stuff is nasty! As you said, you don't want to get it on your hands. If you do, nothing will remove it! Not soap, WD40, thinner, nothing will work! You just have to wait DAYS until it wears off your hands naturally. Been there, done that! :-(
I do not excuse the respirator face. Not allowed. 😠 Just kidding. Looks like a little chip of the cedar siding came off when you took out the exterior window casing. Anyway, I just spent the whole day painting my kitchen and back mud room. It's helpful to see I'm not the only one working right now. But here's how I have you beat - I just listen to books on Audible. No having to stop and talk to my camera, readjust it, etc. To be fair, home improvement isn't a hustle for me - yet! Anyway, time for a shower. No windows, though.
I’ve said this before” this old house “ needs to hire this beauty! She knows what she’s doing and it could save that long running PBS show ! 😎👍
I was on pins and needles the whole time! I'm just glad that you're alive.
Your enthusiasm and personality makes your videos so entertaining!!
Talented woman, the finished product always looks great. Thanks for sharing.
You do such great work. I've hired a lot of "carpenters" in my day. I can honestly say your work is better than many who call themselves a carpenter. Great videos.
Thank you, that’s very kind!
I had to subscribe you are badass !!! Am petrified of heights and seeing u up doing your thing is admirable!!!!❤

I was distracted from sweating everytime you were at the top of the ladder🤯

I am happy for your new house and your litle windows sow good 👍

I'd pay the 800 all day long.
It wasn't just good , it was a GREAT JOB. DIY Princess.

I considered doing that, but where I live you cannot put a recessed niche in an exterior wall. The wall needs more insulation for the cold months.
I love that you always ‘do the research’ to empower yourself to tackle complicated jobs . You may not be a ‘professional’ but you have so much experience that you could be. Great job on a scary ladder job!
Absolutely awesome! Loved this style of video . . . having you talk live on camera while you're working. Super cool!
I don’t blame you for the mishaps. I do the same thing. Such a pleasure watching you work. Fantastic content!
This was super inspirational! I’ve been wanting to shorten a window in our breakfast nook so I can build some banquet seating in front. Makes me confident I can do it!
Oooh I wish next you could show adding exterior windows where there aren't any. I have a dark house! ❤
The angle of that ladder is scaring me
OUTSTANDING. Great job! You knocked it out of the park girl.
what a great job on that window you cannot tell where you filled in and have to admit was a little nervous with you up on that ladder thanks for sharing
You go girl you did one window flawlessly.....you can do so much more! I commend you, you are so young and look what you can achieve.
Perfect time for an extra hand on the inside.. great job!
Wow, I have to comment you on a job well done. Congratulations! Good work!
The outside looks incredible, like it's original to the house. What I've learned most from your videos is that I ever have work that needs done, I should ask you for a bid! hahaha
Very nice job there Melissa! You constantly amaze me at the work you take on, and accomplish. Well done !
Good job, both on the construction and the video.
I know that work pants with tool pockets and tool belts are marketed towards men and may feel silly, but it's honestly so much easier to manage tools when working on ladders ❤
I would’ve been terrified being up on that ladder!
That windows looks awesome!
Great work! A tool belt will help you.
You are awesome! Great work, and your smile at the end was charming! Keep the content coming.
You are super woman. I am so thankful you did this video because I'm about to the same thing when I start renovation on my house❤
You are remarkable. Not that you can, because of course you can but because you aren’t afraid. 👍
Kudos. I'm beyond happy you weren't hurt
What a great job again 👍. Nothing stops you 💪😎🐕🦺
Great install! But I worry about you on that tall ladder.
SIMP 👆
That’s fantastic! You’re so brave.
Awesome job! This gives me the motivation to finally replace the one window I've been putting off. Also, the audio quality sounds amazing with the wireless lapel mic.
Great job and a cozy video you make. Love that!
Looks superb Mel!!
Amazing work!!
Be proud of all your efforts and works!!
Superstar!!!
I'm impressed with the results! Looks great!
Definitely inspired me to renovate my bathroom! Thank you 🙏🏻

Nicely done! Looks great.
Great job! It looks good.
You are an inspiration. 💪🏻💪🏻 As always, thank you for the excellent content.

Beautiful tutorial
Replacing a window is a pane sometimes.😂
Baha!
I like how you framed that.
I saw right through this pun
You guys nailed it.
You rock!!! Definitely have inspired me!

“This face is going to give me wrinkles”😂😂 that made me laugh out loud!
Very good job Melissa, you are very talented and fanny Yong women. God Bless You and your Family. ❤🎉

Love the channel...
Your amazing!! Great work 😊
Impressive. But why are you offsetting your ladder? Versus placing it directly in line with window? Leaning (laterally) from a ladder seems unsafe.
You are very good! Can't open the window? Why?
Looks great. Thanks for sharing.
❤
Have you ever used Schluter?
Great job!
Well done 👏
So pretty
Caulk rhymes with talk. The “L” is silent.
Love the channel. Please do not leave tools on the top of any ladder. If the drill had come off and hit you in the head it could have been a tragedy. I hope you make many many more videos! (safely)
Great video ... well done!!
Being up on a ladder like that scares the heck out of me. Great job…and work! There is NO job to big for you to tackle.
Great job😊
Looks great, use a carpenters belt as that drill dropping on your head would hurt!
Awesome job!!!!
Since you can’t open the window, how is the bathroom going to be ventilated? You do an awesome job.
I had a bath fan added that vents through the roof

Next time screw a 2x4 temporarily below the window to hold the window like a ledge so you can position yourself to get it in place.

Replacing men’s jobs , one Melissa at a time 😂🥰
Melissa you have an interesting accent on 'caulk'
Great job! Love your passion, Come help me do mine. Next time it might be worth to rent a scaffold,
smokin!
